Discussion on the Suitability of SCADA-Based Condition Monitoring for Wind Turbine Fault Diagnosis through Temperature Data Analysis
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: artificial neural networks, condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, SCADA, wind energy, wind turbines
Wind turbines are expected to provide on the order of 50% of the electricity worldwide in the near future, and it is therefore fundamental to reduce the costs associated with this form of energy conversion, which regard maintenance as the first item of expenditure. SCADA-based condition monitoring for anomaly detection is commonly presented as a convenient solution for fault diagnosis on turbine components. However, its suitability is generally proven by empirical analyses which are limited in time and based on a circumscribed number of turbines. To cope with this lack of validation, this paper performs a controlled experiment to evaluate the suitability of SCADA-based condition monitoring for fault diagnosis in a fleet of eight turbines monitored for over 11 years. For the controlled experiment, a weakly supervised method was used to model the normal behavior of the turbine component. Such a model is instantiated as a convolutional neural network. The method, instantiated as a thresho... [more]

Development of Robust and Physically Interpretable Soft Sensor for Industrial Distillation Column Using Transfer Learning with Small Datasets
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: artificial neural network, distillation column, small datasets, soft sensor, transfer learning
In the development of soft sensors for industrial processes, the availability of data for data-driven modeling is usually limited, which led to overfitting and lack of interpretability when conventional deep learning models were used. In this study, the proposed soft sensor development methodology combining first-principle simulations and transfer learning was used to address these problems. Source-domain models were obtained using a large amount of data generated by dynamic simulations. They were then fine-tuned by a limited amount of real plant data to improve their prediction accuracies on the target domain and guaranteed the models with correct domain knowledge. An industrial C4 separation column operating at a refining unit was used as an example to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach. Results showed that fine-tuned networks could obtain better accuracy and improved interpretability compared to a simple feedforward network with or without regularization, especially when... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural networks, membrane computing, spiking neural membrane computing models, spiking neural P systems, Turing universality
As third-generation neural network models, spiking neural P systems (SNP) have distributed parallel computing capabilities with good performance. In recent years, artificial neural networks have received widespread attention due to their powerful information processing capabilities, which is an effective combination of a class of biological neural networks and mathematical models. However, SNP systems have some shortcomings in numerical calculations. In order to improve the incompletion of current SNP systems in dealing with certain real data technology in this paper, we use neural network structure and data processing methods for reference. Combining them with membrane computing, spiking neural membrane computing models (SNMC models) are proposed. In SNMC models, the state of each neuron is a real number, and the neuron contains the input unit and the threshold unit. Additionally, there is a new style of rules for neurons with time delay. The way of consuming spikes is controlled by a... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: alcohol, ANN, ether, functional group, soot
The self-learning capabilities of artificial neural networks (ANNs) from large datasets have led to their deployment in the prediction of various physical and chemical phenomena. In the present work, an ANN model was developed to predict the yield sooting index (YSI) of oxygenated fuels using the functional group approach. A total of 265 pure compounds comprising six chemical classes, namely paraffins (n and iso), olefins, naphthenes, aromatics, alcohols, and ethers, were dis-assembled into eight constituent functional groups, namely paraffinic CH3 groups, paraffinic CH2 groups, paraffinic CH groups, olefinic −CH=CH2 groups, naphthenic CH-CH2 groups, aromatic C-CH groups, alcoholic OH groups, and ether O groups. These functional groups, in addition to molecular weight and branching index, were used as inputs to develop the ANN model. A neural network with two hidden layers was used to train the model using the Levenberg−Marquardt (ML) training algorithm. The developed model was tested... [more]

Application of a MOGA Algorithm and ANN in the Optimization of Apple Drying and Rehydration Processes
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
The aim of the study was to estimate the optimal parameters of apple drying and the rehydration temperature of the obtained dried apple. Conducting both processes under such conditions is aimed at restoring the rehydrated apple to the raw material properties. The obtained drying parameters allow the drying process to be carried out in a short drying time (DT) and at low energy consumption (EC). The effect of air velocity (vd), drying temperature (Td), characteristic dimension (CD), and rehydration temperature (Tr) on rehydrated apple quality was studied. Quality parameters of the rehydrated apple as: color change (CC), mass gain ratio (MG), solid loss ratio (SL), volume gain ratio (VG) together with DT and EC were taken into consideration. The artificial neural network was used for modeling of rehydrated apple quality parameters, DT, and EC. A multi-objective genetic algorithm was developed in order to optimize parameters of the drying and rehydration processes. The simultaneous minimi... [more]

Static Voltage Stability Assessment Using a Random UnderSampling Bagging BP Method
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural network, bagging, class imbalance problem, Machine Learning, random under-sampling, static voltage stability
The increase in demand and generator reaching reactive power limits may operate the power system in stressed conditions leading to voltage instability. Thus, the voltage stability assessment is essential for estimating the loadability margin of the power system. The grid operators urgently need a voltage stability assessment (VSA) method with high accuracy, fast response speed, and good scalability. The static VSA problem is defined as a regression problem. Moreover, an artificial neural network is constructed for online assessment of the regression problem. Firstly, the training sample set is obtained through scene simulation, power flow calculation, and local voltage stability index calculation; then, the class imbalance problem of the training samples is solved by the random under-sampling bagging (RUSBagging) method. Then, the mapping relationship between each feature and voltage stability is obtained by an artificial neural network. Finally, taking the modified IEEE39 node system... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: ANN, condition monitoring, deep learning, finite element method, gear pump
Sensor acquired signal has been a fundamental measure in rotary machinery condition monitoring (CM) to enhance system reliability and stability. Inappropriate sensor mounting can lead to loss of fault-related information and generate false alarms in industrial systems. To ensure reliable system operation, in this paper we investigate a system’s multiple degrees-of-freedom (DOF) using the finite element method (FEM) to find the optimum sensor mounting position. An appropriate sensor position is obtained by the highest degree of deformation in FEM modal analysis. The effectiveness of the proper sensor mounting position was compared with two other sensor mounting points, which were selected arbitrarily. To validate the effectiveness of this method we considered a gear-actuator test bench, where the sensors were mounted in the same place as the FEM simulation. Vibration data were acquired through these sensors for different health states of the system and failure patterns were recognized u... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: ammonia removal and recovery, artificial neural network, response surface methodology
Waste streams with high ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) concentrations are very commonly produced due to human intervention and often end up in waterbodies with effluent discharge. The removal of NH3-N from wastewater is therefore of utmost importance to alleviate water quality issues including eutrophication and fouling. In the present study, vacuum thermal stripping of NH3-N from high strength synthetic wastewater was conducted using a rotary evaporator and the process was optimized and modeled using response surface methodology (RSM) and RSM−artificial neural network (ANN) approaches. RSM was first employed to evaluate the process performance using three independent variables, namely pH, temperature (°C) and stripping time (min), and the optimal conditions for NH3-N removal (response) were determined. Later, the obtained data from the designed experiments of RSM were used to train the ANN for predicting the responses. NH3-N removal was found to be 97.84 ± 1.86% under the optimal conditions... A Hybrid Modeling Framework for Membrane Separation Processes: Application to Lithium-Ion Recovery from Batteries
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural network, hybrid modeling, lithium recovery, membrane separation
This study proposed a hybrid modeling framework for membrane separation processes where lithium from batteries is recovered. This is a pertinent problem nowadays as lithium batteries are popularized in hybrid and electric vehicles. The hybrid model is based on an artificial intelligence (AI) structure to model the mass transfer resistance of several experimental separations found in the literature. It is also based on a phenomenological model to represent the transient system regime. An optimization framework was designed to perform the AI model training and simultaneously solve the Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) system representing the phenomenological model. The results demonstrate that the hybrid model can better represent the experimental validation sets than the phenomenological model alone. This strategy opens doors for further investigations of this system.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: artificial neural network, drill-in fluid, Marsh funnel, mud rheology, plastic viscosity, yield point
Calcium chloride brine-based drill-in fluid is commonly used within the reservoir section, as it is specially formulated to maximize drilling experience, and to protect the reservoir from being damaged. Monitoring the drilling fluid rheology including plastic viscosity, P V , apparent viscosity, A V , yield point, Y p , flow behavior index, n , and flow consistency index, k , has great importance in evaluating hole cleaning and optimizing drilling hydraulics. Therefore, it is very crucial for the mud rheology to be checked periodically during drilling, in order to control its persistent change. Such properties are often measured in the field twice a day, and in practice, this takes a long time (2−3 h for taking measurements and cleaning the instruments). However, mud weight, M W , and Marsh funnel viscosity, M F , are periodically measured every 15−20 min. The objective of this study is to develop new models using artificial neu... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: ACO-DWT, artificial neural network, HVDC fault detection, optimization method
Unlike the more prevalent alternating current transmission systems, the high voltage direct current (HVDC) electric power transmission system transmits electric power using direct current. In order to investigate the precise remedy for fault detection of HVDC, this research proposes a method for the HVDC fault diagnostic methodologies with their limits and feature selection-based probabilistic generative model. The main contribution of this study is using the wavelet transform based on ant colony optimization and ANN to detect the different types of faults in HVDC transmission lines. In the proposed method, ANN uses optimum features obtained from the voltage, current, and their derivative signals. These features cannot be accurate to use in ANN because they cannot give reliable accuracy results. For this reason, first, the wavelet transform applies to the fault and non-fault signals to remove the noise. Then the ACO reduces unimportant features from the feature vector. Finally, the opt... Spent grains from microbreweries are mostly formed by malting barley (or malt) and are suitable for a further valorization process. Transforming spent grains from waste to raw materials, for instance, in the production of nontraditional flour, requires a previous drying process. A natural convection solar dryer (NCSD) was evaluated as an alternative to a conventional electric convective dryer (CECD) for the dehydration process of local microbrewers’ spent grains. Two types of brewer’s spent grains (BSG; Golden ale and Red ale) were dried with both systems, and sustainability indices, specific energy consumption (eC), and CO2 emissions were calculated and used to assess the environmental advantages and disadvantages of the NCSD. Then, suitable models (empirical, neural networks, and computational fluid dynamics) were used to simulate both types of drying processes under different conditions.
