April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: alternative financing of public services, budgetary constraints, energy sector, energy transition, public-private partnership, students, survey
The global economy has been hit by crises in recent decades and the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to great uncertainty in the possibility of a lasting recovery and an energy transition that will enable sustainable green growth. Budgetary constraints impede the regular delivery of public services, especially in developing countries. Energy efficiency and sustainable economic growth in Croatia can be improved with public-partnership models providing public services. However, this concept is often considered as not appropriate due to many misconceptions in public opinion. We analysed a survey of almost 1500 Croatian students with the aim of verifying the importance of formal education in the recognition of realistic aspects of PPP among the population, which represents important social capital. In comparison to other students, students who have been taught about public-private partnership models at university are more likely to recognise certain misconceptions about public-private par... Jianying Liang, Yankun Li, Wenya Jia, Weikang Lin, Tiancai Ma
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy management strategy, fuzzy control, multi-objective optimization, Pontryagin’s minimum principle, proton exchange membrane fuel cell
For commercial applications, the durability and economy of the fuel cell hybrid system have become obstacles to be overcome, which are not only affected by the performance of core materials and components, but also closely related to the energy management strategy (EMS). This paper takes the 7.9 t fuel cell logistics vehicle as the research object, and designed the EMS from two levels of qualitative and quantitative analysis, which are the composite fuzzy control strategy optimized by genetic algorithm and Pontryagin’s minimum principle (PMP) optimized by objective function, respectively. The cost function was constructed and used as the optimization objective to prolong the life of the power system as much as possible on the premise of ensuring the fuel economy. The results indicate that the optimized PMP showed a comprehensive optimal performance, the hydrogen consumption was 3.481 kg/100 km, and the cost was 13.042 $/h. The major contribution lies in that this paper presents a metho... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: belt conveyor, diagnostics, mechanical failure, preventative maintenance, thermal imaging, underground mining
The paper discusses the results of a study carried out to determine the thermal condition of a conveyor power unit using a thermal imaging camera. The tests covered conveyors in the main haulage system carrying coal from a longwall. The measurements were taken with a thermal imaging diagnostic method which measures infrared radiation emitted by an object. This technology provides a means of assessing the imminence and severity of a possible failure or damage. The method is a non-contact measuring technique and offers great advantages in an underground mine. The thermograms were analysed by comparing the temperature distribution. An analysis of the operating time of the conveyors was also carried out and the causes of the thermal condition were determined. The main purpose of the research was to detect changes in thermal state during the operation of a belt conveyor that could indicate failure and permit early maintenance and eliminate the chance of a fire. The article also discusses th... [more]
Stress Reversals near Hydraulically Fractured Wells Explained with Linear Superposition Method (LSM)
Ruud Weijermars, Jihoon Wang
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fracture cage, geothermal reservoir, hydraulic fracture, oil and gas reservoir, pressure depletion, stress cage, stress reversal, stress trajectories
Prior studies have noted that the principal stress orientations near the hydraulic fractures of well systems used for energy extraction may wander over time. Typically, the minimum and maximum principal stresses—in the horizontal map view—swap their respective initial directions, due to (1) fracture treatment interventions, and (2) pressure depletion resulting from production. The present analysis shows with stress trajectory visualizations, using a recently developed linear superposition method (LSM), that at least two generations of stress reversals around hydraulic fractures occur. The first generation occurs during the fracture treatment; the second occurs immediately after the onset of so-called flow-back. During each of these stress swaps in the vicinity of the hydraulic fractures, reservoir directions that were previously in compression subsequently exhibit extension, and directions previously stretching subsequently exhibit shortening. The pressure change in the hydraulic fract... [more]
Elevator Regenerative Energy Applications with Ultracapacitor and Battery Energy Storage Systems in Complex Buildings

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage, cost analysis, elevator, hybrid energy storage system, nearly zero energy building, peak shaving, regenerative energy, ultracapacitor
Due to the dramatic growth of the global population, building multi-story buildings has become a necessity, which strongly requires the installation of an elevator regardless of the type of building being built. This study focuses on households, which are the second-largest electricity consumers after the transportation sector. In residential buildings, elevators impose huge electricity costs because they are used by many consumers. The novelty of this paper is implementing a Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS), including an ultracapacitor Energy Storage (UCES) and a Battery Energy Storage (BES) system, in order to reduce the amount of power and energy consumed by elevators in residential buildings. The control strategy of this study includes two main parts. In the first stage, an indirect field-oriented control strategy is implemented to provide new features and flexibility to the system and take benefit of the regenerative energy received from the elevator’s motor. In the second stag... [more]
Deterministic vs. Random Modulated Interference on G3 Power Line Communication
Waseem El Sayed, Piotr Lezynski, Robert Smolenski, Amr Madi, Marcin Pazera, Adam Kempski
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electromagnetic interference (EMI), power line communication (PLC), random modulation
Power line communication (PLC), which is often used in advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), may be disturbed by adjacent high-power converters. Due to the inherent features of this type of communication, classic methods of improving communication reliability (filtration and circuit separation) cannot be fully applied. Information coding (modulation) methods are used in PLC to increase the data transfer rate and improve noise immunity. Random modulations (RanM) are used in converters to lower emission levels. Therefore, we investigate how the converters’ modulation parameters and coding methods may affect PLC communication reliability in the paper. To this end, we employ an experimental approach. In particular, the analysis of the influence of deterministic modulation (DetM) and (RanM) on the performance of narrowband G3-PLC is shown. We emulated an actual situation where EMI generated by the DC/DC converter disturbed the PLC transmission. The experimental results show the transmissi... [more]
Wind Turbine Tower Deformation Measurement Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning on a 3.4 MW Wind Turbine
Paula Helming, Axel von Freyberg, Michael Sorg, Andreas Fischer
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: structural health monitoring, terrestrial laser scanning, tower deformation measurement, wind turbine towers
Wind turbine plants have grown in size in recent years, making an efficient structural health monitoring of all of their structures ever more important. Wind turbine towers deform elastically under the loads applied to them by wind and inertial forces acting on the rotating rotor blades. In order to properly analyze these deformations, an earthbound system is desirable that can measure the tower’s movement in two directions from a large measurement working distance of over 150 m and a single location. To achieve this, a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) in line-scanning mode with horizontal alignment was applied to measure the tower cross-section and to determine its axial (in the line-of-sight) and lateral (transverse to the line-of-sight) position with the help of a least-squares fit. As a result, the proposed measurement approach allowed for analyzing the tower’s deformation. The method was validated on a 3.4 MW wind turbine with a hub height of 128 m by comparing the measurement resu... [more]
Effect of Liquid Hot Water Pretreatment on Hydrolysates Composition and Methane Yield of Rice Processing Residue
Lisbet Mailin López González, Monika Heiermann
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, hydrothermal pretreatment, lignocellulose, liquid hot water pretreatment, silica
Lignocellulosic rice processing residue was pretreated in liquid hot water (LHW) at three different temperatures (140, 160, and 180 °C) and two pretreatment times (10 and 20 min) in order to assess its effects on hydrolysates composition, matrix structural changes and methane yield. The concentrations of acetic acid, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and furfural increased with pretreatment severity (log Ro). The maximum methane yield (276 L kg−1 VS) was achieved under pretreatment conditions of 180 °C for 20 min, with a 63% increase compared to untreated biomass. Structural changes resulted in a slight removal of silica on the upper portion of rice husks, visible predominantly at maximum severity. However, the outer epidermis was kept well organized. The results indicate, at severities 2.48 ≤ log Ro ≤ 3.66, a significant potential for the use of LHW to improve methane production from rice processing residue.
Automatic Overcurrent Protection Coordination after Distribution Network Reconfiguration Based on Peer-To-Peer Communication
Alex Valenzuela, Silvio Simani, Esteban Inga
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution network reconfiguration, Optimization, peer-to-peer communication, protection coordination, resilience
Electrical power systems represent a fundamental part of society, and their efficient operations are of vital importance for social and economic development. Power systems have been designed to withstand interruptions under already provided safety and quality principles; however, there are some extreme and not so frequent events that could represent inconveniences for the correct operation of the entire system. For this reason, in recent years the term resilience, which serves to describe the capacity of a system to recover from an unwanted event, has been analyzed on planning, operation and remedial actions. This work is focused on the implementation of a topological reconfiguration tool, which is oriented to change the structure of primary feeders based on changing the status of switchgears. Once the distribution network has been reconfigured, an algorithm of protection coordination is executed based on communication peer-to-peer between Matlab and PowerFactory, which develops an ada... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CMOS integrated circuits, inductive power converter, integrated switching power converters, switched-capacitor (SC) DC–DC converters
This paper reviews and discusses the state of the art of integrated switched-capacitor and integrated inductive power converters and provides a perspective on progress towards the realization of efficient and fully integrated DC−DC power conversion. A comparative assessment has been presented to review the salient features in the utilization of transistor technology between the switched-capacitor and switched inductor converter-based approaches. First, applications that drive the need for integrated switching power converters are introduced, and further implementation issues to be addressed also are discussed. Second, different control and modulation strategies applied to integrated switched-capacitor (voltage conversion ratio control, duty cycle control, switching frequency modulation, Ron modulation, and series low drop out) and inductive converters (pulse width modulation and pulse frequency modulation) are then discussed. Finally, a complete set of integrated power converters are r... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: borehole heat exchangers, geoenergetics, geothermal boreholes, geothermal energy, geothermal waters, geothermal wells
Geothermal energy can be useful after extraction from geothermal wells, borehole heat exchangers and/or natural sources. Types of geothermal boreholes are geothermal wells (for geothermal water production and injection) and borehole heat exchangers (for heat exchange with the ground without mass transfer). The purpose of geothermal production wells is to harvest the geothermal water present in the aquifer. They often involve a pumping chamber. Geothermal injection wells are used for injecting back the produced geothermal water into the aquifer, having harvested the energy contained within. The paper presents the parameters of geothermal boreholes in Poland (geothermal wells and borehole heat exchangers). The definitions of geothermal boreholes, geothermal wells and borehole heat exchangers were ordered. The dates of construction, depth, purposes, spatial orientation, materials used in the construction of geothermal boreholes for casing pipes, method of water production and type of clos... [more]
Importance of the Long-Term Seasonal Component in Day-Ahead Electricity Price Forecasting Revisited: Parameter-Rich Models Estimated via the LASSO
Arkadiusz Jędrzejewski, Grzegorz Marcjasz, Rafał Weron
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: day-ahead market, electricity price forecasting, forecast averaging, LASSO, long-term seasonal component, variance stabilizing transformation
Recent studies suggest that decomposing a series of electricity spot prices into a trend-seasonal and a stochastic component, modeling them independently, and then combining their forecasts can yield more accurate predictions than an approach in which the same parsimonious regression or neural network-based model is calibrated to the prices themselves. Here, we show that significant accuracy gains can also be achieved in the case of parameter-rich models estimated via the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO). Moreover, we provide insights as to the order of applying seasonal decomposition and variance stabilizing transformations before model calibration, and propose two well-performing forecast averaging schemes that are based on different approaches for modeling the long-term seasonal component.

Natalia Walczak, Zbigniew Walczak, Jakub Nieć
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: head losses, hydropower, plant debris, SHP, trash racks
Deposition of debris on the screens of hydroelectric power plants translates into measurable economic losses. Occurring plant debris, although it is an organic material, is characterised by different forms and structure. It is often leaves, branches, and grasses in lowland areas, while in mountainous regions, broken boughs and trees can be expected. On the trash racks of power plants, debris may be deposited in different forms, shapes, and places. This work aims to determine the impact of the degree of submergence of debris on the values of the force acting on the racks. This paper analyzes the influence of the rectangular shape of the debris deposited on the trash racks and its degree of submergence and weight on the obtained values of the force acting on the racks as a result of water pressure, which directly affects the hydraulic losses and productivity of hydroelectric power plants. Our research confirms the negative influence of the deposited plant debris on the value of forces re... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: air pollution, CO2 equivalent, fire hazard, fluidized bed, toxic greenhouse gases, toxicity
This paper presents the energy characteristics of wood and wood-based materials in the form of commercially available pellets, furniture board (MDF) and OSB. Toxicometric indices were determined for gaseous destructs arising from thermal decomposition and combustion of the materials studied. The paper proves that combustion conditions are crucial in terms of toxic destructive emissions. It has been shown that the combustion of wood-based materials under controlled conditions can lead to equally low emissions of toxic wastes as the combustion of traditional wood materials. The paper also presents the index of greenhouse gas emission, the so-called CO2 equivalent, for the examined wood and wood-based materials.
Valve Plate Structural Optimal Design and Flow Field Analysis for the Aviation Bidirectional Three-Port Piston Pump
Xiangyang Li, Yiting Xi, Dunhui Xiao, Jiaxin Tao
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bidirectional, CFD numerical simulation, three-port piston pump, valve plate design
This paper designed and optimized a bidirectional three-port valve plate structure for solving the matching problem of flow rate and pressure in the aerospace pump-controlled differential hydraulic cylinder. This design aims to make the valve plate work well under the bidirectional high-speed condition. The model was set up using dynamic mesh and sliding mesh, and the simulation is conducted by FLUENT. In addition, the flow field of inlet and outlet flow rate pulsations, pressure pulsation in cylinder, and non-dead-point transition zone of four cases are analyzed to optimize the valve plate in this work. The numerical results show that different angles of non-dead-point transition zones of the valve plate have a big impact on the performance of the piston pump. For example, the flow rate pulsation reaches the minimum when the angle of non-dead point transition zone is greater than or equal to the angle of a cylinder port. However, at this time, the closed compression would occur and th... [more]

Keywords: ensemble learning, meso-ensemble prediction system, solar irradiance forecast, support vector regression
From the perspective of stable operation of the power transmission system, the transmission system operators (TSO) needs to procure reserve adjustment power at the stage of the previous day based on solar power forecast information from global horizontal irradiance (GHI). Because the reserve adjustment power is determined based on information on major outliers in past forecasts, reducing the maximum forecast error in addition to improving the average forecast accuracy is extremely important from the perspective of grid operation. In the past, researchers have proposed various methods combining the numerical weather prediction (NWP) and machine learning techniques for the one day-ahead solar power forecasting, but the accuracy of NWP has been a bottleneck issue. In recent years, the development of the ensemble prediction system (EPS) forecasts based on probabilistic approaches has been promoted to improve the accuracy of NWP, and in Japan, EPS forecasts in the mesoscale domain, called m... Impedance Modeling and Stability Analysis of DFIG-Based Wind Energy Conversion System Considering Frequency Coupling
Shaojian Song, Peichen Guan, Bin Liu, Yimin Lu, Huihwang Goh
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DFIG, frequency coupling, harmonic stability, impedance modeling, sub-synchronous oscillation
Impedance-based stability analysis is an effective method for addressing a new type of SSO accidents that have occurred in recent years, especially those caused by the control interaction between a DFIG and the power grid. However, the existing impedance modeling of DFIGs is mostly focused on a single converter, such as the GSC or RSC, and the influence between the RSC and GSC, as well as the frequency coupling effect inside the converter are usually overlooked, reducing the accuracy of DFIG stability analysis. Hence, the entire impedance is proposed in this paper for the DFIG-based WECS, taking coupling factors into account (e.g., DC bus voltage dynamics, asymmetric current regulation in the dq frame, and PLL). Numerical calculations and HIL simulations on RT-Lab were used to validate the proposed model. The results indicate that the entire impedance model with frequency coupling is more accurate, and it is capable of accurately predicting the system’s possible resonance points.
Real Fault Location in a Distribution Network Using Smart Feeder Meter Data
Hamid Mirshekali, Rahman Dashti, Karsten Handrup, Hamid Reza Shaker
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution network, fault location, grounded faults, impedance-based method, section estimation, smart feeder meter
Distribution networks transmit electrical energy from an upstream network to customers. Undesirable circumstances such as faults in the distribution networks can cause hazardous conditions, equipment failure, and power outages. Therefore, to avoid financial loss, to maintain customer satisfaction, and network reliability, it is vital to restore the network as fast as possible. In this paper, a new fault location (FL) algorithm that uses the recorded data of smart meters (SMs) and smart feeder meters (SFMs) to locate the actual point of fault, is introduced. The method does not require high-resolution measurements, which is among the main advantages of the method. An impedance-based technique is utilized to detect all possible FL candidates in the distribution network. After the fault occurrence, the protection relay sends a signal to all SFMs, to collect the recorded active power of all connected lines after the fault. The higher value of active power represents the real faulty section... [more]
Multi-State Reliability Assessment Model of Base-Load Cyber-Physical Energy Systems (CPES) during Flexible Operation Considering the Aging of Cyber Components

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aging, Control Rod System (CRS), Cyber-Physical System (CPS), load-following, multi-state model, Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), Renewable Energy Source (RES)
Cyber-Physical Energy Systems (CPESs) are energy systems which rely on cyber components for energy production, transmission and distribution control, and other functions. With the penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), CPESs are required to provide flexible operation (e.g., load-following, frequency regulation) to respond to any sudden imbalance of the power grid, due to the variability in power generation by RESs. This raises concerns on the reliability of CPESs traditionally used as base-load facilities, such as Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs), which were not designed for flexible operation, and more so, since traditionally only hardware components aging and stochastic failures have been considered for the reliability assessment, whereas the contribution of the degradation and aging of the cyber components of CPSs has been neglected. In this paper, we propose a multi-state model that integrates the hardware components stochastic failures with the aging of cyber components, and q... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: fault location, parameters estimation, transmission lines, voltage-current measurements, whale optimization algorithm
Real-time estimation of transmission line (TL) parameters is essential for proper management of transmission and distribution networks. These parameters can be used to detect incipient faults within the line and hence avoid any potential consequences. While some attempts can be found in the literature to estimate TL parameters, the presented techniques are either complex or impractical. Moreover, none of the presented techniques published in the literature so far can be implemented in real time. This paper presents a cost-effective technique to estimate TL parameters in real time. The proposed technique employs easily accessible voltage and current data measured at both ends of the line. For simplicity, only one quarter of the measured data is sampled and utilized in a developed objective function that is solved using the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) to estimate the TL parameters. The proposed objective function comprises the sum of square errors of the measured data and the corr... [more]
A Study on Wear and Friction of Passenger Vehicles Control Arm Ball Joints
Marek Wozniak, Krzysztof Siczek, Gustavo Ozuna, Przemyslaw Kubiak
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ball joint, finite element method, roughness, STM microscope, suspension, vehicle
The following paper describes research on vehicle suspension elements: the ball joints. The worn surface roughness of selected ball pins and their bearings was compared in terms of vehicle mileage, utilization period, and car model. Ball pin roughness was measured using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), whereas for the bearing surface, a profilometer was used. The aim of this study was to determine the resistive torque in an unloaded ball joint. Using the finite element method, models of the unloaded ball joint were analyzed in two scenarios: with and without interference between the worn ball and its bearing. Calculated values of resistive torques in the ball joint were compared, and recommendations were given relative to the mileage and the time after which it was necessary to perform verification or replacement of the ball joints.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: binder-free, composite electrodes, CuCo2O4@NiCo2O4, metallic oxides, supercapacitors
Metallic oxides are considered promising candidates for supercapacitors owing to their inherent pseudocapacitive behavior and superior electrochemical properties. In this work, NiCo2O4, CuCo2O4, and CuCo2O4@NiCo2O4 composite electrodes are synthesized directly on a nickel foam substrate via the facile hydrothermal method. The phase of the prepared materials was analyzed using the X-ray diffraction method. The morphology of the prepared binder-free electrodes was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical testing was done in a 2 M KOH solution against an Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The CuCo2O4@NiCo2O4 composite electrode demonstrated a value of specific capacitance as high as 422 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1 and thus outperformed the NiCo2O4 and CuCo2O4 in terms of its electrochemical performance. The CuCo2O4@NiCo2O4 composite retained a specific capacitance of 278 F g−1 even with the increase of current density to 10 A g−1, which corresponds to a 34% loss o... [more]
A CUSUM-Based Approach for Condition Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis of Wind Turbines
Phong B. Dao
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condition monitoring, CUSUM test, Fault Detection, multiple linear regression, SCADA data, structural change, wind turbine
This paper presents a cumulative sum (CUSUM)-based approach for condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of wind turbines (WTs) using SCADA data. The main ideas are to first form a multiple linear regression model using data collected in normal operation state, then monitor the stability of regression coefficients of the model on new observations, and detect a structural change in the form of coefficient instability using CUSUM tests. The method is applied for on-line condition monitoring of a WT using temperature-related SCADA data. A sequence of CUSUM test statistics is used as a damage-sensitive feature in a control chart scheme. If the sequence crosses either upper or lower critical line after some recursive regression iterations, then it indicates the occurrence of a fault in the WT. The method is validated using two case studies with known faults. The results show that the method can effectively monitor the WT and reliably detect abnormal problems.
