Static Behaviors and Applications of Buckling Monitoring Members with Rigid Ends
Wudang Ying, Changgen Deng, Chenhui Zhang
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: behavior improvement, buckling monitoring member, contact state, finite element analysis, global buckling, local buckling, test analysis
The buckling of compression members may lead to the progressive collapse of spatial structures. Based on the sleeved compression member, the buckling monitoring member is introduced to control the buckling of compression member and raise buckling alert by sensing contact between the core tube and the restraining tube. Considering the rigid connection among the members in spatial structures, the buckling monitoring member with rigid ends needs to be further analyzed. An experimental test was conducted and finite element analyses were performed with calibrated finite element models. The results indicated that the ultimate bearing capacity and post-ultimate bearing capacity of the core tube were enhanced due to the restraint from the restraining tube. The contact was successfully sensed by pressure sensor, revealing that it sensed the buckling of the core tube. Parametric studies were conducted, indicating that the core protrusion, core slenderness ratio, the gap between the core tube and... [more]

Keywords: actuator saturation constraint, fuzzy control, interval type-2 T-S fuzzy model, multiplicative noises
In many practical systems, stochastic behaviors usually occur and need to be considered in the controller design. To ensure the system performance under the effect of stochastic behaviors, the controller may become bigger even beyond the capacity of practical applications. Therefore, the actuator saturation problem also must be considered in the controller design. The type-2 Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model can describe the parameter uncertainties more completely than the type-1 T-S fuzzy model for a class of nonlinear systems. A fuzzy controller design method is proposed in this paper based on the Interval Type-2 (IT2) T-S fuzzy model for stochastic nonlinear systems subject to actuator saturation. The stability analysis and some corresponding sufficient conditions for the IT2 T-S fuzzy model are developed using Lyapunov theory. Via transferring the stability and control problem into Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) problem, the proposed fuzzy control problem can be solved by the convex... [more]

Keywords: nonlinear flow, positive displacement pump, pump control system, servo motor
In an electro-hydraulic servo system, the system flow is used as an intermediate variable to control the output displacement/force/speed of the actuator, and it plays the role of a medium for energy transmission and conversion. Therefore, the control of the system flow is the essence of state control for the system actuator. The purpose of this paper is to study the non-linear characteristics of pump control system flow and pave the way for high-performance control of the system. Based on the flow partition idea, the system output flow is divided into the dead zone, load zone, and saturation zone. We establish a mathematical model of the hydraulic system to analyze and study the effect of the nonlinear characteristics of the servo motor and the positive displacement pump on the system flow partition characteristics. We focus on the effects of the positive displacement pump shear flow internal leakage, pressure difference flow internal leakage, oil compression, servo motor rotation fric... [more]

Keywords: aging, Dendranthema zawadskii var. lucidum, inflammation, senescence
Senescence is the phenomenon by which physiological functions of organisms degenerate with time. Cellular senescence is marked by an inhibition of cell cycle progression. Beta-galactosidase accumulates in the lysosomes of aged cells. In this study, human dermal fibroblast cells (HDFs) were treated with 0.5 μM doxorubicin for 4 h to induce cellular senescence. Senescence-associated beta-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) activity was then measured 72 h after treatment with aerial parts of Dendranthema zawadskii var. lucidum (Nakai) J.H. Park (DZ) extract. Treatment with DZ extract significantly decreased SA-β-gal activity in a dose-dependent manner in HDFs. Additionally, DZ extract treatment reduced age-related oxidative stress and inflammation in the aortas of aged rats. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in aortas of aged control rats were higher than those in young rats. However, DZ extract-fed aged rats showed significantly lower ROS levels than the aged control rats. When the aged rats... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: input constraint, passivity constraint, pole placement, robust control, Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model, variance constraint
In this paper, a robust fuzzy controller for stochastic nonlinear systems subject to multiple performance constraints is discussed. To solve the problem of stochastic behaviors in nonlinear systems, the covariance control theory and passive control theory are applied based on the concept of energy. Additionally, the pole placement method is considered for the better transient behaviors of the system responses. However, it is known that the control inputs and maximum overshoot of the system responses may become bigger at the same time when the settling time or converge rate of the system is required to be faster. Due to this reason, the input constraint is also considered in the fuzzy controller design method to limit the value of the control gain. Moreover, an effective robust control method is applied to deal with the perturbation of the nonlinear systems. Based on the above performance constraints, the sufficient conditions can be obtained to achieve the stability in the sense of mea... [more]

The most used pharmaceutical formulations for children are syrups, suppositories, soft chewable capsules, and mini-tablets. Administrating them might create an administration discomfort. This study aimed to develop and evaluate orodispersible films (ODFs) for pediatric patients in which the fluoxetine (FX) is formulated in the polymeric matrix. Six FX fast dissolving films (10 mg FX/ODF), FX1, FX2, FX3, FX4, FX5, and FX6, were prepared by solvent casting technique. In the composition of the ODFs, the concentration of the hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and the concentration of the propylene glycol were varied. Each formulation of fluoxetine ODF was evaluated by determining the tensile strength, folding endurance, disintegration, behavior in the controlled humidity and temperature conditions, and adhesiveness. All the obtained results were compared with the results obtained for six ODFs prepared without FX. The disintegration time of the FX ODFs was of maximum 88 s for FX2. Via the in vit... [more]

Keywords: Fe–Rh, first-order magnetic phase transition, heat treatment, thermal hysteresis
We report the results of studies of the magnetic and transport properties of Fe49Rh51 alloy prepared by different sequences of quenching and the annealing process. The temperature dependences of the relative initial magnetic permeability and resistivity are analyzed. An optimal regime consisting of annealing at 1300 K for 440 min and quenching from 1300 K to 275 K is found to observe the desired narrow antiferromagnetic−ferromagnetic transition in Fe49Rh51 alloy under cyclic conditions. This has the potential to increase the efficiency of cooling devices based on the magnetocaloric effect of magnetic materials with a first-order field-induced phase transition.

Keywords: knowledge-informed, medium voltage insulator, quality control, quasi-gradient estimations, simplex search method
Quality control is of great significance for the economical manufacturing and reliable application of medium voltage insulators. With the increasingly stringent quality control requirement, traditional quality control methods in this field face a growing challenge on their efficiency. Therefore, this study aims to achieve quality specifications by optimizing process conditions with the least costs. Thus, a knowledge-informed simplex search method was proposed based on an idea of knowledge-informed optimization to enhance the optimization efficiency. Firstly, a new mathematical quantity, quasi-gradient estimation, was generated following a reconstruction of the simplex search from the essence and the development history of the method. Based on this quantity, the gradient-free method possessed the same gradient property and unified form as the gradient-based methods. Secondly, an implementation of the knowledge-informed simplex search method based on historical quasi-gradient estimations... [more]

Keywords: biomass calorific and heating values, digestate, energy maize, sugar beet pulp digestion, yield
This study aimed to determine the suitability of sugar beet pulp digestion by-products as soil amendments for maize grown for energy purposes. In a plot experiment, nitrogen fertilizer at a standard rate of 200 kg N ha−1 was applied as a control vs. treatment with solid and liquid digestate fractions. Digestate was obtained from a gasifier processing only sugar beet pulp. Following harvest, heating and calorific values were determined together with the yield and chemical composition of the maize cob and stover. It was found that soil amendment with crude (unseparated) digestate or its two fractions (separated into liquid and solid) produced higher yields of maize cobs and stover compared with the application of standard fertilizer. An analysis of the energy value of the maize plant revealed differences between the studied soil treatments. Cobs obtained from plots treated with the digestate showed higher calorific and heating values than those obtained from control plots; however, maize... [more]

Keywords: automated mechanical transmission, countershaft brake, parameter estimation, recursive least squares method, synchronous shifting control
A countershaft brake is used as a transmission brake (TB) to realize synchronous shifting by reducing the automated mechanical transmission (AMT) input shaft’s speed rapidly. This process is performed to reduce shifting time and improve shifting quality for heavy-duty vehicles equipped with AMT without synchronizer. To improve controlled synchronous shifting, the AMT input shaft’s equivalent resistance torque and the TB’s characteristic parameters are studied. An AMT dynamic model under neutral gear position is analyzed during the synchronous control interval. A dynamic model of the countershaft brake is discussed, and its control flow is given. The parameter identification method of the AMT input shaft’s equivalent resistance torque is given on the basis of the least squares algorithm. The parameter identification of the TB’s characteristic parameters is proposed on the basis of the recursive least squares method (RLSM). Experimental results show that the recursive estimations of the... [more]

Keywords: fault diagnosis, fault propagation, industrial application, information extraction, time delayed mutual information
Causal relations among variables may change significantly due to different control strategies and fault types. Off line-based knowledge is not adequate for fault diagnosis, and existing causal models obtained from data driven methods are mostly based on historical data only. However, variable correlation would not remain identical, and could be very different under certain industrial operation conditions. To deal with this problem, a fault diagnosis framework is proposed based on information solely extracted from process data. By this method, mutual information (MI) between each pair of variables is first calculated to obtain thresholds using historical data, as variable correlation under normal conditions is mostly contributed by random noises, which is often neglected in existing causal analysis models. Once a process deviation is detected, each pair of variables with mutual information beyond these thresholds are further investigated by time delayed mutual information (TDMI) analysi... [more]

Keywords: agro-industrial wastes, cheese whey, cow manure, dark fermentation, ensiled sweet sorghum, organic load effect, pH effect, pretreatment effect
The aim of this study was to determine the optimal conditions for dark fermentation using agro-industrial liquid wastewaters mixed with sweet sorghum stalks (i.e., 55% sorghum, 40% cheese whey, and 5% liquid cow manure). Batch experiments were performed to investigate the effect of controlled pH (5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5) on the production of bio-hydrogen and volatile fatty acids. According to the obtained results, the maximum hydrogen yield of 0.52 mol H2/mol eq. glucose was measured at pH 5.5 accompanied by the highest volatile fatty acids production, whereas similar hydrogen productivity was also observed at pH 6.0 and 6.5. The use of heat-treated anaerobic sludge as inoculum had a positive impact on bio-hydrogen production, exhibiting an increased yield of 1.09 mol H2/mol eq. glucose. On the other hand, the pretreated (ensiled) sorghum, instead of a fresh one, led to a lower hydrogen production, while the organic load decrease did not affect the process performance. In all experiments, t... [more]

Keywords: atom transfer radical coupling, atom transfer radical polymerization, polyacrylates, polystyrenes
Atom transfer radical coupling (ATRC), performed with or without radical traps, has allowed for high extents of coupling (Xc) for a variety of brominated polymers, yet structurally different polymeric chain ends require unique reagents and reaction conditions. Inspired by a similar study that focused on universal conditions for the controlled polymerization of different monomers using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), this work focuses on developing a single set of conditions (or conditions with as little variation as possible) that will achieve extents of coupling greater than 80% or end-brominated chains of polystyrene (PSBr), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMABr), and poly(methyl acrylate) (PMABr). The radical traps α-phenyl-tert-butylnitrone (PBN), 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane (MNP), and nitrosobenzene (NBz) were chosen in this study, along with copper catalysts, reducing agents, and nitrogen-based ligands. Ultimately, a single set of effective reaction conditions was identifi... [more]

Keywords: AVR, controller, Energy, fuzzy, generator, real-time recurrent learning
The automatic voltage regulator is an important component in energy generation systems; therefore, the tuning of this system is a fundamental aspect for the suitable energy conversion. This article shows the optimization of a fuzzy automatic voltage controller for a generation system using real-time recurrent learning, which is a technique conventionally used for the training of recurrent neural networks. The controller used consists of a compact fuzzy system based on Boolean relations, designed having equivalences with PI, PD, PID, and second order controllers. For algorithm implementation, the training equations are deduced considering the structure of the second order compact fuzzy controller. The results show that a closed-loop fuzzy control strategy was successfully implemented using real-time recurrent learning. In order to implement the controllers optimization, different weighting values for error and control action are used. The results show the behavior of the configurations... [more]

Keywords: 1D-CNN, 1D-DCGAN, bearing, fault diagnosis, hydraulic pump, small sample size
The field of mechanical fault diagnosis has entered the era of “big data”. However, existing diagnostic algorithms, relying on artificial feature extraction and expert knowledge are of poor extraction ability and lack self-adaptability in the mass data. In the fault diagnosis of rotating machinery, due to the accidental occurrence of equipment faults, the proportion of fault samples is small, the samples are imbalanced, and available data are scarce, which leads to the low accuracy rate of the intelligent diagnosis model trained to identify the equipment state. To solve the above problems, an end-to-end diagnosis model is first proposed, which is an intelligent fault diagnosis method based on one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN). That is to say, the original vibration signal is directly input into the model for identification. After that, through combining the convolutional neural network with the generative adversarial networks, a data expansion method based on the on... [more]

Keywords: blade profile, contra-rotating fan, load control, overall performance
In recent years, few studies focused on adjusting the load distribution of contra-rotating fan (CRF) blades. To improve the overall performance of CRFs, we used a design code to build 32 sets of CRFs to determine the effects of three factors—the front and rear rotor load matching, the load distribution of each rotor and the axial distance between the rotors—on the total pressure rise and efficiency of CRFs using numerical calculations. The relationship between the CRF blades load and velocity components was theoretically analyzed using blade element analysis and the forward problem method. According to the performance curve, it can be concluded that the rear rotor (RR) is the key factor that determines the performance of CRFs. Through analyzing Mach number contours from different perspectives, the relationship between velocity and adjustment load was verified. Furthermore, the flow field characteristics for three specific CRFs were explored at the stall points, design points and choke... [more]

New types of cylindrical handles such as pushrims with force signal sensors under four fingers (excluding the thumb) enable real-time gripping-status assessment. The mirrored change phenomenon of the index and ring fingers observed in linear grip tasks offers a new perspective on finger grouping. To evaluate the force contribution of index-ring finger pair in multi-finger force, 10 right-handed male participants with similar hand sizes were recruited to participate in sinusoidal function force-following tasks involving a cylindrical handle. The real-time signal of the grip force and individual finger force were recorded to analyze real-time changes in the finger force contribution (FC). Subsequently, the time-FC curves of individual and paired fingers were analyzed. Results show are as follows: (1) When the FC of the index-ring finger pair exceeded that of the middle-little finger pair, the gripping load was relatively low, and a smaller difference between the FCs of the index-ring fin... Keywords: composite control, constant flow control, double closed-loop, dynamic and static characteristics, magnetic liquid double suspension bearing
As a new type of suspension bearing, the magnetic liquid double suspension bearing (MLDSB) is mainly supported by electromagnetic suspension and supplemented by hydrostatic support. At present, the MLDSB adopts the regulation strategy of “electromagnetic-position feedback closed-loop, hydrostatic constant-flow supply” (referred to as CFC mode). In the equilibrium position, the external load is carried by the electromagnetic system, and the hydrostatic system produces no supporting force. Thus, the carrying capacity and supporting stiffness of the MLDSB can be reduced. To solve this problem, the double closed-loop control strategy of “electromagnetic system-force feedback inner loop and hydrostatic-position feedback outer loop” (referred to as DCL mode) was proposed to improve the bearing performance and operation stability of the MLDSB. First, the mathematical models of CFC mode and DCL mode of the single DOF supporting system were established. Second, the real-time variation laws of r... [more]

Keywords: algebraic geometry, enterprise-wide optimisation, explicit MPC, multi-parametric programming, set-point tracking
In this article, we introduce a novel framework for the design of multi set-point nonlinear explicit controllers for process systems engineering problems where the set-points are treated as uncertain parameters simultaneously with the initial state of the dynamical system at each sampling instance. To this end, an algorithm for a special class of multi-parametric nonlinear programming problems with uncertain parameters on the right-hand side of the constraints and the cost coefficients of the objective function is presented. The algorithm is based on computed algebra methods for symbolic manipulation that enable an analytical solution of the optimality conditions of the underlying multi-parametric nonlinear program. A notable property of the presented algorithm is the computation of exact, in general nonconvex, critical regions that results in potentially great computational savings through a reduction in the number of convex approximate critical regions.

Keywords: alkalinity, anaerobic digestion, control, multivariable, robustness, uncertainties, wastewater treatment
A multivariable adaptive feedback control for highly uncertain continuous anaerobic digestion processes is proposed to regulate the volatile fatty acids (VFA) concentration, the strong ions concentrations, and the total and intermediate alkalinities. The multivariable control scheme includes a Luenberger observer to estimate both the unmeasured variables (i.e., VFA) and unknown microbial growth kinetics. The control approach is designed using an exponential Lyapunov function to resemble the typical exponential biological growth of the involved microbial consortia. Taking into account physicochemical equilibrium, alkalinities are represented as a function of the state variables. As a result, the control problem becomes a regulation problem on alkalinities, and in turn, a tracking control problem on the state variables, with two manipulated variables—the dilution rate and the feed rate of a strong alkali solution—while the state variables’ set-points are given as a function of pH. The im... [more]

Keywords: challenging dynamics, predictive control, stability properties, tuning
Predictive functional control (PFC) is a fast and effective controller that is widely used in preference to PID for single-input single-output processes. Nevertheless, the core advantages of simplicity and low cost come alongside weaknesses in tuning efficacy. This paper summarises and consolidates the work of the past decade, which has focused on proposing more effective tuning approaches while retaining the core attributes of simplicity and low cost. The paper finishes with conclusions on the more effective approaches and links to context.
