The Effects of Pore Geometry on Late Time Solute Transport with the Presence of Recirculation Zone
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: non-fickian, porous media, recirculation zone, solute transport, transport tailing
The solute transport process in porous media is central to understanding many geophysical processes and determines the success of engineered applications. However, fundamental understanding of solute transport in heterogeneous porous media remains challenging especially when inertial effects are significant. To address this challenge, we employed direct numerical simulations in a variety of intrapore geometries at a high Reynolds number (Re = 10) flow regime, where recirculation zones (RZs) are present with significant inertial effects. We find that the volume of RZs depends on pore geometries. Moreover, RZs serve as an immobile domain that can trap and release solutes that lead to non-Fickian transport, characterized by the early arrival and heavy tailing of breakthrough curves and bimodal residence time distributions (RTDs). Lastly, the late time portion of RTDs is fitted to the power law function with determined exponent n, where n depends on the pore geometries and consequently the... [more]

Surface Drilling Parameters and Drilling Optimization Techniques: Are They Useful Tools in Gas Hydrate Detection?
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: hydrates, MSE, surface drilling parameters, torque
This paper examines the application of surface drilling parameters and drilling optimization techniques, such as mechanical specific energy (MSE) and equivalent strength (EST), in detecting hydrate gas-bearing sediments during drilling operations. Gas hydrates are usually detected from 3D seismic imaging and later confirmed with Measurement-While-Drilling (MWD)/Logging-While-Drilling (LWD) data and collected core samples. Here, we describe an analysis of the time-based surface drilling parameters recorded from two wells drilled during the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 372A offshore of New Zealand and the Indian National Gas Hydrate Program Expedition 02 (NGHP-02) offshore of India. The investigation revealed that drilling parameters, as well as MSE/EST methods, can and should be used to monitor and optimize the drilling process and to detect lithological/tectonic (fractures, fault zones, rock hardness, etc.) changes in the drilled substrata and signs of the dy... Joint Scheduling Optimization of a Short-Term Hydrothermal Power System Based on an Elite Collaborative Search Algorithm
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: cascade reservoirs, collaborative search algorithm, elite reinforcement learning, elite-assisted learning, joint scheduling of hydrothermal power, parameter random
The joint scheduling optimization of hydrothermal power is one of the most important optimization problems in the power system, which is a non-linear, multi-dimensional, non-convex complex optimization problem, and its difficulty in solving is increasing with the expansion of the grid-connected scale of hydropower systems in recent years. In this paper, three effective improvement strategies are proposed given the shortcomings of the standard collaborative search algorithm, which easily falls into local optimization and weakening of global search ability in later stages. Based on this, an elite collaborative search algorithm (ECSA) coupled with three improvement strategies is established. On this basis, taking the classic joint scheduling problem of a hydrothermal power system as an example, the optimization model with the goal of the least pollutant gas emission is constructed, and the system constraint treatment method is proposed. In addition, five algorithms, i.e., ECSA, CSA, PSO,... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: compressed air energy storage systems, differential evolution, district heating and cooling, off-design performance
In this work, the optimal design of a hybrid energy complex, including wind turbines, an internal combustion engine, and an adiabatic compressed air energy storage system is investigated. A novel bi-level optimization strategy is proposed for optimizing the capacity and operational power of each component of the system based on techno-economic considerations. The article presents information and discussions about the impacts of the partial-load operation of the energy storage system components on the optimal rated power and working strategies. The off-design characteristics are proven to have a huge negative impact on the efficiency and economy of the hybrid system. The efficiency reduction of the compressed air energy storage system is about 21% in summer and 8.9% in winter, when the system is operating in partial-load conditions. The operation cost of the system is reduced significantly when carrying out the proposed bi-level optimization strategy.

The Concept of Using an Expert System and Multi-Valued Logic Trees to Assess the Energy Consumption of an Electric Car in Selected Driving Cycles
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: efficiency, electric car, energy consumption, multi-valued logic trees
This paper presents the concept of an expert system supporting the decision-making process of rational energy consumption by an electric car. The driving style and the average speed achieved are very important in terms of the driving range. In addition, the influence of ambient temperature on the efficiency of the electric vehicle and ultimately on energy consumption is very important. The proposed system, based on the method of multi-valued logic trees, allows minimizing the objective function, which is aimed at minimizing the energy consumption of an electric car at different ambient temperatures. The generated decisions, directed to the energy management system, can be processed in a variety of temporal and situational dimensions. The application of the system can also provide prompts to the driver on how to adjust the driving style by operating the accelerator and brake pedal. The expert system is an open system, allowing for further generalizations and modifications.

Voltage Improvement of a Swing-Magnet-Type Generator for Harvesting Bicycle Vibrations
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: energy harvesting, magnetic flux density, resonant frequency, swing moment, vibration power generation
This paper proposes a swing-magnet-type generator that utilizes environment vibration for energy harvesting applications. This device consisted of a liquid, a swing magnet with a float, and a coil, and it was expected to generate electricity using the minute vibration of a bicycle. The vibration of the wide frequency band of the bicycle was converted into a vibration of a low-frequency mover. The yoke size of the permanent magnet affected the linkage flux and swing characteristics. Therefore, we verified the effect of the mover characteristics on the swing moment by structural simulations and vibration experiments using a linear motor. The yoke size changed the torque, which affected the resonant frequency of the swing. The magnetic-field analysis revealed the effect on the flux linkage in the yoke. The output voltage of the generator in the bicycle was 2.1 V, which could power a light-emitting diode.

Transient Thermo-Fluid Analysis of Free Falling CuCl and AgCl Droplets with Liquid-to-Solid Phase Change
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cuprous chloride, heat capacity, heat recovery, hydrogen production, liquid-to-solid phase change, numerical analysis, phase changing material (PCM), silver chloride, thermochemical cycles
Hydrogen extraction from nature is a time-consuming and energy-intensive procedure. Most of the current methods of extracting H2 are not eco-friendly, and the thermochemical copper-chlorine (Cu-Cl) cycle is a promising alternative since the ingredients are continuously recycled within the cycle without discharging pollutants into the atmosphere. In this study, the heat recovered from molten cuprous chloride (CuCl) salt produced in one of the reactors and quenched in a water bath is analyzed numerically to determine the amount of thermal energy that can be recovered and improve the efficiency of the Cu-Cl cycle. The quenching cell is simulated in an inert atmosphere since CuCl is highly reactive in the presence of oxygen. The interactions of various diameters of CuCl droplets within nitrogen (N2) are numerically modeled in COMSOL Multiphysics. Silver chloride (AgCl) is also used in this study to validate the phase-change process. It was discovered in this study that during the free fall... [more]

Predicting Mining Areas Deformations under the Condition of High Strength and Depth of Cover
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: mining area deformation, rock mass, subsidence
This paper presents an analysis of mining area deformations in the rock mass consisting of high depth and strength strata deposited in the cover. The analysis of land surveying results enabled the identification of the parameters required to predict subsidence, which differed from the typical parameters for the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The parameters of the Budryk−Knothe theory were determined based on the results of geodetic measurements. The calculations of the final state of deformations for planned mining were made using the average and characteristics for the study area parameter values. Based on experience, it is known that the range of subsidence trough depends on the mechanical properties of the rock mass. This study shows that the presence of high-strength rocks also reduces the value of the coefficient of roof control. Subsequently, calculations were made by a computer simulation of longwall mining to determine the course of indices of deformation over time. The calculation... [more]

Prediction of Hourly Air-Conditioning Energy Consumption in Office Buildings Based on Gaussian Process Regression
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 12 × 12 grid search, Gaussian process regression, prediction of air-conditioning energy consumption
Accurate prediction of air-conditioning energy consumption in buildings is of great help in reducing building energy consumption. Nowadays, most research efforts on predictive models are based on large samples, while short-term prediction with one-month or less-than-one-month training sets receives less attention due to data uncertainty and unavailability for application in practice. This paper takes a government office building in Ningbo as a case study. The hourly HVAC system energy consumption is obtained through the Ningbo Building Energy Consumption Monitoring Platform, and the meteorological data are obtained from the meteorological station of Ningbo city. This study utilizes a Gaussian process regression with the help of a 12 × 12 grid search and prediction processing to predict short-term hourly building HVAC system energy consumption by using meteorological variables and short-term building HVAC energy consumption data. Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: analytic hierarchy process, driving behaviour evaluation, entropy weight method, Kullback–Leibler divergence, naturalistic driving study, shared-electrical car
Evaluation of driving behaviour is helpful for policy development, and for designing infrastructure and an intelligent safety system for a car. This study focused on a quantitative evaluation method of driving behaviour based on the shared-electrical car. The data were obtained from the OBD interface via CAN bus and transferred to a server by 4G network. Eleven types of NDS data were selected as the indexes for driving behaviour evaluation. Kullback−Leibler divergence was calculated to confirm the minimum data quantity and ensure the effectiveness of the analysis. The distribution of the main driving behaviour parameters was compared and the change trend of the parameters was analysed in conjunction with car speed to identify the threshold for recognition of aberrant driving behaviour. The weights of indexes were confirmed by combining the analytic hierarchy process and entropy weight method. The scoring rule was confirmed according to the distribution of the indexes. February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electromagnetic transient modeling, field-programmable gate array (FPGA), modular multilevel converter (MMC), prestored parameters, real-time simulation
Aiming at the problems of the high switch numbers, complex working mechanisms, and complicated real-time simulation of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) composed of dual-port submodules, in this study, we designed a unified equivalent model of the multiple submodule network by analyzing the combination of parallel submodules in the bridge arm. The proposed model decouples the submodules that do not affect each other in the subnetwork calculation process, thereby reducing the number of prestored parameters in the subnetwork simulation. In the Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGA VC709 (Xilinx Corporation, San Jose, CA, USA) development board, we replaced the inline computation combined with the prestorage of parameters with the proposed equivalent model to optimize the execution unit structure and redesigned the FPGA-Based Real-Time Digital Solver (FRTDS). Simplified Recovery Process for Resistive Solder Bond (RSB) Hotspots Caused by Poor Soldering of Crystalline Silicon Photovoltaic Modules Using Resin
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: EVA swelling, module recovery, on-site recovery, poor soldering, power degradation, RSB hotspot
When the thickness of the solar cell wafer and the amount of Ag to be used decreases, it is the best method to recover the power of the module after use at a minimum cost and reuse the module itself. Economic recovery technology can be applied to the power degradation, caused by the resistive solder bond (RSB) hotspot by poor soldering, because the recovery process can be simplified compared to the power loss that is often greater than 30%. This study demonstrated a quick recovery of the RSB hotspot with on-site recovery technology applied with resin and verified the performance and long-term reliability of on-site recovery technology, compared to the factory recovery method, where the back sheet is removed and laminated to recover the module. Both the factory and field recovery methods confirmed recovery results closer to the initial rated power output of the samples. Each sample was degraded by the RSB hotspot to ~62−65% of the initial power output, and the recovery process successfu... [more]

Aerodynamic Interactions of Wind Lenses at Close Proximities
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: lensed turbines, vortex interactions, wind turbine interactions
The fundamental aerodynamic interactions between a pair of wind lenses is experimentally investigated. In prior work, wind tunnel testing of lensed turbines in a side-by-side configuration revealed that one lensed turbine outperformed its counterpart in terms of power production. In the current study, particle image velocimetry (PIV) was performed in the wake of three different pairs of wind lens profiles and revealed an inherent bias in the wake properties at close proximities which led to one turbine outperforming the other. The merged wake location is skewed to a single lens in the lens pair depending on the extent of cancellation of inboard vorticity magnitude. At 0.1 to 0.2 x/D,the individual wakes merge as one, at which point the vortex shedding frequency and the modal strength behind the lens pairs is reduced. Coincidentally, it is at this spacing that the net power output of lensed turbines placed in a side-by-side configuration reaches the maximum.

Dynamic Propagation and Shear Stress Disturbance of Multiple Hydraulic Fractures: Numerical Cases Study via Multi-Well Hydrofracturing Model with Varying Adjacent Spacings
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: multi-well hydrofracturing, shear stress disturbance, thermal-hydro-mechanical coupling, unstable fracture propagation, well spacing
Multi-well hydrofracturing is an important technology for forming complex fracture networks and increasing reservoir permeability. The distribution and design of horizontal wells affect fracture propagation; however, it is still unclear how the spacing between adjacent wells leads to fracture propagation, deflection and connection. In this study, the thermal-hydro-mechanical coupling effect in the hydrofracturing process is comprehensively considered and a multi-well hydrofracturing model based on the finite element−discrete element method is established. Using typical cases, the unstable propagation of hydraulic fractures in multiple horizontal wells under varying adjacent well spacings is studied. Combined with the shear stress shadow caused by in situ stress disturbed by fracture tip propagation, quantitative indexes (such as length, volume, deflection and unstable propagation behaviors of hydrofracturing fracture networks) are analyzed. The results show that the shear stress distur... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, produced water, shale energy, water treatment
In recent years, environmental concerns have urged companies in the energy sector to modify their industrial activities to facilitate greater environmental stewardship. For example, the practice of unconventional oil and gas extraction has drawn the ire of regulators and various environmental groups due to its reliance on millions of barrels of fresh water—which is generally drawn from natural sources and public water supplies—for hydraulic fracturing well stimulation. Additionally, this process generates two substantial waste streams, which are collectively characterized as flowback and produced water. Whereas flowback water is comprised of various chemical additives that are used during hydraulic fracturing; produced water is a complex mixture of microbiota, inorganic and organic constituents derived from the petroliferous strata. This review will discuss the obstacles of managing and treating flowback and produced waters, concentrating on the hardest constituents to remove by curren... [more]

A Hot-Wire Anemometer with Automatically Adjusted Dynamic Properties for Wind Energy Spectrum Analysis
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow measurement, hot-wire anemometer, transmission band adjustment, wind energy spectrum
Hot-wire anemometric measurements are often related to the determination of flow parameters in a high frequency range. Such knowledge is particularly important when analyzing the flow phenomena in the vicinity of wind turbines. The reliability of obtained results is determined by the knowledge of the properties of the system used for measurements. It concerns both the static and dynamic characteristics of individual measurement channels. In studies of hot-wire anemometric systems, a problem related to the unstable transmission bands of such systems and their high dependence on measurement conditions and the system configuration itself has been commonly indicated. This paper presents the results of an investigation of a new type of hot-wire anemometer, allowing for automatic adjustment of its dynamic characteristics under real working conditions. The presented system is dedicated to the analysis of the wind energy spectrum in experimental laboratory tests on reduced-scale models and to... [more]

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: gas–liquid two-phase flow, reflux hole, self-priming process, visualization experiment
The self-priming pump is a kind of centrifugal pump product with self-priming function, and the structural parameters of its reflux hole determine the performance. In order to reveal the mechanism of the self-priming process, we summarized the influence of structure parameters of the reflux hole on the performance of the self-priming pump. In this study, the transparent experimental pump was designed and manufactured, and a visual test bench was built. The gas−liquid two-phase flow pattern during the self-priming process with different reflux hole structure parameters was captured by high-speed camera. Results showed that: (1) the reflux hole of the self-priming pump affected the self-priming performance of the pump by affecting the backflow rate of the gas and liquid phases during the self-priming process. (2) Due to the uneven distribution of liquid velocity in the pump, the position of reflux hole had an obvious impact on the duration of self-priming middle stage, and the shortest d... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Bangladesh, citizen investment in renewable energy, community energy, energy wheeling, remote solar power plant, virtual net-metering
This study explores the virtual net-metering (VNM) option for enabling inclusive investment opportunities in renewable energy for self-consumption in Bangladesh. It focuses on consumers, such as households and businesses in multi-family and multi-story buildings, who cannot participate in traditional net-metering policy due to technical and space constraints. The study adopted the classical socket parity method to identify suitable consumers for VNM. Then it determined the consumer benefits of using VNM by calculating the net present cost (NPC) and discounted payback period. The results reveal that several consumer categories can significantly save on electricity costs through VNM. For example, commercial consumers can save more than 50% of their electricity bills by investing in a VNM-enabled remote solar power plant with a discounted payback period of fewer than six years. The discussion articulates more comprehensive benefits of VNM. It addresses challenges for renewable energy deve... [more]

The Method of Rolling Bearing Fault Diagnosis Based on Multi-Domain Supervised Learning of Convolution Neural Network
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: convolution neural network, fault diagnosis, multi-domain supervised learning, rolling bearing
The rolling bearing is a critical part of rotating machinery and its condition determines the performance of industrial equipment; it is necessary to detect rolling bearing faults as early as possible. The traditional methods of fault diagnosis are not efficient and are time-consuming. With the help of deep learning, the convolution neural network (CNN) plays a huge role in the data-driven methods of bearing fault diagnosis. However, the vibration signal is non-stationary, contains high noise, and is one-dimensional, which is difficult to analyze directly by the CNN model. Considering the multi-domain learning as an advantage of deep learning, this paper proposes a novel rolling bearing fault diagnosis approach using an improved one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) convolution neural network (CNN) of two-domain information learning. Ventilation plays a key role in underground mining. It is essential due to the natural hazards and technological processes that come with the nature of mining. However, it is highly energy consuming and generates significant operating expenditures. Fan station parameters are selected based on the needs of a particular mine but mainly consider the requirements for the period of developed mining activities. When the period of mine decommissioning begins, the parameters of the main fan station often exceed its needs. In Poland, many mines have been closed in recent years. However, sometimes, due to the necessity of pumping underground water, it cannot be done thoroughly. In such a situation, it usually turns out that the parameters of the existing fan station significantly exceed the mine’s needs.
