Keywords: European Green Deal, green jobs, Labour Economic Policies, Recovery Plan, skills, Wellbeing Economics
This paper on Political Economic and Labour Economic Policies in the European Green Deal framework analyses the Recovery Plan and Resilience Facility. It pays attention to the effects on the design of new green jobs and the necessary skills to develop this type of new positions generated, with higher labour wellbeing. The paper is focused on the analysis of the green jobs’ opportunity for Europe, at a country level, with a specific analysis made for the Spanish case. A systematisation of the concepts and calculations on the issue is made and analysed (attending the international institutions and forums proposals) to harmonise the recovery plans, apply them beyond the energy sector to other related green activities and align the public and private sector, and other critical stakeholders, in achieving this goal. The following research questions were formulated: (1) what is the estimated number of new green jobs that would be created as a consequence of the implementation of the Recovery... [more]
Optimization of an Energy Storage System for Electric Bus Fast-Charging Station
Xiaowei Ding, Weige Zhang, Shaoyuan Wei, Zhenpo Wang
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electric bus, energy management, energy storage system, fast-charging station, optimal sizing
To relieve the peak operating power of the electric grid for an electric bus fast-charging station, this paper proposes to install a stationary energy storage system and introduces an optimization problem for obtaining the optimal sizes of an energy buffer. The charging power demands of the fast-charging station are uncertain due to arrival time of the electric bus and returned state of charge of the onboard energy storage system can be affected by actual traffic conditions, ambient temperature and other factors. The introduced optimization is formulated as a stochastic program, where the power matching equality of the total charging demands of connected electric buses is described as a chance constraint by denoting a satisfaction probability, then a stochastic supremum for the operating power of the electric grid is defined by actual data and the problem finally can be solved by convex programming. A case study for an existing electric bus fast-charging station in Beijing, China was u... [more]
Reliability-Oriented Design of Inverter-Fed Low-Voltage Electrical Machines: Potential Solutions
Yatai Ji, Paolo Giangrande, Vincenzo Madonna, Weiduo Zhao, Michael Galea
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: inverter-fed machine, partial discharge, physics-of-failure, reliability-oriented design, thermal degradation
Transportation electrification has kept pushing low-voltage inverter-fed electrical machines to reach a higher power density while guaranteeing appropriate reliability levels. Methods commonly adopted to boost power density (i.e., higher current density, faster switching frequency for high speed, and higher DC link voltage) will unavoidably increase the stress to the insulation system which leads to a decrease in reliability. Thus, a trade-off is required between power density and reliability during the machine design. Currently, it is a challenging task to evaluate reliability during the design stage and the over-engineering approach is applied. To solve this problem, physics of failure (POF) is introduced and its feasibility for electrical machine (EM) design is discussed through reviewing past work on insulation investigation. Then the special focus is given to partial discharge (PD) whose occurrence means the end-of-life of low-voltage EMs. The PD-free design methodology based on u... [more]

Christine Mounaïm-Rousselle, Pierre Bréquigny, Clément Dumand, Sébastien Houillé
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ammonia, performance, pollutant, SI engine
The objective of this paper is to provide new data about the possibility of using ammonia as a carbon-free fuel in a spark-ignition engine. A current GDI PSA engine (Compression Ratio 10.5:1) was chosen in order to update the results available in the literature mainly obtained in the CFR engine. Particular attention was paid to determine the lowest possible load limit when the engine is supplied with pure ammonia or a small amount of H2, depending on engine speed, in order to highlight the limitation during cold start conditions. It can be concluded that this engine can run stably in most of these operating conditions with less than 10% H2 (of the total fuel volume) added to NH3. Measurements of exhaust pollutants, and in particular NOx, have made it possible to evaluate the possibility of diluting the intake gases and its limitation during combustion with pure H2 under slightly supercharged conditions. In conclusion, the 10% dilution limit allows a reduction of up to 40% in NOx while... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Fault Detection, fault diagnosis, fine-tuning Naive Bayesian model, PV array
With the widespread attention and research of distributed photovoltaic (PV) systems, the fault detection and diagnosis problems of distributed PV systems has become increasingly prominent. To this end, a distributed PV array fault diagnosis method based on fine-tuning Naive Bayes model for the fault conditions of PV array such as open-circuit, short-circuit, shading, abnormal degradation, and abnormal bypass diode is proposed. First, in view of the problem of less distributed PV fault data, a fine-tuning Naive Bayes model (FTNB) is proposed to improve the diagnosis accuracy. Second, the failure sample set is used to train the model. Then, the maximum power point data of the PV inverter and the meteorological data are collected for fault diagnosis. Finally, the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method are verified by the analysis of simulation. In addition, this method requires only a small number of fault sample sets and no additional measurement equipment is required, which i... [more]
A New Thermal-Solar Field Configuration: The Rotatory Fresnel Collector or Sundial

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: azimuth rotatory platform, concentrated solar power, Fresnel concept, mechanically bent mirrors, prototype
A new type of Fresnel array has been devised and constructed as an answer to the need to reduce the investment costs of solar thermal collectors, without jeopardizing their efficiency in capturing solar radiation at high temperatures. The array of mirror bands is fixed onto a horizontal platform, which rotates around a virtual vertical axis, so that the sun is in the extrapolated vertical plane of symmetry of the array. The receptor central line is also placed in said plane, and it is physically made of at least one tube at each side of the plane. The geometrical relation between the mirrors and the receptor is therefore fixed. The platform rotates with the same speed as that of the sunlight’s azimuthal component. On the contrary, the angle of incidence of the sunlight on the mirrors changes as the sun rises and declines in its daily apparent motion, but this effect does not disturb the radiation concentration kinematics, although it induces a shift along the receptor. This is a new co... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: arc fault diagnosis, intrinsic mode functions, multi-scale fuzzy entropy, support vector machine, variational mode decomposition
Arc fault diagnosis is necessary for the safety and efficiency of PV stations. This study proposed an arc fault diagnosis algorithm formed by combining variational mode decomposition (VMD), improved multi-scale fuzzy entropy (IMFE), and support vector machine (SVM). This method first uses VMD to decompose the current into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) in the time-frequency domain, then calculates the IMFE according to the IMFs associated with the arc fault. Finally, it uses SVM to detect arc faults according to IMFEs. Arc fault data gathered from a PV arc generation experiment platform are used to validate the proposed method. The results indicated the proposed method can classify arc fault data and normal data effectively.

Keywords: control algorithm, damage equivalent load, exclusion zone, floating offshore wind turbine, load reduction, resonance avoidance, resonance frequency
In this study, a resonance avoidance control algorithm was designed to address the tower resonance problem of a semi-submersible floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) and the dynamic performance of the wind turbine, floater platform, and mooring lines at two exclusion zone ranges were evaluated. The simulations were performed using Bladed, a commercial software for wind turbine analysis. The length of simulation for the analysis of the dynamic response of the six degrees of freedom (DoF) motion of the floater platform under a specific load case was 3600 s. The simulation results are presented in terms of the time domain, frequency domain, and using statistical analysis. As a result of applying the resonance avoidance control algorithm, when the exclusion zone range was ±0.5 rpm from the resonance rpm, the overall performance of the wind turbine was negatively affected, and when the range was sufficiently wide at ±1 rpm, the mean power was reduced by 0.04%, and the damage equivalent loa... A New Method to Determine the Impact of Individual Field Quantities on Cycle-to-Cycle Variations in a Spark-Ignited Gas Engine
Clemens Gößnitzer, Shawn Givler
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, cycle-to-cycle variations, internal combustion engine, RANS simulation
Cycle-to-cycle variations (CCV) in spark-ignited (SI) engines impose performance limitations and in the extreme limit can lead to very strong, potentially damaging cycles. Thus, CCV force sub-optimal engine operating conditions. A deeper understanding of CCV is key to enabling control strategies, improving engine design and reducing the negative impact of CCV on engine operation. This paper presents a new simulation strategy which allows investigation of the impact of individual physical quantities (e.g., flow field or turbulence quantities) on CCV separately. As a first step, multi-cycle unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (uRANS) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of a spark-ignited natural gas engine are performed. For each cycle, simulation results just prior to each spark timing are taken. Next, simulation results from different cycles are combined: one quantity, e.g., the flow field, is extracted from a snapshot of one given cycle, and all other quantities are ta... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: absorption chiller, and power, combined cooling, emission, heating, microturbine
The reliance on coal-fired power generation has gradually reduced with the growing interest in the environment and safety, and the environmental effects of power generation are now being considered. However, it can be difficult to provide stable power to end-users while minimizing environmental pollution by replacing coal-fired systems with combined cooling, heat, and power (CCHP) systems that use natural gas, because CCHP systems have various power output vulnerabilities. Therefore, purchasing power from external electric grids is essential in areas where CCHP systems are built; hence, optimal CCHP controls should also consider energy purchased from external grids. This study proposes a two-stage algorithm to optimally control CCHP systems. In Stage One, the optimal energy mix using the Lagrange multiplier method for state-wide grids from which CCHP systems purchase deficient electricity was calculated. In Stage Two, the purchased volumes from these grids were used as inputs to the pr... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fracture–vuggy reservoir, multivariate nonlinear regression, single well productivity prediction, three-dimensional seismic attribute, triple medium model
Single well productivity is an important index of oilfield production planning and economic evaluation. Due to fracture-vuggy reservoirs being characteristically strongly heterogeneous and having complex fluid distribution, the commonly used single well productivity prediction methods for fracture-vuggy reservoirs have many problems, such as difficulty in obtaining reservoir parameters and producing large errors in the forecast values of single well productivity. In this paper, based on the triple medium model, the Laplace transform and Duhamel principle are used to obtain the productivity equation of a single well in a fracture-vuggy reservoir. Secondly, the seismic attributes affecting the productivity of a single well are selected using the Spearman and Pearson correlation index calculation method. Finally, the selected seismic attributes are introduced into the productivity equation of the triple medium model through the interporosity flow coefficient and the elastic storativity ra... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: geographic information systems, Machine Learning, power distribution networks, system resilience
Currently, distribution system operators (DSOs) are asked to operate distribution grids, managing the rise of the distributed generators (DGs), the rise of the load correlated to heat pump and e-mobility, etc. Nevertheless, they are asked to minimize investments in new sensors and telecommunication links and, consequently, several nodes of the grid are still not monitored and tele-controlled. At the same time, DSOs are asked to improve the network’s resilience, looking for a reduction in the frequency and impact of power outages caused by extreme weather events. The paper presents a machine learning GIS-based approach to estimate a secondary substation’s load profiles, even in those cases where monitoring sensors are not deployed. For this purpose, a large amount of data from different sources has been collected and integrated to describe secondary substation load profiles adequately. Based on real measurements of some secondary substations (medium-voltage to low-voltage interface) giv... [more]

Keywords: cargo bicycles, CVRP, last-mile logistics, MTSP
Efficient vehicle routing is a major concern for any supply chain, especially when dealing with last-mile deliveries in highly urbanized areas. In this paper problems considering last-mile delivery in areas with the restrictions of motorized traffic are described and different types of cargo bikes are reviewed. The paper describes methods developed in order to solve a combination of problems for cargo bicycle logistics, including efficient packing, routing and load-dependent speed constraints. Proposed models apply mathematical descriptions of problems, including the Knapsack Problem, Traveling Salesman Problem and Traveling Thief Problem. Based on synthetically generated data, we study the efficiency of the proposed algorithms. Models described in this paper are implemented in Python programming language and will be further developed and used for solving the problems of electric cargo bikes’ routing under real-world conditions.

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: community energy storage, local energy market, peer-to-peer energy trade, reinforcement learning, smart grid
Many studies have proposed a peer-to-peer energy market where the prosumers’ actions, including energy consumption, charge and discharge schedule of energy storage systems, and transactions in local energy markets, are controlled by a central operator. In this paper, prosumers’ actions are not controlled by an operator, and the prosumers freely participate in the local energy market to trade energy with other prosumers. We designed and modeled a local energy market with a management algorithm that uses community energy storage for prosumers who competitively participate in trade in the real-time energy market. We propose an energy-trade management algorithm that manages the trades of prosumers in two phases based on bids and offers submitted by prosumers. The first phase is to manage the trade of prosumers who have submitted fair prices to trade with other prosumers in the real-time energy market. The second phase is managing the trade of prosumers that could not trade in the first pha... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: passive cooling, phase change material, photovoltaic system
Photovoltaic modules during sunny days can reach temperatures 35 °C above the ambient temperature, which strongly influences their performance and electrical efficiency as power losses can be up to −0.65%/°C. To minimize and control the PV panel temperature, the scientific community has proposed different strategies and innovative approaches, one of them through passive cooling with phase change materials (PCM). However, further investigation, including the effects of geometric shape, insulation, phase change temperature, ambient temperature, and solar radiation on the PV module power output and efficiency, needs further optimization and research. Therefore, the current work aims to investigate several system configurations and different PCMs (RT42, RT31, and RT25) and compare the system with and without insulation through computational fluid dynamic (CFD) tools. The final goal is to optimise and control the temperature of PV modules and evaluate their system efficiency and energy gene... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: carbon disclosure, financial performance, fortune 500
In the context of low-carbon constrained development, in order to avoid the risk brought by climate change, more and more companies choose to disclose carbon information, respond to the national policy of carbon emission reduction and focus on the sustainable development of enterprises. This paper will investigate the impact of carbon disclosure on financial performance based on the 2011−2018 CDP report, taking the Fortune 500 companies as a sample. The study finds that for carbon-intensive industries, carbon disclosure cannot significantly contribute to the improvement of financial performance in the current period, but for carbon-non-intensive industries, carbon disclosure can significantly contribute to the improvement of financial performance in the current period, and the positive impact of carbon disclosure on financial performance in the current period can be extended to the next period. Finally, based on the findings of the empirical study, this paper puts forward policy recomm... [more]

Keywords: Central Pomerania, classification and regression trees (CRT), factors determining the propensity to use external capital, farms, financial energy, logistic regression, Poland
The aim of this study was to identify and assess the factors influencing the increase in the financial energy of a farm through the use of external capital, taking into account the farmer’s and farm characteristics. For its implementation, a logistic regression model and a classification-regression tree analysis (CRT) were used. The study was conducted on a group of farms in Central Pomerania (Poland) participating in the system of collecting and using data from farms (Farm Accountancy Data Network—FADN). Data on 348 farms were used for the analyses, obtained through a survey conducted in 2020 with the use of a questionnaire. Based on the analysis of the research results presented in the literature to date, it was established that the use of external capital in a farm as a factor increasing financial energy is determined, on the one hand, by the socio-demographic characteristics of the farmer and the characteristics of the farm, and on the other hand, by the availability of external fi... Keywords: coupled inductor, DC microgrid protection, pole-to-ground fault protection, solid-state DC circuit breaker
Ensuring a protection scheme in a DC distribution system is more difficult to achieve against pole-to-ground faults than in AC distribution system because of the absence of zero crossing points and low line impedance. To complement the major obstacle of limiting the fault current, several compositions have been proposed related to mechanical switching and solid-state switching. Among them, solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs) are considered to be a possible solution to limit fast fault current. However, they may cause problems in circuit complexity, reliability, and cost-related troubles because of the use of multiple power semiconductor devices and additional circuit configuration to commutate the current. This paper proposes a SSCB with a coupled inductor (SSCB-CI) that has a symmetrical configuration. The circuit is comprised of passive components like commutation capacitors, a CI, and damping resistors. Thus, the proposed SSCB-CI offers the advantages of a simple circuit configurat... [more]
A Multifaceted Challenge to Enhance Multicriteria Decision Support for Energy Policy

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytical hierarchy process, energy policy, energy technology, macroeconomic analysis, multicriteria decision-making, sustainability assessment
The necessity to enhance multicriteria decision in the industry is challenging to support the current energy policy. European Union regulations and guidelines provide the guideline for minimalizing environmental harms but are not enough in their actions for providing effective sustainability assessment. None of the available standalone assessment methods do capture the comprehensibility of multicriteria decision-making. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate a challenge to incorporate the multicriteria sustainability decision-making method to mainstream energy policy, which is lacking in European Union policies. The novelty of the research lies in constructing a multicriteria sustainability approach for assessing energy technologies performance for embodying into a mainstream energy policy. In this study, the multicriteria decision-making—an approach combining life cycle-based methods, analytical hierarchy process, as well as macroeconomic analysis, was used to demonstrate the applica... Keywords: combustion, combustion indexes, kinetics, olive-mill wastes, TG-FTIR, thermogravimetry TG/DTG
In this study, the combustion of olive byproducts was investigated using the TG-FTIR technique. Different types of olive biomass were considered: twigs, leaves, olive-mill waste from the two-phase decanting method, and wastewater from the three-phase system. The reaction regions, ignition, and burnout temperatures at different heating rates were determined using TG/DTG analysis and the thermogravimetry results. Comprehensive combustion, ignition, burnout, and flammability indexes were also calculated. The highest combustion index values were obtained for waste from the three-phase system, followed by the two-phase decanting method, then with leaves and small twigs. The order of the index values indicated that the sample from the three-phase process ignited more quickly and yielded faster. The changes in activation energy calculated using different model-free isoconversional methods—Friedman, Ozawa−Flynn−Wall, and Kissinger−Akahira−Sunose—fell within the range of 130−140 kJ/kmol. Keywords: energy consumption, energy management strategy, energy organizations, secondary energy sources, tax, tax evasions, tax fraud
This paper presents an energy management strategy for secondary energy sources and their optimization in the context of the tax gap on mineral oils represented by the tax gap on petrol and diesel. Energy companies face drastic economic and environmental challenges; therefore, this area necessarily requires the setting up of transparent economic instruments and, of course, production. The tax gap in VAT collection represents the gap between how much the state could potentially collect from VAT in accordance with the law and how much VAT really comes into the state coffers. The loss of tax revenues is caused by unpaid and undeclared tax liability. The Estimation of the Gap on Corporate Tax in Slovakia is a pilot project of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in cooperation with the Institute for Financial Policy (IFP). The results present the estimation of the tax gap within a two-year delay. It is necessary to consider the estimation of the tax gap in the last two years as preliminary... [more]

Keywords: energy pile group, ground heat exchanger, heat flux, long-term performance, numerical modelling, thermal performance, unsaturated soils
Geothermal energy piles (GEPs) are an environmentally friendly heat exchange technology that dualizes the role of the structural foundation pile for load support and in meeting the building heating/cooling need. Energy loops made from high-density polyethylene, which allow heat carrier fluid circulation, are fitted into the pile foundation elements to extract or inject and store heat energy in the soil surrounding the pile. This paper reports the results of a numerical study investigating the long-term behaviour of a group of energy piles embedded in unsaturated soils (sand and clay) under continuous cyclic heating and cooling load. Additionally, two scenarios were investigated where: (1) the whole GEPs were heated and cooled collectively; (2) alternate piles were heated and cooled. It was found that the trend of temperature magnitude at all the observed locations decreases with time as a result of the continuous heating and cooling cycles. Furthermore, subjecting alternate GEPs to the... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: bio-inspired optimization, demand-side management, holonic systems
The transformation of energy grids towards smart grids is driven by numerous political, economic, and ecological goals. As part of this process, the centralized top-down architecture of energy grids changes towards increasingly decentralized structures. It is widely accepted that the challenges emerging from this transition threaten the resilient operation of energy grids. For instance, the volatility of renewable energy sources challenges the required balance between demand and supply; their distribution in the energy grid likewise complicates their coordination. Holarchies are a promising (systems-of-systems) architectural pattern for smart grids fostering fast isolation and self-sustained operation of subparts (so-called holons), as well as supporting dynamic reconfigurations of the grid’s structure. To leverage these properties to increase the resilience of smart grids, we propose a system model that combines a holonic architecture and locally available resources offered by prosume... [more]
