Off-Grid Rural Electrification in India Using Renewable Energy Resources and Different Battery Technologies with a Dynamic Differential Annealed Optimization
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: different batteries, integrated renewable energy system, off-grid microgrid, optimization techniques
Several families in India live in remote places with no access to grid-connected power supply due to their remoteness. The study area chosen from the Indian state of Odisha does not have an electrical power supply due to its distant location. As a result, this study analyzed the electrification process using Renewable Energy (RE) resources available in the locality. However, these RE resources are limited by their dependency on weather conditions and time. So, a robust battery storage system is needed for a continuous power supply. Hence, the Nickel Iron (Ni-Fe), Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) and Lead Acid (LA) battery technologies have been analyzed to identify a battery technology that is both technologically and economically viable. Using the available RE resources in the study area, such as photovoltaic and biomass energy resources, as well as the various battery technologies, three configurations have been modelled, such as Photovoltaic Panels (PVP)/Biomass Generator(BIOMG)/BATTERY(Ni-Fe),... Management of Lignocellulosic Waste towards Energy Recovery by Pyrolysis in the Framework of Circular Economy Strategy
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Biomass, circular economy, energy recovery, pyrolysis, waste management
The article presents the possibilities of effective management of lignocellulosic waste by including it in the circular economy. The pyrolysis process was chosen as the thermal conversion method. This approach, due to a high flexibility of the obtained products, better quality of the solid residue (char), and the lower emission of pollutants into the atmosphere, e.g., SO2 and NOx, is a competitive solution compared to combustion process. Wood waste from alder and pine were analyzed. As part of laboratory tests, the elementary composition was determined, i.e., C, H, N, S, and O. The pyrolysis process was carried out at a temperature of 600 °C on an experimental stand for the conversion of solid fuels in a stationary bed. For the obtained data, using the Ansys Chemkin-Pro calculation tool, the detailed chemical composition of gaseous products of the pyrolysis process was modeled for a varying temperature range and residence time in the reactor. The studies have shown that for certain pro... [more]

Energy Security Assessment of Emerging Economies under Global and Local Challenges
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: COVID-19, emerging economy, Energy Efficiency, energy policy, energy security, energy sustainability, fluctuations, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Ukraine
This paper proposes methodological approaches to assessing the impact of renewable energy and energy efficiency development on emerging economies’ energy security. It is suggested to supplement the current methodology for assessing energy security with the decoupling index of the renewable energy financial burden on the state budget, the energy efficiency decoupling index, the households’ energy poverty indicator, the index of capacity development for balancing electricity generation volumes, and the energy fluctuations indicator. These indices provide a comprehensive assessment of energy security under the latest challenges. Thus, the COVID-19 pandemic in the Ukrainian energy sector led to the “green and coal paradox”, when the government decided to keep green electricity generation but limit nuclear generation. It required increased flexible capacities (thermal generation) and led to a rise in electricity prices and environmental pollution. Forecasting energy fluctuations with Butter... [more]

A Review of the Current State of Technology of Capacitive Wireless Power Transfer
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: capacitive coupling, capacitive wireless power transfer, compensation networks, converters, electric coupling, electric fields, resonance, wireless power transfer
Wireless power transfer allows the transfer of energy from a transmitter to a receiver without electrical connections. Compared to galvanic charging, it displays several advantages, including improved user experience, higher durability and better mobility. As a result, both consumer and industrial markets for wireless charging are growing rapidly. The main market share of wireless power is based on the principle of inductive power transfer, a technology based on coupled coils that transfer energy via varying magnetic fields. However, inductive charging has some disadvantages, such as high cost, heat dissipation, and bulky inductors. A promising alternative is capacitive wireless power transfer that utilizes a varying electric field as medium to transfer energy. Its wireless link consists of conductive plates. The purpose of this paper is to review the state of the art, link the theoretical concepts to practical cases and to indicate where further research is required to take next steps... [more]

Criticality Analysis and Maintenance of Solar Tower Power Plants by Integrating the Artificial Intelligence Approach
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, bayesian network, criticality analysis, maintenance, solar tower power plants
Maintenance of solar tower power plants (STPP) is very important to ensure production continuity. However, random and non-optimal maintenance can increase the intervention cost. In this paper, a new procedure, based on the criticality analysis, was proposed to improve the maintenance of the STPP. This procedure is the combination of three methods, which are failure mode effects and criticality analysis (FMECA), Bayesian network and artificial intelligence. The FMECA is used to estimate the criticality index of the different elements of STPP. Moreover, corrections and improvements were introduced on the criticality index values based on the expert advice method. The modeling and the simulation of the FMECA estimations incorporating the expert advice method corrections were performed using the Bayesian network. The artificial neural network is used to predicate the criticality index of the STPP exploiting the database obtained from the Bayesian network simulations. The results showed a g... [more]

Reliability Updating of Offshore Wind Substructures by Use of Digital Twin Information
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: digital twins, offshore wind substructures, probabilistic fatigue assessment, reliability updating, uncertainty quantification
This paper presents a probabilistic framework for updating the structural reliability of offshore wind turbine substructures based on digital twin information. In particular, the information obtained from digital twins is used to quantify and update the uncertainties associated with the structural dynamics and load modeling parameters in fatigue damage accumulation. The updated uncertainties are included in a probabilistic model for fatigue damage accumulation used to update the structural reliability. The updated reliability can be used as input to optimize decision models for operation and maintenance of existing structures and design of new structures. The framework is exemplified based on two numerical case studies with a representative offshore wind turbine and information acquired from previously established digital twins. In this context, the effect of updating soil stiffness and wave loading, which constitute two highly uncertain and sensitive parameters, is investigated. It is... [more]

Impact of Wind and Solar Generation on the Italian Zonal Electricity Price
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: inter-zonal exchange, Italian wholesale power market, Merit Order Effect, multivariate regression, solar power integration, wind power integration
This paper assesses the impact of increasing wind and solar power generation on zonal market prices in the Italian electricity market from 2015 to 2019, employing a multivariate regression model. A significant aspect to be considered is how the additional wind and solar generation brings changes in the inter-zonal export and import flows. We constructed a zonal dataset consisting of electricity price, demand, wind and solar generation, net input flow, and gas price. In the first and second steps of this study, the impact of additional wind and solar generation that is distributed across zonal borders is calculated separately based on an empirical approach. Then, the Merit Order Effect of the intermittent renewable energy sources is quantified in every six geographical zones of the Italian day-ahead market. The results generated by the multivariate regression model reveal that increasing wind and solar generation decreases the daily zonal electricity price. Therefore, the Merit Order Ef... [more]

Storage and Upgrading of Biogas by Physicochemical Purification in a Sudano-Sahelian Context
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biogas, biomethane, purification
The global energy trends are currently dominated by a massive use of fossil non-renewable energy sources which are progressively depleting. In this way, the production of second-generation biogas production from organic wastes by the dark fermentation process offers, therefore, an attractive solution to diversify the present energy mix. The development of biogas production units has led to an increase in the quantity of biomethane, but it contains impurities. A biomethane purification and storage system was developed in this work to improve the quality of this biofuel. Solutions were first developed to capture carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, water, and volatile organic compounds found in the initial biogas. These solutions were based on a system of purification made up of water absorption reactions and iron oxide, activated charcoal, and steel wool adsorption. Thus, the biomethane obtained after purification has been stored in an inflatable balloon before being compressed into a refr... [more]

Study on Deliverability Evaluation of Staged Fractured Horizontal Wells in Tight Oil Reservoirs
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: deliverability evaluation, fractal, fracture network, staged fractured horizontal wells, tight oil reservoirs
At present, the existing deliverability evaluation models mainly consider the impact of specific factors on production, and the description of the complex fracture network structure primarily remains at the stage of an ideal dual-pore medium with uniform distribution. However, this cannot reflect the actual fracture network structure and fluid flow law of fractured horizontal wells. Thus, in this paper, a non-uniform fracture network structure is proposed considering the influence of the threshold pressure gradient and stress sensitivity characteristics on the production performance of horizontal wells. The stress sensitivity and the fractal theory are combined to characterize the permeability of the complex fracture network, and a three-zone compound unsteady deliverability model for staged fractured horizontal wells in tight oil reservoirs is successfully developed. Laplace transformation, perturbation theory, and numerical inversion are applied to obtain the semi-analytical solution... [more]

Study of Flow and Heat Transfer for the Supercritical Hydrogen in Spallation-Type Cylindrical Neutron Moderator
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: cylindrical neutron moderator, numerical method, Optimization, spallation neutron source, supercritical hydrogen
Pipe height in cylindrical neutron moderator is an important factor to flow pattern, temperature distribution and even the neutron characters. In this paper, the steady-state thermal analysis of cold neutron moderator is carrying out with different heights, conjugated heat transfer method and one-way coupled with a neutron transfer software. The different pipe heights, which is the jet-to-surface distances (H/D = 0.5~6), were compared using a 2D moderator model. The results show that vortex size and velocity gradient from container wall to vortex center vary with H/D, the center of recirculation zone nearly remain constant, and heat transfer effect is weakened on the target bottom surface. With H/D increasing, the velocity at bottom target surface is progressively decreased, and cooling effect is poor, leading to the rise in temperature. The optimal range cooling performance is (H/D) = 0.5~1 at Re = 1.7 × 105, and the enhancement of beam power further strengthens the thermal deposition... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: multi-scenario simulation, system dynamics, water–energy coupling system
In this work, based on the concept of collaborative water−energy development, a multi-scenario system dynamics simulation model of a water−energy coupling system was constructed by using the system dynamics modeling method. The model was composed of four subsystems: society, economic, water resources, and energy. Taking Ningbo City as the research location to run the simulation model, the analysis of the validity of the model showed that the relative error between the historical data and the simulation results of the model was less than 10%, which proved that the model passed the test. In this paper, based on the scenario of business an usual (BAU), three scenarios of water-saving scenario (WSS), energy-saving scenario (ESS), and comprehensive savings (CS, the comprehensive scenario considers water-saving and energy-saving together) were designed, and the simulation indexes in the three scenarios were refined in order to strengthen the control of water-saving policies, improve the effe... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery, branch-and-bound algorithm, building energy, home energy management systems, model-based predictive control, photovoltaics, sensitivity analysis
At a global level, buildings constitute one of the most significant energy-consuming sectors. Current energy policies in the EU and the U.S. emphasize that buildings, particularly those in the residential sector, should employ renewable energy and storage and efficiently control the total energy system. In this work, we propose a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) by employing a Model-Based Predictive Control (MBPC) framework, implemented using a Branch-and-Bound (BAB) algorithm. We discuss the selection of different parameters, such as time-step, to employ prediction and control horizons and the effect of the weather in the system performance. We compare the economic performance of the proposed approach against a real PV-battery system existing in a household equipped with several IoT devices, concluding that savings larger than 30% can be obtained, whether on sunny or cloudy days. To the best of our knowledge, these are excellent values compared with existing solutions available in... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active clamp snubber, bidirectional converter, flyback snubber, off-grid charging station, resistive capacitive diode snubber
With the penetration of electric vehicles (EVs), there have been paradigm shifts in the transportation sector. EVs are ideally considered to be clean and eco-friendly, but they can overload the existing grid infrastructure and significantly contribute towards carbon emissions depending on the source of charging. The ideal solution is to develop a charging infrastructure for EVs that is integrated with solar energy technology. This paper presents the design of a zero-voltage switching snubber-based bidirectional converter for an off-grid charging station for EVs. The proposed system includes a solar array with a boost converter, a bidirectional converter with snubber circuits and an energy storage unit. A comprehensive comparison between various types of snubbers, such as the resistive capacitive diode snubber, active clamp snubber and flyback snubber, is presented. This type of system configuration clamps the rail voltage, due to the difference in current between leakage inductance and... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic voltage stability, remote island power system, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, virtual synchronous generator
Increasing the proportion of renewable energy generations in remote island power systems is becoming essential for realizing decarbonized society. However, since inverter-connected renewable energies have different generation characteristics from conventional generators, the massive penetration can adversely affect system stability. In particular, fault events in such weak remote systems can cause fast voltage collapse, and there is a need to assess dynamic voltage stability. This study attempts dynamic voltage stability assessment using the critical boundary index (CBI) and investigates the impact of the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) on dynamic voltage stability. A remote island power system and VSG are modeled, and time-domain simulations are conducted with case studies of fault events. The simulation results show the potential of CBI to use for dynamic voltage stability assessment. Furthermore, the VSG can provide suitable power output during fault events and improve dynamic v... Observer Design for a Variable Moment of Inertia System
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: identification, Modelling, nonlinear control, nonlinear observer
Variable moment of inertia systems are common, and a popular laboratory system of this type is the “ball-and-beam”. Such systems are, however, nonlinear and often unstable. Efficient control requires full state information (or at least partial velocities), which are generally difficult to measure. That is why the design of state observers is a relevant problem. In this paper, a new design of an observer is proposed. This new nonlinear observer uses partial output injection and the circle criterion to ensure semiglobal stability. Moreover, we present a complete modeling of the system and systematic testing of the observer in comparison to a baseline in the form of a linear observer. The results show that the designed observer outperforms its linear counterpart and does not impede control.

Exploring the Relationship between Residential CO2 Emissions, Urbanization, Economic Growth, and Residential Energy Consumption: Evidence from the North Africa Region
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ARDL bounds testing, economic growth, North Africa, residential CO2 emissions, Toda-Yamamoto Granger causality tests, urbanization
Rapid urbanization, coupled with income growth, will inevitably cause the residential energy consumption in the North Africa region to continue to increase, with adverse effects on the climate, human health, and the economy. In these regards, this paper explores the relationship between residential carbon dioxide emissions (RCO2), urbanization, economic growth, and residential energy use in four North African countries (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt) over the period 1990−2016. To do this, we used the bounds cointegration and the Toda−Yamamoto Granger causality test. The existence of cointegration relationships was confirmed for the four countries. In the long run, the environment Kuznets curve relationship between increased income per capita and RCO2 emissions was verified for only Morocco and Tunisia. The causality analysis also reveals a combination of neutral, unidirectional, and bidirectional relationships for all countries. The RCO2 emissions have not proved to be a limitin... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow uniformity, heat exchanger, perforated plate, sodium-cooled fast reactor, steam generator
The steam generator in a nuclear power plant is a type of heat exchanger in which heat transfer occurs from the hot fluid in multiple channels to the cold fluid. Therefore, a uniform flow over multiple channels is necessary to improve heat exchanger efficiency. The study aims at experimentally investigating the improvement of flow uniformity by the perforated plate in the heat exchanger used for a sodium-cooled fast reactor stream generator. A 1/4-scale experimental model for one heat exchanger unit with 33 × 66 channels was manufactured. The working fluid was water. A perforated plate was systematically designed using numerical simulations to improve the flow uniformity over the 33 × 66 channels. As a result, the flow uniformity greatly improved at a slight cost of pressure drop. To validate the numerical results, planar particle image velocimetry measurements were performed on the selected planes in the inlet and outlet headers. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy and exergy analysis, energy utilization ratio, exergetic efficiency, hybrid solar drying (HSD), rosemary
This study aimed to examine the energy and exergy indices of the rosemary drying process in a hybrid-solar dryer (HSD) and the effects of air-drying parameters on these thermodynamic indices. Drying experiments were carried out at four levels of air temperature (40, 50, 60, and 70 ∘C) and three levels of air velocity (1, 1.5, and 2 m/s). Energy and exergy were calculated by application of the first and second laws of thermodynamics. Based on the principal laws, energy efficiency, exergy losses, and exergetic improvement potential rate, were evaluated. The results showed that the energy utilization ratio (EUR) ranged from 0.246 to 0.502, and energy utilization (EU) ranged from 0.017 to 0.060 (kJ/s). Exergy loss and efficiency varied from 0.009 to 0.028 (kJ/s) and from 35.08% to 78.5%, respectively, and increased with increased temperature and air velocity. Energy System Monitoring Based on Fuzzy Cognitive Modeling and Dynamic Clustering
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic clustering, energy system, fuzzy cognitive model, monitoring
A feature of energy systems (ESs) is the diversity of objects, as well as the variety and manifold of the interconnections between them. A method for monitoring ESs clusters is proposed based on the combined use of a fuzzy cognitive approach and dynamic clustering. A fuzzy cognitive approach allows one to represent the interdependencies between ESs objects in the form of fuzzy impact relations, the analysis results of which are used to substantiate indicators for fuzzy clustering of ESs objects and to analyze the stability of clusters and ESs. Dynamic clustering methods are used to monitor the cluster structure of ESs, namely, to assess the drift of cluster centers, to determine the disappearance or emergence of new clusters, and to unite or separate clusters of ESs.

Keywords: climate change, electricity grid, Energy, Hydrogen, renewables, Sustainable Development Goals
The main part of mankind’s ecological footprint is the carbon footprint, a measure of the environmental impact of humanity’s energy release from fossil fuels. The use of fossil fuels will have to change in the forthcoming decades to a largely climate-neutral use of solar energy enabled by dramatic cost reductions for PV and wind energy systems. The impact of this trend on world society has been discussed in a previous paper. In connection with these important technical developments, the role of electricity, its transport and storage will alter in the coming decades, allowing the design and use of larger and larger electricity grids and a parallel use of hydrogen for both storage and energy transport. This will further change the energy landscape of the world. All these developments and their relationship to global sustainable development are elaborated in this cross-disciplinary paper by specifically analyzing whether the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations are an effec...
