A Review on Power Electronics Technologies for Electric Mobility
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: battery charging systems, electric mobility, electrical power grid, inductive wireless power transfer, power electronics, railway systems, smart grids, unified traction and battery charging systems
Concerns about greenhouse gas emissions are a key topic addressed by modern societies worldwide. As a contribution to mitigate such effects caused by the transportation sector, the full adoption of electric mobility is increasingly being seen as the main alternative to conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, which is supported by positive industry indicators, despite some identified hurdles. For such objective, power electronics technologies play an essential role and can be contextualized in different purposes to support the full adoption of electric mobility, including on-board and off-board battery charging systems, inductive wireless charging systems, unified traction and charging systems, new topologies with innovative operation modes for supporting the electrical power grid, and innovative solutions for electrified railways. Embracing all of these aspects, this paper presents a review on power electronics technologies for electric mobility where some of the main t... [more]

Friends or Foes? Political Synergy or Competition between Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: climate policy, Energy Efficiency, EU climate policy, policy competition, policy cycle, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Energy efficiency measures and the deployment of renewable energy are commonly presented as two sides of the same coin—as necessary and synergistic measures to decarbonize energy systems and reach the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement. Here, we quantitatively investigate the policies and performances of the EU Member States to see whether renewables and energy efficiency policies are politically synergistic or if they rather compete for political attention and resources. We find that Member States, especially the ones perceived as climate leaders, tend to prioritize renewables over energy efficiency in target setting. Further, almost every country performs well in either renewable energy or energy efficiency, but rarely performs well in both. We find no support for the assertion that the policies are synergistic, but some evidence that they compete. However, multi-linear regression models for performance show that performance, especially in energy efficiency, is also strongly as... [more]

Review of Methods Used for Selecting Pumps as Turbines (PATs) and Predicting Their Characteristic Curves
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: characteristic curves, hydropower, PAT, prediction model, pump as turbine
The use of Pumps As Turbines (PATs) can be the best solution for exploiting small hydraulic resources. Pump manufacturers do not provide the performances of their machines running in reverse mode, thus several authors developed appropriate prediction models. Some of them can only correlate the pump Best Efficiency Point (BEP) to the PAT corresponding one; other ones are able to obtain the characteristic curves. In this paper, a review of these methodologies is presented with the aim to find the best strategy that allows a designer of a small hydropower plant to select the PAT to be used and to predict its characteristic curves. The study also highlights the possibility of disassembling some models in order to merge the best parts in a more reliable strategy.

Carbon Sequestration by Reforesting Legacy Grasslands on Coal Mining Sites
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: afforestation, Appalachian forests, carbon offsets, mountaintop coal mining, soil carbon sequestration
Future carbon management during energy production will rely on carbon capture and sequestration technology and carbon sequestration methods for offsetting non-capturable losses. The present study quantifies carbon sequestration via reforestation using measurements and modeling for recent and legacy surface coal mining grasslands that are re-restored through tree planting. This paper focuses on a case study of legacy coal mining sites in the southern Appalachia the United States. This five million-hectare region has a surface mining footprint of approximately 12% of the land area, and the reclamation method was primarily grassland. The results of the soil carbon sequestration rates for restored forest soils approach 2.0 MgC ha−1 y−1 initially and average 1.0 MgC ha−1 y−1 for the first fifty years after reclamation. Plant, coarse root and litter carbon sequestration rates were 2.8 MgC ha−1 y−1 with plant carbon estimated to equilibrate to 110 MgC ha−1 after forty years. Plant, root and l... [more]

Facility Energy Management Application of HBIM for Historical Low-Carbon Communities: Design, Modelling and Operation Control of Geothermal Energy Retrofit in a Real Italian Case Study
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: BIM operational management, building energy efficiency, GEOFIT Horizon 2020 project, geothermal energy retrofit, historical building, historical building information modelling, renewable energy integration
The highest challenge of energy efficiency of building stock is achieving improved performance in existing buildings and, especially, in heritage buildings which per se are characterized by massive limitations against the implementation of the most sophisticated solutions for energy saving. In Italy, historical buildings represent more than 30% of the building stock and the vast majority require energy retrofit, while ensuring the preservation of the heritage value and acceptable comfort conditions. In this context, historical buildings must be retrofitted and re-functioned by introducing innovative technologies aimed at reducing energy consumption and improving human comfort, health, and safety. To this aim, this study implements the Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM) approach for the integrated modeling, monitoring, management, and maintenance of a novel geothermal system involving horizontal ground source heat exchangers (GHEXs) coupled to an adsorption heat pump for the... Experimental Investigations on Lateral Dispersion Coefficients of Fuel Particles in Large-Scale Circulating Fluidized Bed Boilers with Different Coal Feeding Modes
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CFB, dispersion coefficient, flue gas composition, heat balance
The dispersion characteristics of fuel particles over the bed have always been a key consideration in the design of fluidized beds. However, the lateral fuel dispersion coefficients (Dsr) reported in the previous literature widely ranged from 10−4 to 10−1 m2/s, which were hard to be directly applied in large-scale CFB (circulating fluidized bed) boilers with wider bed width (close to 30 m) and variable coal feeding modes. To solve this problem, field tests were conducted on the first 600 MW CFB boiler in this paper, and the distributions of flue gas composition and flue gas temperature were obtained near the coal feeding port under four working conditions. The dispersion characteristics of fuel particles were analyzed in detail combined with the dispersion model. In addition, a new method based on bed heat balance was also proposed to estimate Dsr and applied in a 300 MW CFB boiler with a different coal feeding mode. The results revealed that Dsr through the local heat balance method r... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: annular, melting, phase change material (PCM), shell-coil, solidification
The latent heat thermal energy storage units are very popular because of their high energy density and almost close to constant temperature during the charging/discharging. In the present study has been proposed new shell-and-coil geometry with a shifted coil position to enhance the performance of phase change thermal magazine. The experimental investigations have been performed both for the melting and solidification process of coconut oil for constant wall temperature conditions. The experiments have been carried out for cylindrical as well as coil shape geometry of the TES unit. In the case of annular TES, the copper tube with outer diameter d = 10 mm and total length equal to 165 mm were used (4). In the case of shell-and-coil TES the coil has been also made of a copper tube but with an outer diameter d = 6 mm. The total length of the tube was 460 mm. However, the length of the tube element that has been used in the process of bending the coil had a total length equal to 360 mm. Th... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coefficient of performance, compressor discharge pressure, energy efficient, heat pump dryer, moisture content, oregano
The current study shows an empirical analysis to establish the effects of the variations in compressor discharge pressure on the drying performance of aromatic herbs, in terms of the coefficient of performance (CoP), moisture content (MC), specific moisture extraction rate (SMER), drying temperature, drying time and energy consumption. In conducting the research, a heat pump drying system was utilized as a mechanism for dehydrating herbs, seeds, and fruits. It was used thanks to its benefits like higher efficiency and its low power consumption. Three levels of discharge pressure were considered, 1380 kPa, 1100 kPa, and 827 kPa, using 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R134a) as a refrigerant and oregano leaves as the main product. The findings show that, concerning the same oregano moisture sample, the lower the compressor discharge pressure, the lower drying temperature, also, the higher drying time was obtained. Despite the fact that the CoP decreased with the compressor discharge pressure,... [more]

Influence of Varieties and Organic Fertilizer in the Elaboration of a New Poplar-Straw Pellet and Its Emissions in a Domestic Boiler
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Biomass, combustion gases, emission factors, organic fertiliser, poplar clone
Pollutants resulting from domestic combustion would have harmful effects on public health, causing disturbances in the atmosphere chemistry and the climate. In this work, the emissions from the combustion of pellets made of 80% poplar (organically fertilized) and 20% cereal straw (Triticum aestivum) have been analysed. Poplar wood from I-214 and AF-8 clones was obtained from fertilized and non-fertilized plots (CONTROL). Dairy wastewater treatment (MUD) and dehydrated sewage sludge (BIOSOLIDS) were the fertilizers employed. BIOSOLIDS-I214 pellets had lower quality standards, so its combustion was omitted. A flue gas sample was sampled together with the particles emitted. The I-214 MUD sample had the highest emitted CO value (1505 mg/MJ). Regarding HCl emission factors, there was a homogeneity in the results linked with the Cl content present in the raw material. A higher particle emission was associated with pellets with higher ash content. Particles were composed mainly for elemental... [more]

A Portable Environmental Data-Monitoring System for Air Hazard Evaluation in Deep Underground Mines
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: deep underground min, gas hazards, Industry 4.0 in mining, IoT devices, smartphone
Air-quality measurements in a deep underground mine are a critical issue. The cost of ventilation, as well as the geometry of the considered mine, make this process very difficult, and local air quality may be a danger to miners. Thus, portable, personal devices are required to inform miners about gas hazards. There are available tools for that purpose; however, they do not allow the storage of data collected during a shift. Moreover, they do not allow the basic analysis of the acquired data cost-effectively. This paper aims to present a system using low-cost gas sensors and microcontrollers, and takes advantage of commonly used smartphones as a computing and visualization resource. Finally, we demonstrate monitoring system results from a test in an underground mine located in Poland.

Numerical Study on Novel Design for Compact Parallel-Flow Heat Exchanger with Manifolds to Improve Flow Characteristics
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: compact heat exchangers, Computational Fluid Dynamics, dividing manifold, flow uniformity, parallel flow, pressure drop
Parallel flow heat exchangers with manifolds are widely used in various industries owing to their compact size and ease of application. Research has been conducted to understand their flow characteristics and improve flow distribution and pressure drop performance; however, it is difficult to derive generalized improvements under different conditions for each application. This study proposes a novel design to improve the flow characteristics of a compact heat exchanger with a sudden expansion area of a dividing manifold and uses computational fluid dynamics simulation to verify it. The abrupt cross-sectional area change in the dividing manifold induces a jet flow near the entry region, which causes the flow maldistribution of the first few parallel tubes. To improve the efficiency of the dividing manifold, simple and novel designs with a converging-diverging area in the manifold header have been proposed. Parametric studies on the novel designs show improvements of up to 37.5% and 52.0... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: artificial neural network, GPS, navigation, operator training, precision agriculture
The article concerns the issue of automatic recognition of the moment of achieving the desired degree of training of an operator of devices used in precision agriculture. The aim of the research was to build a neural model that recognizes when an operator has acquired the skill of operating modern navigation on parallel strips used in precision agriculture. To conduct the test, a standard device to assist the operator in guiding the machine along given paths, eliminating overlaps, was selected. The thesis was proven that the moment of operator training (meaning driving along designated paths with an accuracy of up to eight centimeters) can be automatically recognized by a properly selected artificial neural network. This network was learned on the basis of data collected during the observation of the operator training process, using a criterion defined by experts. Efficiency Evaluation on the Influence of Washing Methods for Biodiesel Produced from High Free Fatty Acid Waste Vegetable Oils through Selected Quality Parameters
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, biofuel, misting, oil, purification, quality, washing
The increasing use of alternative energy sources has brought benefits like the recycling of waste vegetable oils (WVO) for biodiesel production; however, this practice presents challenges derived from a highly variable raw matter. Our research focused on the washing techniques usually employed by small to medium scale producers which may lack the infrastructure to perform high-grade purification and often relay on the employment of “artisanal” technology. We report biodiesel production from pure canola oil (C1) and a mix of soybean/canola oil (C2) as well as WVO from sample C2 with high free fatty acid content (2.7 FFA %) oil. We selected seven quality tests: pH determination, cloud, pour and flash point, acid number (AN), water/sediments and soap content considering the most commonly failed checkpoints in biodiesel production. From the use of four washing techniques, we determined that the sawdust filtration had the highest recovering yield with 89%. The majority of the washed biodies... [more]

Common Determinants of Credit Default Swap Premia in the North American Oil and Gas Industry. A Panel BMA Approach
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Bayesian model averaging, COVID-19, credit default swaps, credit risk, oil and gas sector, robust determinants
This study discovered market determinants of credit default swap (CDS) spreads in the North American oil and gas industry. Due to the limited theoretical background on market sources of CDS price fluctuations, we chose to alleviate model uncertainty and possible misspecification issues using Bayesian model averaging. This robust framework allowed us to aggregate results from a vast number of linear panel models estimated over the 2017−2020 period. We identified oil price volatility, major shifts in the OPEC+ supply policy, natural gas prices and industrial metal prices as the most robust determinants of CDS spreads. We show that following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, oil prices ceased to be a notably important determinant of credit risk, as factors indirectly related to oil prices, such as global and sectoral uncertainty, financial conditions and the macroeconomic stance became more influential. Additionally, we show that the CDS spreads of shale companies are determined by simi... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: electric power sector, post-crisis reconstruction, renewable energies, sustainable development
The electric power sector in countries suffering from crises and wars such as Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, etc., is among the most affected infrastructures. Since this sector plays a vital role in the economic growth and in improving people’s quality of life, the post-crisis reconstruction of this sector must take into account the requirements and concepts of sustainable development (SD) in addition to technical and economic considerations. This article discusses the role that renewable energy sources (RES) can play in achieving SD in the post-crisis reconstruction phase of the Syrian Electric Power Sector (SEPS) as a case study. Based on the available data, the study period was chosen from 2005 to 2017 and divided into two periods. In the first period (2005−2010), which is the pre-crisis period, the structure of the SEPS and its main characteristics were described while the adoption of RES solutions and SD concepts were investigated. Lattice and Tubular Steel Wind Turbine Towers. Comparative Structural Investigation
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: lattice structures, steel structures, towers, tubular towers, wind turbines
Renewable energy is expected to experience epic growth in the coming decade, which is reflected in the record new installations since 2010. Wind energy, in particular, has proved its leading role among sustainable energy production means, by the accelerating rise in total installed capacity and by its consistently increasing trend. Taking a closer look at the history of wind power development, it is obvious that it has always been a matter of engineering taller turbines with longer blades. An increase in the tower height means an increase in the material used, thereby, impacting the initial construction cost and the total energy consumed. In the present study, a numerical investigation is carried out in order to actively compare conventional cylindrical shell towers with lattice towers in terms of material use, robustness and environmental impact. Lattice structures are proved to be equivalently competitive to conventional cylindrical solutions since they can be designed to be robust e... [more]

Apparent Permeability Model for Gas Transport in Multiscale Shale Matrix Coupling Multiple Mechanisms
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: apparent gas permeability, irreducible water distribution, pore size distribution, porous deformation, shale matrix
Apparent gas permeability (AGP) is a significantly important parameter for productivity prediction and reservoir simulation. However, the influence of multiscale effect and irreducible water distribution on gas transport is neglected in most of the existing AGP models, which will overestimate gas transport capacity. Therefore, an AGP model coupling multiple mechanisms is established to investigate gas transport in multiscale shale matrix. First, AGP models of organic matrix (ORM) and inorganic matrix (IOM) have been developed respectively, and the AGP model for shale matrix is derived by coupling AGP models for two types of matrix. Multiple effects such as real gas effect, multiscale effect, porous deformation, irreducible water saturation and gas ab-/de-sorption are considered in the proposed model. Second, sensitive analysis indicates that pore size, pressure, porous deformation and irreducible water have significant impact on AGP. Finally, effective pore size distribution (PSD) and... [more]

One of the basic objectives of the European Union’s energy policy is to obtain and use energy in a sustainable way. Multiple-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods, in particular linear ordering based on the synthetic variable procedure, are used for comparative analyses of the level of energy sustainability. Despite many studies, the problem of choosing the optimal ordering method is still not fully resolved. This paper presents an original procedure that facilitates the selection of an effective method of the linear ordering of multi-feature objects for the evaluation of sustainable energy development of regions. What is understood as the effective ordering of regions is not only the effective ranking of objects but also their effective clustering. In order to obtain the best results of linear ordering, the authors put forward a multi-stage optimization of the selection of the method of ordering and normalization of diagnostic variables. Biochar for Vertical Greenery Systems
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biochar, DEA, effective solutions, vertical greenery systems
Vertical greenery systems (VGS) are effective at solving urban heat. They can absorb noise pollution and dust, and, aesthetically, they are positively perceived. Systems using hydroponic irrigation and nutrition, in combination with mineral wool as a base, are light and effective (they are able to hold water, with a high percentage of air, and a good mechanical structure to hold the plant stable). However, the functionality of a system can be compromised if the water supply is depleted or the irrigation system fails. This deficiency can be partially remedied if a certain amount of biochar or a suitable organic fertilizer is also a part of the system. The research task consisted of verifying this assumption and determining the effective amount of the biochar. Samples with different amounts of biochar were examined under the same temperature and humidity conditions; extended drying times, additional costs, and safety tank size savings were found. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: enhanced bee swarm optimization (EBSO), forecasting, least squares support vector machine (LSSVM), wind power, wind speed
This paper presents a short-term wind power forecasting model for the next day based on historical marine weather and corresponding wind power output data. Due the large amount of historical marine weather and wind power data, we divided the data into clusters using the data regression (DR) algorithm to get meaningful training data, so as to reduce the number of modeling data and improve the efficiency of computing. The regression model was constructed based on the principle of the least squares support vector machine (LSSVM). We carried out wind speed forecasting for one hour and one day and used the correlation between marine wind speed and the corresponding wind power regression model to realize an indirect wind power forecasting model. Proper parameter settings for LSSVM are important to ensure its efficiency and accuracy. In this paper, we used an enhanced bee swarm optimization (EBSO) to perform the parameter optimization for LSSVM, which not only improved the forecast model avai... [more]
