March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: failure prediction, failure prognosis, offshore wind, operation and maintenance planning, prescriptive maintenance
Offshore wind farms are a rapidly developing source of clean, low-carbon energy and as they continue to grow in scale and capacity, so does the requirement for their efficient and optimised operation and maintenance. Historically, approaches to maintenance have been purely reactive. However, there is a movement in offshore wind, and wider industry in general, towards more proactive, condition-based maintenance approaches which rely on operational data-driven decision making. This paper reviews the current efforts in proactive maintenance strategies, both predictive and prescriptive, of which the latter is an evolution of the former. Both use operational data to determine whether a turbine component will fail in order to provide sufficient warning to carry out necessary maintenance. Prescriptive strategies also provide optimised maintenance actions, incorporating predictions into a wider maintenance plan to address predicted failure modes. Beginning with a summary of common techniques u... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: city multi-floor manufacturing, Hungarian algorithm, production and distribution processes planning, simplified decision model, smart supply chain management
This study focuses on management ways within a city multi-floor manufacturing cluster (MFMC). The application of MFMC in megapolises is closely related to the problem of urban spatial development and the problem of matching transport and logistics services. The operation of the MFMC depends on the efficiency of production and transport management considering technical, economic, end environmental factors. Therefore, conditions affecting decision-making in the field of production planning by MFMCs and accompanying transports within the agglomeration area with the use of the production-service platform were presented. Assumptions were created for the decision model, allowing for the selection of partners within the MFMC to execute the production order. A simplified decision model using the Hungarian algorithm was proposed, which was verified with the use of test data. The model is universal for material flow analysis and is an assessments basis for smart sustainable supply chain decision... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: production planning, review, Sustainability, sustainability indicators, sustainability objectives, sustainable production planning
Sustainability has become of great interest in many fields, especially in production systems due to the continual increase in the scarcity of raw materials and environmental awareness. Recent literature has given significant attention to considering the three sustainability pillars (i.e., environmental, economic, and social sustainability) in solving production planning problems. Therefore, the present study conducts a review of the literature on sustainable production planning to analyze the relationships among different production planning problems (e.g., scheduling, lot sizing, aggregate planning, etc.) and the three sustainability pillars. In addition, we analyze the identified studies based on the indicators that define each pillar. The results show that the literature most frequently addresses production scheduling problems while it lacks studies on aggregate production planning problems that consider the sustainability pillars. In addition, there is a growing trend towards obtai... [more]

Juhani Rantaniemi, Jaakko Jääskeläinen, Jukka Lassila, Samuli Honkapuro
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy policies, optimal power production positioning, power system planning, synthetic network data
This paper presents a methodology for rapid generation of synthetic transmission networks and uses it to investigate how a transmission distance-based value loss affects the overall grid power flow. The networks are created with a graph theory-based method and compared to existing energy systems. The power production is located on these synthetic networks by solving a facility location optimization problem with variable distance-based value losses. Next, AC power flow is computed for a snapshot of each network using the Newton−Raphson method and the transmission grid power flow is analyzed. The presented method enables rapid analysis of several grid topologies and offers a way to compare the effects of production incentives and renewable energy policies in different network conditions.

The potential of solar energy encourages research into new applications of this technology. Access to renewable energy is an important element of modern urban policies aimed at sustainable development and the energy security of residents but also limits energy production from conventional sources due to the pollution associated with them. More and more often, projects of new urban infrastructure facilities include integrated photovoltaic panels. Assessing solar potential is an important step when planning the layout of solar panels, and the increasing number of high-rise buildings increases shaded areas, sometimes even for most of the day. Therefore, a detailed shading analysis can be important for city decision makers, investors and local communities. The results of the 3D spatial analysis presented in the article can be used to optimize the location and analyse the profitability of photovoltaic installations in a city. The aim of the project was to evaluate the effectiveness of photo... [more]

Ezequiel Junio Lima, Luiz Carlos Gomes Freitas
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed energy resources, distribution-system planning, electricity distribution, hosting capacity, power quality, solar energy, solar power integration
The main methods employed for Hosting Capacity (HC) calculations are basically classified into deterministic, stochastic and time series. In this scenario, the authors herein propose a hybrid methodology, which shows efficiency and ease of implementation. Besides the method presented, it is also calculated a hosting capacity of a real feeder which was modeled and analyzed taking into consideration variations in load and power injected by distributed generation sources. The proposed hybrid method deploys just one time series with the feeder power demand data, which are easily obtained from the feeder’s origin substation. Low voltage loads were modeled by the ratio between their maximum demands and the feeder maximum demand, making easier to start up the grid model implementation. Hence, the advantages of the proposed methodology can be summarized in: (a) easy to obtain the input parameters; (b) agility in implementing the study; (c) higher processing speed and (d) results consistent wit... Keywords: building energy management system, demand response, interruptible load program, OpenADR, temperature setpoint
The demand response (DR) program is one of the most promising components in the development of the Smart Grid. However, there are many challenges in practical operation to improve the existing and outdated system to comply with the DR programs. In Thailand, the major pain point of the office building owner in the DR program is the additional equipment, modification and operation cost of the existing equipment. Moreover, the sophisticated solution and control are other obstacles that need more measurements and data, and they make the operation difficult to work with. In this paper, we implemented a simple yet cost-effective hardware and software solution targeting an outdated air-conditioning system without voiding the warranty of the outdated equipment and without installing any additional measurements. In addition, the proposed operation is designed to be easy to operate under the equipment limitation and unskilled labor. More importantly, indoor temperature setpoint schedules during... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deepwater drilling, gas-lift dual gradient drilling, PVT behavior, standing correlations
Gas-lift dual gradient drilling (DGD) is a solution for the complex problems caused by narrow drilling windows in deepwater drilling. Investigations are lacking on using oil-based drilling fluid in DGD, which is the principal novel idea of the present study. This research compares the results obtained from two new models with those of Standing’s correlations for solubility and bubble point pressure. Nitrogen was selected as the injection gas, then the PVT behavior of drilling fluid (oil/water/Nitrogen) in gas-lift DGD was evaluated and compared by coding in MATLAB. Then, these results were used to calculate the bottom hole pressure and finally investigate the optimization of injected gas flow rate. According to the achieved results, the Standing model has some errors in evaluating the PVT behavior of “Nitrogen and oil-based drilling fluids” and is not recommended for the mixtures in the gas-lift DGD. Regarding optimizing gas flow rate, a discrepancy was observed between pressure values... [more]

In the present climate, due to the cost of investments, pollutants of fossil fuel, and global warming, it seems rational to accept numerous potential benefits of optimal generation expansion planning. Generation expansion planning by regarding these goals and providing the best plan for the future of the power plants reinforces the idea that plants are capable of generating electricity in environmentally friendly circumstances, particularly by reducing greenhouse gas production. This paper has applied a teaching−learning-based optimization algorithm to provide an optimal strategy for power plants and the proposed algorithm has been compared with other optimization methods. Then the game theory approach is implemented to make a competitive situation among power plants. A combined algorithm has been developed to reach the Nash equilibrium point. Moreover, the government role has been considered in order to reduce carbon emission and achieve the green earth policies. Three scenarios have... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydrothermal scheduling, river inflow, SDDP, time series model
The long-term hydrothermal scheduling (LTHS) problem seeks to obtain an operational policy that optimizes water resource management. The most employed strategy to obtain such a policy is stochastic dual dynamic programming (SDDP). The primary source of uncertainty in predominant hydropower systems is the reservoirs inflow, usually a linear time series model (TSM) based on the order-p periodic autoregressive [PAR(p)] model. Although the linear PAR(p) can represent the seasonality and autocorrelation of the inflow datasets, negative inflows may appear during SDDP iterations, leading to water balance infeasibilities in the LTHS problem. Different from other works, the focus of this paper is not avoiding negative inflows but instead dealing with the negative values that cause infeasibilities. Hence, three strategies are discussed: (i) inclusion of a slack variable penalized in the objective function, (ii) negative inflow truncation to zero, and (iii) optimal inflow truncation, among which... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand-side electricity price response, hybrid energy storage devices, microgrid model, optimal scheduling strategy
The power gap between supply and demand in the microgrid caused by the uncertainty of wind and solar output and users’ electricity consumption needs to be absorbed by the hybrid energy storage devices and the demand-side electricity price response. To maximize the service life of the lithium battery pack, this paper optimizes a reasonable ratio of the supercapacitor pack’s daily charge and discharge times to the daily cycle times of the lithium battery pack. The model construction includes two parts: power prediction and multi-objective optimization modeling. In the case study, a microgrid district under the Guizhou Power Grid is analyzed and discussed. Based on the predicted wind output, solar output, and load demand on a certain day, the optimal scheduling results have been obtained. On the one hand, a reasonable ratio regarding the daily charge and discharge times of hybrid energy storage devices has been obtained under the optimized parameter k in the model. Correspondingly, the da... [more]

Keywords: CO2 emissions, energy planning, flexibility, hydro-power, low-carbon, power system modeling, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, unit-commitment, VRES
The transition to a more environmentally friendly energy matrix by reducing fossil fuel usage has become one of the most important goals to control climate change. Variable renewable energy sources (VRES) are a central low-carbon alternative. Nevertheless, their variability and low predictability can negatively affect the operation of power systems. On this issue, energy-system-modeling tools have played a fundamental role. When exploring the behavior of the power system against different levels of VRES penetration through them, it is possible to determine certain operational and planning strategies to balance the variations, reduce the operational uncertainty, and increase the supply reliability. In many developing countries, the lack of such proper tools accounting for these effects hinders the deployment potential of VRES. This paper presents a particular energy system model focused on the case of Bolivia. The model manages a database gathered with the relevant parameters of the Bol... [more]

Keywords: bio-hub, biomass supply chain, biorefinery, forest depot, log sort yard, wood yard
The emerging bioeconomy requires new supply chain paradigms for biomass materials to reach processing centers. Forest bio-hubs can be thought of as networks of collection points to facilitate biomass supply chains that feed from forest to central processing facilities. The design and functionality of forest bio-hubs depends on the form (e.g., vertically and horizontally integrated), and the quality and volume of feedstocks. In this paper we conceptually develop the potential role of forest bio-hubs. We then compare current bio-hub development in three U.S. regions—the Pacific Northwest, the southwest region, and the southeastern U.S. We use a “SWOT” framework to compare strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for each region. We consider transportation distances, topography, proximity to markets, harvesting methods, and wood products development. Innovation and adaptability would play key roles in forest bio-hub development, especially with dynamic conditions related to marke... [more]

María Herrando, Antonio Gómez, Norberto Fueyo
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacity building, Energy Efficiency, public authorities, public buildings, renewable energy technologies
The support offered to local authorities in this work consisted of technical and economic training on the integration of energy efficiency measures as well as the development of tools (guidelines, a decision support tool, databases and a visualization platform) that allow local authorities to prepare their building renovation plans. These tools are found very useful for local authorities, particularly in the case of Teruel province, characterised by many small municipalities whose local governments do not have the technical staff to undertake this type of planning. As a result of this work, an energy action plan was elaborated for the implementation of 96 energy efficiency measures in public buildings of Teruel province. The execution of this plan would allow energy savings of 1.3 MWh/year and 245 tonsCO2e/year of CO2 emission reduction, involving an investment of EUR 1.2 M. The close collaboration with public authorities made it possible to assess the strengths and weaknesses of using... [more]

Keywords: integrated energy planning, near-zero carbon emission, near-zero carbon emission demonstration district, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, urban district planning methods
Reasonable regional integrated energy planning is an important prerequisite for the construction of a Near-Zero Carbon Emission Demonstration District (NCEDD). An integrated energy planning scheme that is based on a three-step planning method with the objective of achieving an NCEDD is proposed in this paper. First, the planning objectives should be determined. After that, the planning strategies should be established. Finally, the planning approaches should be proposed according to the previously determined objectives and strategies. A case study considering the integrated energy planning of the Meishan International Near-Zero Carbon Emission Demonstration District (MINCEDD) is investigated to explain the planning method. In addition, the planning results, which are indicated as indexes, are explained, analyzed, and compared to the ones of other districts. The indexes include a proportion of renewable energy to primary energy (73% by 2030 and 108% by 2050), a proportion of renewable p... [more]
Long-Term Hydrogen Storage—A Case Study Exploring Pathways and Investments

Keywords: Hydrogen, investment planning, long-term storage, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Future low-carbon systems with very high shares of variable renewable generation require complex models to optimise investments and operations, which must capture high degrees of sector coupling, contain high levels of operational and temporal detail, and when considering seasonal storage, be able to optimise both investments and operations over long durations. Standard energy system models often do not adequately address all these issues, which are of great importance when considering investments in emerging energy carriers such as Hydrogen. An advanced energy system model of the Irish power system is built in SpineOpt, which considers a number of future scenarios and explores different pathways to the wide-scale adoption of Hydrogen as a low-carbon energy carrier. The model contains a high degree of both temporal and operational detail, sector coupling, via Hydrogen, is captured and the optimisation of both investments in and operation of large-scale underground Hydrogen storage is d... Keywords: demand response, energy management system, load scheduling, peak shaving, renewable energy integration, smart grid
The power demand on the electric grid varies according to the time of the day following users’ needs and so does the cost of electricity supply because the electricity mix is formed using different generators of varying capacities. Demand response (DR) is the modification of the consumption load curve following a signal from the electricity provider; it is mostly used for peak clipping. By reducing the short-term mismatch between generation and consumption, it helps to integrate intermittent renewables and new low-carbon technologies such as energy storage, electric vehicles, and power-to-gas. The present work is a literature survey based on the following keywords: demand response, demand technology, potential, power, and power dispatch, which aims to provide a summary of the state of the art regarding the potential for demand response implementation. Literature is either related to potential assessment or to implementation; less focus is given on non-dispatchable DR than on dispatchab... [more]
EU R&D Funding for Electricity Grid Technologies and the Energy Transition: Centralised versus Decentralised Transition Pathways

Keywords: distribution grid, energy grid, energy system, energy transition, European framework programmes, transmission grid
In the acceleration phase transitions often increase in depth and scope, and thereby create knock-on effects for wider system structures. In the renewable energy transition, for example, higher shares of intermittent renewable energy sources call for new grid technologies to increase flexible grid operation. At the same time, there are different ways of achieving renewable energy transitions and providing flexibility. In Europe, important tensions exist over how centralised or decentralised a renewable energy electricity system should be. This paper explores to what extent and how European framework programmes for research and development have addressed and supported innovation in transmission grid (centralised system) and distribution grid (decentralised) technologies. We analyse European R&D projects that studied electricity grid planning, development and innovation over 2002−2020. We apply social network analysis of the collaboration partners in these projects, and analyse the calls... [more]
