A Reconfigurable Fault-Tolerant PV Inverter via Integrating HERIC and H5 Topologies
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: fault-tolerant, grid-tied PV system, open-and-short-circuit faults, PV inverter, reconfiguration
Solar energy is prevalent in many applications, therefore, the reliability of solar energy systems has become an important topic for research communities and industry. High reliability and fault-tolerant capability are particularly vital for the solar energy systems that are mission-critical and/or inaccessible to affordable maintenance. In order to enhance the reliability of a grid-tied PV system, a fault-tolerant Photovoltaic (PV) inverter, termed Integrated Fault-Tolerant PV Inverter (IFTPVI), is proposed in this paper. The IFTPVI is based on the Highly Efficient and Reliable Inverter Concept (HERIC) and H5 inverters that are both popular and commercialized transformerless inverters in grid-tied PV applications. The IFTPVI can tolerate both open-circuit (OC) and short-circuit (SC) faults while maintaining the same voltage and current levels. The system description, reliability analysis, simulation in Matlab/Simulink 2018, and experimental results are provided to verify the feasibili... [more]

A 3D Transient CFD Simulation of a Multi-Tubular Reactor for Power to Gas Applications
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: biogas upgrading, CO2 methanation, Computational Fluid Dynamics, multi-tubular reactor, power to gas
A 3D stationary CFD study was conducted in our previous work, resulting in a novel reactor design methodology oriented to upgrading biogas through CO2 methanation. To enhance our design methodology incorporating relevant power to gas operational conditions, a novel transient 3D CFD modelling methodology is employed to simulate the effect of relevant dynamic disruptions on the behaviour of a tubular fixed bed reactor for biogas upgrading. Unlike 1D/2D models, this contribution implements a full 3D shell cooled methanation reactor considering real-world operational conditions. The reactor’s behaviour was analysed considering the hot-spot temperature and the outlet CH4 mole fraction as the main performance parameters. The reactor start-up and shutdown times were estimated at 330 s and 130 s, respectively. As expected, inlet feed and temperature disruptions prompted “wrong-way” behaviours. A 30 s H2 feed interruption gave rise to a transient low-temperature hot spot, which dissipated after... [more]

Thermochemical Modeling of Metal Composition and Its Impact on the Molten Corium−Concrete Interaction: New Insights with Sensitivity Analysis
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ablation depth, corium temperature, melt/corium metal content, molten corium–concrete interaction, water injection
The characterization of molten corium−concrete interaction (MCCI) has increasingly become a cause of concern because, in the case of a severe nuclear accident, the core could meltdown and release radiation into the environment. The objective of this study was to determine the thermochemical impact of metal content in the corium and analyze the effect of corium metal content on ablation depth, corium temperature, its viscosity and surface heat flux, and production of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. The governing heat transfer equations were solved while considering the various thermochemical reactions in the existing numerical code in a comprehensive way. The developed MCCI model in CORQUENCH was validated against the data available in the literature. Our findings showed that the composition of corium, especially its metal content, has a noticeable effect on mitigating or aggravating the ablation depth and nuclear reactor integrity. We observed that during molten corium−c... [more]

Anti-Wind Experiments and Damage Prediction of Transmission Tower under Typhoon Conditions in Coastal Areas
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: anti-wind performance, coastal areas, tower collapse, tower-line coupled model, typhoon weather, wind field
Typhoons are a serious threat to transmission towers and lines in coastal areas. The anti-wind performance of a transmission tower needs to be reinforced and optimized to avoid tower collapse. Here, an improved real-time wind-field mathematical model and a tower-line coupled simulation model were established to reproduce the wind field distribution, mechanical vibration, and interaction between the wind field and tower. The damage prediction of the transmission tower was analyzed. Furthermore, an actual scaled tower-line model was built, which was used to measure the acceleration and displacement responses in the anti-wind experiments. The research results show that the improved model is feasible and correct based on the verification of Typhoon Mujigae. The tower’s vibration response is mainly characterized by low frequencies, whereas the lines indicate a high frequency response. The transmission line has a remarkable impact on tower vibrations in high turbulence. A flow direction angl... [more]

Research on Noise Suppression Technology of Marine Optical Fiber Towed Streamer Seismic Data Based on ResUNet
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: deep learning, marine optical fiber towed streamer seismic, noise suppression, residual block, ResUNet network, signal-to-noise ratio
Optical fiber seismic exploration technology has been widely used in marine oil and gas hydrate exploration due to its wide frequency band and high sensitivity. However, there are more types of noise in the collected data by optical fiber hydrophone than by a conventional piezoelectric seismic exploration system. Considering that the conventional denoising method is time-consuming, this paper proposes a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a ResUNet network based on deep learning to suppress the noises. ResUNet is improved on the basis of CNN; it is composed of a feature extraction part, a feature reconstruction part and a residual block. Both CNN and ResUNet networks achieved obvious denoising effects on optical fiber towed streamer seismic data and improved the signal-to-noise ratio of data effectively. The ResUNet network has better denoising effects than CNN, even better than conventional denoising methods. The ResUNet network can solve the problem of gradient disappearance cause... [more]

Effect of Climate on Residential Electricity Consumption: A Data-Driven Approach
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: climate, heating, Machine Learning, multicollinearity, residential electricity consumption, rural and urban difference, Tibet
Quantifying the climatic effect on residential electricity consumption (REC) can provide valuable insights for improving climate−energy damage functions. Our study quantifies the effect of climate on the REC in Tibet using machine learning algorithm models and model-agnostic interpretation tools of feature importance scores and partial dependence plots. Results show that the climate contributes about 16.46% to total Tibet REC while socioeconomic factors contribute about 83.55%. Precipitation (particularly snowfall) boosts electricity consumption during the cold season. The effect of the climate is stronger in urban Tibet (~25.06%) than rural Tibet (~14.79%), particularly in September when electricity-aided heating is considered optional, as higher incomes amplified the REC response to the climate. With urbanization and income growth, the climate is expected to contribute more to Tibet REC. Hence, precipitation should be incorporated in climate−REC functions for the social cost of carbo... Partitioning for “Common but Differentiated” Precise Air Pollution Governance: A Combined Machine Learning and Spatial Econometric Approach
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air pollution, air quality index, heterogeneity, recursive analysis, socioeconomic factors
Effective governance of air pollution requires precise identification of its influencing factors. Most existing studies attempt to identify the socioeconomic factors but lack consideration of multidimensional heterogeneous characteristics. This paper fills this long-ignored research gap by differentiating governance regions with regard to multidimensional heterogeneity characteristics. Decision tree recursive analysis combined with a spatial autoregressive model is used to identify governance factors in China. Empirical results show several interesting findings. First, geographic location, administrative level, economic zones and regional planning are the main heterogeneous features of accurate air pollution governance in Chinese cities. Second, significant influencing factors of air pollution in different delineated regions are identified, especially significant differences between coastal and non-coastal cities. Third, the trends of heterogeneity in urban air governance in China are... [more]

Simulation-Based Analysis of a Novel CO2 Ground Source Heat Pipe (GSHP) to Reduce Temperature Fluctuations in Pavements in Different Climatic Conditions
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: finite element, ground source heat pipes, pavement, temperature fluctuation
A fully wicked ground source heat pipe (GSHP) is numerically employed and simulated to transfer thermal energy from the subsurface to ground surface pavements to reduce the environmental temperature fluctuations in the pavement, thereby reducing thermal stresses and increasing pavement life. The GSHP can also reduce or eliminate snow and ice buildup on pavement surfaces. Each single GSHP was modeled in a two-dimensional axisymmetric cross-section using COMSOL software, which employs a finite element method. The modeled GSHP consisted of two parts: a disk shape buried below the pavement surface, connected to a cylindrical part embedded in a vertical underground borehole. The GSHP finite element model was validated against published experimental heat pipe data. The simulation results demonstrated that the thermal behavior of the heat pipe system during the cold season could reduce the temperature fluctuations on the pavement surface in six various climate zones. Design Optimization of Tubular Heat Exchangers for a Free-Piston Stirling Engine Based on Improved Quasi-Steady Flow Thermodynamic Model Predictions
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: design of experiments, free-piston Stirling engine, heat exchanger, improved quasi-steady flow model
This paper presents the design optimization of a heat exchanger for a free-piston Stirling engine (FPSE) through an improved quasi-steady flow (iQSF) model and a central composite design. To optimize the tubular hot heat exchanger (HHX) design, a design set of central composite designs for the design factors of the HHX was constructed and the brake power and efficiency were predicted through the iQSF model. The iQSF model is improved because it adds various heat and power losses based on the QSF model and applies a heat transfer model that simulates the oscillating flow condition of an actual Stirling engine. Based on experimental results from the RE-1000, an FPSE developed by Sunpower, the iQSF model significantly improves the prediction error of the indicated power from 66.9 to 24.9% compared to the existing QSF model. For design optimization of the HHX, the inner diameter and the number of tubes with the highest brake power and efficiency were determined using a regression model, an... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: discrete element method, drafting-kissing-tumbling, immersed boundary method, lattice Boltzmann method, sedimentation
Particle sedimentation is a fundamental process encountered in various industrial applications. In this study, we used immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann method and discrete element method (IBM-LBM-DEM) to investigate two-particle sedimentation. A lattice Boltzmann method was used to simulate fluid flow, a discrete element method was used to simulate particle dynamics, and an immersed boundary method was used to handle particle−fluid interactions. Via the IBM-LBM-DEM, the particles collision process in fluid or between rigid walls can be calculated to capture the information of particles and the flow field more efficiently and accurately. The numerical method was verified by simulating settling of a single three-dimensional particle. Then, the effects of Reynolds number (Re), initial distance, and initial angle of particles on two-particle sedimentation were characterized. A specific focus was to reproduce, analyze, and define the well-known phenomenon of drafting-kissing-tumbling (DK... [more]

Numerical Simulation and Economic Evaluation of Wellbore Self-Circulation for Heat Extraction Using Cluster Horizontal Wells
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cluster wells, economic evaluation, heat extraction capacity, wellbore self-circulation
The heat extraction capacity of the self-circulation wellbore is usually small because of the limited heat exchange area. In the paper, the cluster horizontal well group technology was proposed to enhance the heat extraction capacity and decrease the unit cost. Based on the mathematical model of heat transfer, a numerical simulation model of wellbore self-circulation for heat extraction using cluster horizontal wells was established to study the influence of main factors on heat extraction capacity. The economic analysis of heat extraction and power generation was carried out according to the model of the levelized cost of energy. The results show that the enhancement of heat extraction capacity is limited after the injection rate exceeds 432 m3/d (1.59 MW/well). The inflection point of the injection rate can be determined as the design basis for injection-production parameters. When the thermal conductivity of formation increases from 2 to 3.5 W/(m·K), the heat extraction rate will in... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: effectiveness, exchanger, heat pipe, Machine Learning
This paper details the selection of machine learning models for predicting the effectiveness of a heat pipe system in a concentric tube exchanger. Heat exchanger experiments with methanol as the working fluid were conducted. The value of the angle varied from 0° to 90°, values of temperature varied from 50 °C to 70 °C, and the flow rate varied from 40 to 120 litres per min. Multiple experiments were conducted at different combinations of the input parameters and the effectiveness was measured for each trial. Multiple machine learning algorithms were taken into consideration for prediction. Experimental data were divided into subsets and the performance of the machine learning model was analysed for each of the subsets. For the overall analysis, which included all the three parameters, the random forest algorithm returned the best results with a mean average error of 1.176 and root-mean-square-error of 1.542.

Mathematical Modeling of Transient Processes in the Susceptible Motion Transmission in a Ship Propulsion System Containing a Shaft Synchronous Generator
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: distributed parameter system, long elastic elements, mathematical modeling, motion transmission, shaft generator
Within the scope of the presented work, a mathematical model of a prototype of a complex motion transmission on a ship was developed. The abovementioned motion transmission includes long elastic elements with distributed mechanical parameters. The system, containing the motion transmission under consideration, is driven by an engine via epicyclic gearing. The torque is transmitted via a long drive shaft to a propeller working with a variable blade geometry. The rotor of a synchronous generator is mounted on the ship’s long drive shaft. This shaft generator produces electricity that is fed to the ship’s electrical network. With the use of the developed mathematical model, electromechanical transients occurring during the transmission of mechanical power are analyzed. A Galerkin Method for the Simulation of Laminar Boundary Layers on Heated Walls
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: finite volume method, Galerkin method, integral boundary layer method, thermal boundary layer, wedge flows
This paper presents a new solution method for the calculation of laminar thermal boundary layers. The method consists of a coupling between a modal method (Galerkin method) in the direction normal to the wall and a finite volume method in the direction(s) tangential to the wall. It is similar to an integral method in the sense that only a surface mesh is required and that the unknowns are integral quantities (corresponding to the moments up to a fixed order of the temperature profile in the direction normal to the wall). A specificity of the Galerkin method used is that the domain over which the integrals are computed has a variable size that is also an unknown of the problem. Using a series of numerical tests (representative of situations that can be encountered in aeronautics in the case of a wing equipped with a thermal ice protection system), we show that the new method allows us to predict the quantities of interest with a maximum error of a few percent, while a usual integral met... Two-Phase Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Modelling of Hydrodynamic-Aerodynamic and Wave-Structure Interaction
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: smoothed particle hydrodynamics, two-phase simulation, wave-structure interaction
A two-phase (air and water) smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is employed to study the hydrodynamic-aerodynamic and wave interaction with fixed and floating structures in a wave basin. The method is first verified for a classical two-phase dam-breaking. A mirror-open boundary is implemented at the top and left sides of a two-phase wave basin with a piston to generate a second-order regular wave. It is observed that, compared to the single-phase simulation, the two-phase one obtains a smoother water surface and prevents the non-physical water splash when interacting with the sloped dissipative beach. This wave basin is also used to investigate wave-structure problems such as wave interaction with a rigid cantilever beam fixed to the basin bottom and downstream of the wave-maker mechanism and the dynamics of a single floating box and two floating boxes in the waves. A typical wave-structure interaction period is captured and described using pressure contours and velocity vecto... [more]

An Efficient Method for Computing the Power Potential of Bypass Hydropower Installations
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, efficiency, micro-hydro, pico-hydro
Small-scale hydropower installations make possible a transition towards decentralized electrical power production with very low ecological footprint. However, the prediction of their power potential is difficult, because the incoming flow velocity and the inlet and outlet water heights are often outside of the control of the operator. This leads to a need for a method capable of calculating an installation’s power potential and efficiency rapidly, in order to cover for many possible load cases. In this article, the use of a previously-published theoretical framework is demonstrated with the case of a mid-scale hydropower device, a 26 m long water vortex power plant. It is shown that a simplified CFD simulation with a single output (the mass flow rate) is sufficient to obtain values for the two coefficients in the model. Once this is done, it becomes possible to evaluate the device’s real-life performance, benchmarking it against reference values anchored in physical principles. The met... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: advance pre-grouting, aluminum–plastic composite pipe, coal wall spalling, flexible reinforcement, large mining height working face, numerical simulation
A larger mining height leads to easy caving of the coal wall in the working face. The flexible reinforcement method during the mining period of the working face affects the normal mining of the working face, and the high strength of the traditional bolt/cable material affects the operation of the shearer drum, so it is necessary to seek a reinforcement material which does not affect the production and the drum coal cutting. This paper proposed a technical scheme of coal wall reinforcement by pre-grouting with a cuttable aluminum−plastic composite pipe which is easy to cut during mining in the working face, tested the mechanical properties of the “grouting + flexible pipe” specimen, and obtained the optimal support spacing by numerical simulation and carrying out an industrial test. The results show that the tensile strength of aluminum−plastic composite pipe is much higher than that of coal spalling and the elongation is much higher than that of the anchor rod.
