Modified Modelling for Heat Like Equations within Caputo Operator
Hassan Khan, Adnan Khan, Maysaa Al-Qurashi, Rasool Shah, Dumitru Baleanu
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Caputo operator, fractional-order heat equations, Iterative Laplace Transform method, Mittag–Leffler function
The present paper is related to the analytical solutions of some heat like equations, using a novel approach with Caputo operator. The work is carried out mainly with the use of an effective and straight procedure of the Iterative Laplace transform method. The proposed method provides the series form solution that has the desired rate of convergence towards the exact solution of the problems. It is observed that the suggested method provides closed-form solutions. The reliability of the method is confirmed with the help of some illustrative examples. The graphical representation has been made for both fractional and integer-order solutions. Numerical solutions that are in close contact with the exact solutions to the problems are investigated. Moreover, the sample implementation of the present method supports the importance of the method to solve other fractional-order problems in sciences and engineering.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), numerical study, Photovoltaic-Thermal (PVT), Separate Effect Test (SET)
Photovoltaic-Thermal (PVT) is a type of technology that generates electricity and heat simultaneously at the point of use. The generated electricity could be used on site or exported to the grid while the thermal output could be utilized for space and water heating. There is a lot of research for solar air heating with experiment or CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), but CFD has the disadvantage that it would indicate impractical results. In this paper, a numerical PVT baseline model was developed and validated with Separate Effect Test (SET) data to increase reliability. The numerical study was conducted by considering the effect of baffle lengths and baffle slopes on outlet temperature, total heat transfer and pressure drop inside PVT air module. An optimum PVT baffle length and slope design were suggested. The baseline numerical PVT model agreed well with the test data set as indicated by 1.25% error for inlet−outlet temperatures difference. The sensitivity study was conducted by c... [more]
CFD Study of Diffuse Ceiling Ventilation through Perforated Ceiling Panels
Alessandro Nocente, Tufan Arslan, Steinar Grynning, Francesco Goia
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ceiling panels, comfort, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Diffuse Ceiling Ventilation (DCV)
Diffuse Ceiling Ventilation (DCV) is a promising concept to address internal air quality and thermal comfort requirements in contemporary buildings. Sound-absorbing perforated ceiling panels are common in office rooms and can be used as air diffusers without modifications. The optimization of such systems is not a trivial procedure, and numerical simulation can represent an important tool to carry out this task. Today, most of the numerical studies on DCV are performed using porous medium models and focus on the general system performance rather than on the optimization of the diffuser design. In previous studies, a CFD model was used to optimize the size and distribution of the ceiling perforation. In the study presented in this paper, the results of simulations conducted on a full-scale three-dimensional domain and the performance comparison between a continuous and non-continuous perforation distribution are given. The results show that the non-continuous diffuser design does not di... [more]

Turki Alajmi, Patrick Phelan
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bottom-up models, building archetype simulation, diffusion rate, end-use forecasting, energy modeling, unit energy consumption
To meet the rapid-growing demand for electricity in Kuwait, utility planners need to be informed on the energy consumption to implement energy efficiency measures to manage sustainable load growth and avoid the high costs of increasing generation capacities. The first step of forecasting the future energy profile is to establish a baseline for Kuwait (i.e., a business-as-usual reference scenario where no energy efficiency incentives were given and the adoption of energy efficient equipment is purely market-driven). This paper presents an investigation of creating a baseline end-use energy profile until 2040 for the residential sector in Kuwait by using a bottom-up approach. The forecast consists of mainly two steps: (1) Forecasting the quantity of the residential energy-consuming equipment in the entire sector until 2040 where this paper used a stock-and-flow model that accounted for the income level, electrification, and urbanization rate to predict the quantify of the equipment over... Reducing Energy Requirements in the Production of Acrylic Acid: Simulation and Design of a Multitubular Reactor Train
Kiara Capreece Premlall, David Lokhat
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acrylic acid, multitubular reactor, Optimization, propylene oxidation
Acrylic acid, a versatile chemical intermediate, is typically manufactured via a two-step process involving the selective oxidation of propylene and acrolein. This work presents an optimized simulation on Aspen Plus® (AspenTech, Bedford, MA, USA) of the production of acrylic acid, with focus on the optimum design and operation of the reactor train, and modification for reduction in energy usage. In the propylene oxidation reactor, an inert pre-heating zone was designed to make use of the excess energy present in the exothermic process fluid and carried within the molten salt cooling fluid circuit. In the acrolein oxidation reactor, injection of cold air was used as a means to absorb the reaction heat. The optimization methodology employed aimed to minimize the total capital expenditure (i.e., equipment sizing) and operating costs (heat exchange network) for the required acrylic acid production and design constraints. The design constraints were based on the selected reaction kinetics a... [more]
Real-Time Reconstruction of Contaminant Dispersion from Sparse Sensor Observations with Gappy POD Method
Zheming Tong, Yue Li
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, contaminant distribution, gappy proper orthogonal decomposition, reconstruction, sparse sensor observations
Real-time estimation of three-dimensional field data for enclosed spaces is critical to HVAC control. This task is challenging, especially for large enclosed spaces with complex geometry, due to the nonuniform distribution and nonlinear variations of many environmental variables. Moreover, constructing and maintaining a network of sensors to fully cover the entire space is very costly, and insufficient sensor data might deteriorate system performance. Facing such a dilemma, gappy proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) offers a solution to provide three-dimensional field data with a limited number of sensor measurements. In this study, a gappy POD method for real-time reconstruction of contaminant distribution in an enclosed space is proposed by combining the POD method with a limited number of sensor measurements. To evaluate the gappy POD method, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is utilized to perform a numerical simulation to validate the effectiveness of the gappy POD metho... [more]
Validation of SAM Modeling of Concentrated Solar Power Plants
Alberto Boretti, Jamal Nayfeh, Wael Al-Kouz
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: concentrated solar power, Energy Storage, molten salt, solar energy
The paper proposes the validation of the latest System Advisor Model (SAM) vs. the experimental data for concentrated solar power energy facilities. Both parabolic trough, and solar tower, are considered, with and without thermal energy storage. The 250 MW parabolic trough facilities of Genesis, Mojave, and Solana, and the 110 MW solar tower facility of Crescent Dunes, all in the United States South-West, are modeled. The computed monthly average capacity factors for the average weather year are compared with the experimental data measured since the start of the operation of the facilities. While much higher sampling frequencies are needed for proper validation, as monthly averaging dramatically filters out differences between experiments and simulations, computational results are relatively close to measured values for the parabolic trough, and very far from for solar tower systems. The thermal energy storage is also introducing additional inaccuracies. It is concluded that the code n... [more]

Joost Veerman
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrodialysis, ion exchange membranes, membrane model, membrane resistance, resistance measurement, reverse electrodialysis
Ion exchange membranes are used in different fields of energy and separation technology such as electrodialysis, reverse electrodialysis, and fuel cells. Important aspects are permselectivity, resistance, and water transport. In this paper, we focus on the effect of the bulk NaCl concentration on the membrane resistance. Data from 36 publications containing 145 datasets using 6 different methods for measuring membrane resistance were compared. This study showed that the membrane resistance is dependent on the method of measuring. Two probable causes are identified: the application of reference electrodes and the presence of direct electrode−membrane contact. In addition, three physical and three phenomenological membrane models were tested by fitting these to the datasets. First, fits in the resistance domain were compared with fits in the conductivity domain. Resistance fits are sensitive to fluctuations in low concentrations, whereas fits in the conductivity domain are subject to non... [more]
Thermal Analysis of Power Rectifiers in Steady-State Conditions
Adrian Plesca, Lucian Mihet-Popa
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: mathematical model, power rectifier, temperature distribution, thermal modeling and simulation
Power rectifiers from electrical traction systems, but not only, can be irreversibly damaged if the temperature of the semiconductor junction reaches high values to determine thermal runaway and melting. The paper proposes a mathematical model to calculate the junction and the case temperature in power diodes used in bridge rectifiers, which supplies an inductive-resistive load. The new thermal model may be used to investigate the thermal behavior of the power diodes in steady-state regime for various values of the tightening torque, direct current through the diode, airflow speed and load parameters (resistance and inductance). The obtained computed values were compared with 3D thermal simulation results and experimental tests. The calculated values are aligned with the simulation results and experimental data.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3D modelling, BPS, building performance simulation, energy and buildings, energy simulation, higher education, learning, pedagogy, SOLO taxonomy, teaching, visual programming
Competence in performing Building Performance Simulations (BPS) is a fundamental asset for an energy specialist. However, teaching BPS to new students can be challenging, often due to the overwhelming capabilities of the software. The consequences for students are frustration and lack of confidence using the software, dividing group work based on previous expertise and, most importantly, the inability to predict and critically analyse results due to the superficial understanding of simulations. This paper presents and evaluates a simple method named ‘control method’ which is intended to introduce BPS in classes where students have a limited experience working with BPS, significantly different educational backgrounds, and where the time to teach BPS in class is limited. The method is built around the Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes taxonomy. It aims to provide the students with a basic understanding of the input-output relationship between parameters, prompting the use of BPS in... [more]

Keywords: Drift problem, MPPT algorithm, Proteus, PV Simulator
The real implementation of the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controllers for the photovoltaic (PV) systems is still a big challenge for researchers working in this field. Often, they use simulation tools to assess the performance of their MPPT algorithms before actual implementation. In this context, this paper aims to propose a trusted simulation of a PV system designed under Proteus software. The proposed PV simulator can be used to verify and evaluate the performance of MPPT algorithms with a closer approximation to the real implementation. The main advantage of this model that it contains a real microcontroller, as can be found in reality, so that same code for the MPPT algorithm used in the simulation will be used in real implementation. In contrast, when using (Powersim Software) PSIM or Matlab/Simulink, the code of the algorithm must be rewritten once the real experiment begins, because these tools don’t provide a microcontroller or an electronic board in which our algorit... Keywords: automated machine learning, Machine Learning, V2G, vehicle location prediction, vehicle-to-grid
Vehicle-to-grid services draw power or curtail demand from electric vehicles when they are connected to a compatible charging station. In this paper, we investigated automated machine learning for predicting when vehicles are likely to make such a connection. Using historical data collected from a vehicle tracking service, we assessed the technique’s ability to learn and predict when a fleet of 48 vehicles was parked close to charging stations and compared this with two moving average techniques. We found the ability of all three approaches to predict when individual vehicles could potentially connect to charging stations to be comparable, resulting in the same set of 30 vehicles identified as good candidates to participate in a vehicle-to-grid service. We concluded that this was due to the relatively small feature set and that machine learning techniques were likely to outperform averaging techniques for more complex feature sets. We also explored the ability of the approaches to pred... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building simulation, energy demand, Energy Efficiency, residential buildings, thermal comfort, thermochromic paints
This work addresses the effect of using thermochromic paints in residential buildings. Two different thermochromic paint types were considered: One that changes properties through a step transition at a certain temperature, and another that changes properties in a gradual/linear manner throughout a temperature range. The studied building was a two-floor villa, virtually simulated through a digital model with and without thermal insulation, and considering thermochromic paints applied both on external walls and on the roof. The performance assessment was done through the energy use for heating and cooling (in conditioned mode), as well as in terms of the indoor temperature (in free-floating mode). Three different cities/climates were considered: Porto, Madrid, and Abu Dhabi. Results showed that energy savings up to 50.6% could be reached if the building is operated in conditioned mode. Conversely, when operated in free-floating mode, optimally selected thermochromic paints enable reduct... [more]

Keywords: lignite extraction, numerical modeling, open-pit lignite mine, salt dome, stability analysis
The extraction of the Bełchatów lignite deposit located in the vicinity of the Dębina salt dome requires careful planning that considers the influence of mining projects on the slope and salt dome stability conditions. The instability problem is directly related to horizontal and vertical displacement, as well as the complex geological and mining conditions. These conditions are very unique with regard to the co-occurrence of the salt dome and lignite deposits in the same area, as well as the large scale of the pit wall slope. Thus, predicting rock mass behavior and ensuring the safety of mining operations are important issues. The presented analysis focused on the influence of long-term lignite extraction on the western pit wall slope of the Bełchatów field and the salt dome’s stability conditions. This study offers a comprehensive approach to a complex geotechnical problem defined by large-scale, complex geometry, and geological conditions. The rock mass behavior and stress condition... [more]

Keywords: bipolar charge transport model, cross-linked polyethylene, hetero charge formation, ionization, space charge measurement
Cross-linked polyethylene, commercially known as XLPE, is widely used as an insulating material in high voltage cables. However, space charge accumulation under the DC field is one of the most challenging problems in the further development of XLPE insulated cable. Due to the potential electrical degradation ageing process triggered by the accumulated space charges, the IEEE standard 1732 was established for measuring space charge in HVDC extruded cables as the qualification tests. Previous research has revealed that space charge originates from either charge injection at the electrodes or ionization of impurities presenting inside the bulk. In the light of this, this paper aims to simulate the accumulation of space charge in XLPE under DC stress. Space charge measurements have been carried on the fresh and degassed XLPE samples. A modified bipolar charge transport model, by considering the dissociation of impurities, has been employed to simulate the space charge behavior in XLPE. Com... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diversion cavity retrofit, gas-liquid two-phase flow, mixed transport pump, numerical simulation, optimization design
For the purpose of improving the transport capability of the mixed transport pump, a new self-made three-stage deep-sea multiphase pump was taken as the research object. Based on the Euler-Euler heterogeneous flow model, liquid (water) and gas (air) are used as the mixed media to study the external characteristics and internal flow identities of the mixed pump under different gas volume fraction (GVF) conditions. According to the simulation results, a local optimal design scheme of the diversion cavity in the dynamic and static connection section is proposed. The numerical results before and after the optimization are compared and analyzed to explore the effect of the diversion cavity optimization on the performance, blade load and internal flow identities of the pump. The results show that the head and efficiency are obviously improved when the inner wall of the diversion cavity is reduced by 4 mm along the radial direction. After optimization, under the condition of 10% gas content,... [more]

Keywords: forecasting, Machine Learning, uncertainty, weather forecasts, wind power
Weather variables are an important driver of power generation from renewable energy sources. However, accurately predicting such variables is a challenging task, which has a significant impact on the accuracy of the power generation forecasts. In this study, we explore the impact of imperfect weather forecasts on two classes of forecasting methods (statistical and machine learning) for the case of wind power generation. We perform a stress test analysis to measure the robustness of different methods on the imperfect weather input, focusing on both the point forecasts and the 95% prediction intervals. The results indicate that different methods should be considered according to the uncertainty characterizing the weather forecasts.

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, gurney flap, power augmentation, RBF, VAWT, wind turbine
The disclosing of new diffusion frontiers for wind energy, like deep-water offshore applications or installations in urban environments, is putting new focus on Darrieus vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs). To partially fill the efficiency gap of these turbines, aerodynamic developments are still needed. This work in particular focuses on the development of a mathematical model that allows predicting the possible performance improvements enabled in a VAWT by application of the Gurney flaps (GFs) as a function of the blade thickness, the rotor solidity and geometry of the Gurney flap itself. The performance of airfoil with GFs was evaluated by means of detailed simulations making use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The accuracy of the CFD model was assessed against the results of a dedicated experimental study. In the simulations, a dedicated method to simulate cycles of variation of the angle of attack similar to those taking place in a cycloidal motion (rather than purely sinus... [more]

Keywords: Energy performance, IDA ICE, Model simplifications, Residential building, Thermal and visual comfort
Accurate building physics performance analysis requires time-consuming, detailed modeling, and calculation time requirement. This paper evaluates the impact of model simplifications on thermal and visual comfort as well as energy performance. In the framework of dynamic zonal thermal simulation, a case study of a residential building in hot climate is investigated. A detailed model is created and simplified through four scenarios, by incrementally reducing the number of thermal zones from modeling every space as a separate zone to modeling the building as a single zone. The differences of total energy and comfort performance in the detailed and simplified models are analyzed to evaluate the grade of the simplifications’ accuracy. The results indicate that all simplification scenarios present a marginal average deviation in total energy demand and thermal comfort by less than 20%. Combining rooms with similar thermal features into a zone presents the optimal scenario, while the worst sc... [more]

Keywords: ground source heat pump, heat exchange rate, hydrogeological information, numerical simulation, response surface methodology, Surrogate Model
The installation potential of ground-source heat pump (GSHP) systems has been studied based on the spatial interpolation of numerical simulation results using ground heat exchanger (GHE) models. This study is the first to create an estimation formula for the heat exchange rate (HER) to obtain a solution equivalent to the numerical analysis results considering the average method when supplying three-dimensional (3D) hydrogeological information that affects the HER to a two-dimensional (2D) map. It was found that the main factors affecting the HER were groundwater flow velocity, subsurface temperature, and thermal conductivity. The response surface methodology was utilized to approximate the HER using the above-mentioned three parameters. The estimated HER showed very strong agreement with that calculated by the GHE models. The application of the estimation formula to the simulation of the 3D groundwater flow and heat transport model of the Sendai Plain (Japan) better reflects the hydrog... [more]
A Hybrid Time Integration Scheme for the Discontinuous Galerkin Discretizations of Convection-Dominated Problems
Liang Li, Songping Wu
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: discontinuous Galerkin, explicit scheme, implicit scheme, time integration, unsteady convection-dominated problem
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is a popular high-order accurate method for solving unsteady convection-dominated problems. After spatially discretizing the problem with the DG method, a time integration scheme is necessary for evolving the result. Owing to the stability-based restriction, the time step for an explicit scheme is limited by the smallest element size within the mesh, making the calculation inefficient. In this paper, a hybrid scheme comprising a three-stage, third-order accurate, and strong stability preserving Runge−Kutta (SSP-RK3) scheme and the three-stage, third-order accurate, L-stable, and diagonally implicit Runge−Kutta (LDIRK3) scheme is proposed. By dealing with the coarse and the refined elements with the explicit and implicit schemes, respectively, the time step for the hybrid scheme is free from the limitation of the smallest element size, making the simulation much more efficient. Numerical tests and comparison studies were made to show the performance of... [more]

Keywords: energy modelling, energy system architecture, heat decarbonisation
Energy models have been widely applied to the analysis of energy system decarbonisation to assess the options and costs of a transition to a low carbon supply. However, questions persist as to whether they are able to effectively represent and assess heat decarbonisation pathways for the buildings sector. A range of limitations have been identified, including a poor spatio-temporal resolution, limited representation of behaviour, and restricted representation of the full technical option set. This paper undertakes a review of existing energy models for heat decarbonisation in the UK, applying the novel perspective of energy system architecture (ESA). A set of ESA-related features are identified (including evolvability, flexibility, robustness, and feasibility), and models are reviewed against these features. The review finds that a range of models exist that have strengths across different features of ESA, suggesting that multiple modelling approaches are needed in order to adequately... [more]

Keywords: discrete element method, intrusion resistive force, mechanical performances, quartz sand, robot feet with typical structures
Four kinds of feet with typical structures, referred to as the hemispherical foot, the semicylindrical foot, the rectangular foot and the circular foot, respectively, were designed and manufactured to study the foot−terrain interaction mechanics for legged robots. Three kinds of quartz sand were selected to study how particle size, shape and compactness affected the physical properties of the substrate and the intrusion performance of mechanical feet. The media with smaller particle sizes had higher bulk densities and lower angles of stability, but no obvious rule was found for particle shapes of quartz sand with different sizes. The intrusion resistive forces and pressures of the hemispherical foot on these three kinds of quartz sand were all less compared with the other three mechanical feet. The particle disturbance areas and motion trends were compared under these four kinds of mechanical feet using discrete element method simulations. The intrusion resistive forces of these mechan... Keywords: eddy currents, hysteresis, magnetics modeling, saturable core, variable inductor
This paper proposes and develops a circuit-based model aiming to simulate variable magnetic power elements in power electronic converters. The derived model represents the magnetic element by a reluctance-based equivalent circuit. The model takes into consideration device core losses, with the main emphasis given to hysteresis losses, which are modeled using the Jiles-Atherton model. The core loss model is further validated on different ferromagnetic materials to prove its range of applicability. The winding losses of the magnetic device are also taken into consideration, which are obtained using Dowell empirical formulas. In addition, the frequency dependence of the device losses is also considered. The proposed modeling procedure has been applied to study and characterize a double E-core variable power inductor structure in a 1 kW SiC full bridge DC-DC converter. The procedure has been verified by comparing the simulation results to the experimental measurements, confirming the valid... [more]

Keywords: 10-switch converter, space vector, total harmonic distortion
Three-level converters have drawn extensive attention due to their ability to deliver high-quality power. High semiconductor count is the main drawback of three-level converters. As a solution to this, a 10-switch converter is presented, that has advantages over both two- and three-level converters, simultaneously, plus it is applicable to a variety of power ranges. However, the switching pattern of 10-switch converter is not as simple as standard three-level converter due to lack of medium vectors. This paper presents a novel space vector modulation (SVM) for a 10-switch converter to reduce total harmonic distortion (THD) and common mode voltage (CMV) of this converter in comparison to prior carrier-based modulation methods. A simplified, low-cost modulation algorithm for the converter is proposed. The designed switching sequence has aimed at a low output THD and enhancement of DC bus voltage utilization. The performance of the proposed SVM is then compared to upgraded sinusoidal PWM.... [more]
