Hubert Bialas, Ryszard Pawelek, Irena Wasiak
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: frequency control, modelling and simulation, voltage control, wind farm control
The article presents an original simulation model of a wind farm (WF) consisting of 30 wind turbine-generator units connected to the electrical power system (EPS) through power converters. The model is dedicated to the evaluation of the WF capabilities to participate in frequency and voltage regulation services in the power system. A system that allows for frequency and voltage control is proposed and implemented in the presented model. The system includes primary frequency regulation with synthetic inertia and secondary regulation available on request from the system operator. The concept of a reference power generation unit was introduced, according to which only one wind generator unit was modeled in detail, and the other units were replaced with simple current sources. Such a solution allowed for the reduction of size and complexity of the model as well as shortened the simulation time. Simulation tests were conducted in the PSCAD/EMTDC environment for an electrical power system co... [more]

Keywords: brushless motors, condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, frequency-domain analysis, goertzel algorithm, hall-effect devices, permanent magnet motors, piezoelectric transducers, variable speed drives, vibration analysis
A non-invasive technique for condition monitoring of brushless DC motor drives is proposed in this study for Hall-effect position sensor fault diagnosis. Position sensor faults affect rotor position feedback, resulting in faulty transitions, which in turn cause current fluctuations and mechanical oscillations, derating system performance and threatening life expectancy. The main concept of the proposed technique is to detect the faults using vibration signals, acquired by low-cost piezoelectric sensors. With this aim, the frequency spectrum of the piezoelectric sensor output signal is analyzed both under the healthy and faulty operating conditions to highlight the fault signature. Therefore, the second harmonic component of the vibration signal spectrum is evaluated as a reliable signature for the detection of misalignment faults, while the fourth harmonic component is investigated for the position sensor breakdown fault, considering both single and double sensor faults. As the fault s... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: equivalent circuit model, lithium-ion battery, Model Predictive Control
Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries play a substantial role in portable consumer electronics, electric vehicles and large power energy storage systems. For Li-ion batteries, developing an optimal charging algorithm that simultaneously takes rises in charging time and charging temperature into account is essential. In this paper, a model predictive control-based charging algorithm is proposed. This study uses the Thevenin equivalent circuit battery and transforms it into the state-space equation to develop the model predictive controller. The usage of such models in the battery optimal control context has an edge due to its low computational cost, enabling the realization of the proposed technique using a low-cost Digital Signal Processor (DSP). Compared with the widely employed constant current-constant voltage charging method, the proposed charging technique can improve the charging time and the average temperature by 3.25% and 0.76%, respectively.

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cybersecurity, determination, functional safety, risk cube, SIL, SIS, verification
This article addresses current problems of risk analysis and probabilistic modelling for functional safety management in the life cycle of safety-related systems. Two main stages in the lifecycle of these systems are distinguished, namely the design and operation. The risk analysis and probabilistic modelling differ in these stages in view of available knowledge and data. Due to the complexity and uncertainty involved, both qualitative and quantitative information can be useful in risk analysis and probabilistic modelling. Some methodological aspects of the functional safety assessment are outlined that include modelling of dependent failures or cybersecurity and verifying the safety integrity level (SIL) under uncertainty. It is illustrated how the assumptions in the process of risk analysis and probabilistic modelling influence results obtained and, therefore, potentially the decisions taken in functional safety management. Programmable control and safety systems play an important ro... [more]

Keywords: fault tolerance, Model Predictive Control, multilevel converters, power electronics
Fault-tolerance is critical in power electronics, especially in Uninterruptible Power Supplies, given their role in protecting critical loads. Hence, it is crucial to develop fault-tolerant techniques to improve the resilience of these systems. This paper proposes a non-redundant fault-tolerant double conversion uninterruptible power supply based on 3-level converters. The proposed solution can correct open-circuit faults in all semiconductors (IGBTs and diodes) of all converters of the system (including the DC-DC converter), ensuring full-rated post-fault operation. This technique leverages the versatility of Finite-Control-Set Model Predictive Control to implement highly specific fault correction. This type of control enables a conditional exclusion of the switching states affected by each fault, allowing the converter to avoid these states when the fault compromises their output but still use them in all other conditions. Three main types of corrective actions are used: predictive c... [more]

Keywords: closed-loop control, harmonic currents compensation, predictive control, shunt active power filter, stability analysis
This paper presents a shunt active power filter connected to the grid via an LCL coupling circuit with implemented closed-loop control. The proposed control system allows selective harmonic currents compensation up to the 50th harmonic with the utilization of a model-based predictive current controller. As the system is fully predictive, it provides high effectiveness of the harmonic reduction, which is proved by waveforms achieved in performed tests. On the other hand, the control system is prone to loss of stability. Therefore, the paper is focused on the stability analysis of the discussed control system with the additional outer control loop of the supply current with predictive control of this current. The conducted stability analysis encompasses the assessment of system stability as a function of the coupling circuit parameter identification accuracy, whose values are implemented in the current controller, as well as parameters such as the sampling frequency and proportional-inte... Keywords: fuzzy logic control (FLC), interior permanent magent synchronous motor (IPMSM), maximum torque per ampere (MTPA), model predictive current control (MPCC), model reference adaptive system (MRAS), self-sensing speed control
This paper presents a nonlinear cascaded control design that has been developed to (1) improve the self-sensing speed control performance of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive by reducing its speed and torque ripples and its phase current harmonic distortion and (2) attain the maximum torque while utilizing the minimum drive current. The nonlinear cascaded control system consists of two nonlinear controls for the speed and current control loop. A fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is employed for the outer speed control loop to regulate the rotor shaft speed. Model predictive current control (MPCC) is utilized for the inner current control loop to regulate the drive phase currents. The nonlinear equation for the dq reference current is derived to implement the maximum torque per armature (MTPA) control to achieve the maximum torque while using the minimum current values. The model reference adaptive system (MRAS) was employed for the speed self-sensing mechanism. Th... [more]

Keywords: automotive, efficient operation, fuel cell, Model Predictive Control, reference governor, safe operation, successive linearization
In this paper, a real-time capable reference governor superordinate model predictive controller (RG-MPC) is developed for fuel cell (FC) control suitable for automotive application. The RG-MPC provides reference trajectories for the subordinate proportional-integral (PI) controllers, which act directly on the FC system. Antiwindup and decoupling schemes, which are common problems in multivariable PI control, are unnecessary, given that the RG-MPC can inherently consider constraints and multivariable systems. The PI dynamics are incorporated into the prediction model used for control, ensuring the feasibility of the provided references for the PI controllers. The successive linearization technique is used in the RG-MPC to cope with the model’s nonlinear nature in real-time. The concept has been illustrated in a simulation scenario featuring efficient and safe power control of an FC stack in automotive application using real driving data obtained from an in-house-built FC vehicle. Keywords: braking strength, control strategy, energy recovery, hybrid electric vehicle
This paper proposes a double layered multi parameters braking energy recovery control strategy for Hybrid Electric Vehicle, which can combine the mechanical brake system with the motor brake system in the braking process to achieve higher energy utilization efficiency and at the same time ensure that the vehicle has sufficient braking performance and safety performance. The first layer of the control strategy proposed in this paper aims to improve the braking force distribution coefficient of the front axle. The Hydraulically Controlled Oscillating Piston Converter
Rudolf Scheidl
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: digital hydraulics, oscillating mass converter, switched inertance control
One way to realize inertia in energy saving hydraulic switching converters is a mechanical oscillator connected to a piston. Its two basic advantages over the use of fluid in an inductance pipe are higher compactness and a better decoupling of inductance and capacitance; these are opposed by a more complex valve system, which raises costs if electric control is applied. This paper presents and studies an oscillating mass converter with pure hydraulic control. It features a pressure control function and constitutes a step-up converter. A simple model is established to elucidate the basic properties of the function principle under idealized conditions. The complete system with the hydraulic control concept is studied by an elaborate dynamical model. It is shown that the converter is able to operate in the intended way under the conditions of the mathematical model. A potential application for a load sensing type meter out control of a cylinder drive is sketched.

Keywords: dynamic stability, renewables grid connection, small signal modelling, synchronous power controller, virtual damping, virtual inertia
Nowadays, modern power converters installed in renewable power plants can provide flexible electromechanical characteristics that rely on the developed control technologies such as Synchronous Power Controller (SPC). Since high renewable penetrated power grids result in a low-inertia system, this electromechanical characteristic provides support to the dynamic stability of active power and frequency in the power generation area. This goal can be achieved through the proper tuning of virtual electromechanical parameters that are embedded in the control layers of power converters. In this paper, a novel mathematical pattern and strategy have been proposed to adjust dynamic parameters in Renewable Static Synchronous Generators controlled by SPC (RSSG-SPC). A detailed dynamic modeling was obtained for a feasible design of virtual damping coefficient and virtual moment of inertia in the electrometrical control layer of RSSG-SPC’s power converters. Keywords: frequency containment control, hydropower plant, Lyapunov stability, MIT rule, model reference adaptive control, speed governor
With the growth in the share of variable renewable energy sources, fluctuations in the power generation caused by these types of power plants can diminish the stability and flexibility of the grid. These two can be enhanced by applying frequency containment using hydropower plants as an operational reserve. The frequency containment in hydropower plants is automatically controlled by speed governors within seconds. Disturbances such as fluctuations in the net head and aging may diminish the performance of the controllers of the speed governors. In this study, model reference adaptive control approaches based on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) rule and Lyapunov method were exploited in order to improve the performance of the speed governor for frequency containment control. The active power control with frequency control was enhanced by the aforementioned adaptive control methods. A mathematical model of a hydropower plant with a surge tank and medium penstock was constr... [more]

Keywords: adaptive control, demand response, HVAC, MPC, optimisation, smart energy
Heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems account for a large percentage of energy consumption in buildings. Implementation of efficient optimisation and control mechanisms has been identified as one crucial way to help reduce and shift HVAC systems’ energy consumption to both save economic costs and foster improved integration with renewables. This has led to the development of various control techniques, some of which have produced promising results. However, very few of these control mechanisms have fully considered important factors such as electricity time of use (TOU) price information, occupant thermal comfort, computational complexity, and nonlinear HVAC dynamics to design a demand response schema. In this paper, a novel two-stage integrated approach for such is proposed and evaluated. A model predictive control (MPC)-based optimiser for supervisory setpoint control is integrated with a digital parameter-adaptive controller for use in a demand response/demand ma... [more]

Keywords: multi-stack, segSRM, speed control, SRM converter, switched reluctance motor, torque ripple reduction
This paper presents a detailed literature review on switched reluctance motor (SRM) and drive systems in electric vehicle (EV) powertrains. SRMs have received increasing attention for EV applications owing to their reliable structure, fault tolerance ability and magnet free design. The main drawbacks of the SRM are torque ripple, low power density, low power factor and small extended speed range. Recent research shows that multi-stack conventional switched reluctance motors (MSCSRM) and multi-stack switched reluctance motors with a segmental rotor (MSSRM-SR) are promising alternative solutions to reduce torque ripples, increase torque density and increase power factor. Different winding configurations such as single-layer concentrated winding (SLC), single layer mutually coupled winding (SLMC), double layer concentrated winding (DLC), double layer mutually coupled winding (DLMC) and fully-pitched winding (FP) are introduced in the literature in recent years to increase average torque a... Keywords: medium-frequency AC collection system, MMC-HVDC integration, offshore wind farm, platform miniaturization
Offshore wind power has great development potential, for which the key factors are reliable and economical wind farms and integration systems. This paper proposes a medium-frequency wind farm and MMC-HVDC integration system. In the proposed scheme, the operating frequency of the offshore wind farm and its power collection system is increased from the conventional 50/60 Hz rate to the medium-frequency range, i.e., 100−400 Hz; the offshore wind power is transmitted to the onshore grid via the modular multilevel converter-based high-voltage direct current transmission (MMC-HVDC). First, this paper explains the principles of the proposed scheme in terms of the system topology and control strategy aspects. Then, the impacts of increasing the offshore system operating frequency on the main parameters of the offshore station are discussed. As the frequency increases, it is shown that the actual value of the electrical equipment, such as the transformers, the arm inductors, and the SM capacito... [more]

Yang Liu, Jin Zhao, Quan Yin
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: indirect rotor field-oriented control, induction machine drives, model-based prediction, rotor field-oriented angle error
In this paper, a model-based predictive rotor field-oriented angle compensation approach is proposed for induction machine drives. Indirect rotor field-oriented control is widely used in induction machine drives for its simple implementation and low cost. However, the accuracy of the rotor field-oriented angle is affected by variable parameters such as the rotor resistance and inductance. An inaccurate rotor field-oriented angle leads to a degradation of the torque and dynamic performance, especially in the high-speed flux-weakening region. Therefore, the d-axis and q-axis currents in the rotation reference frame are predicted based on the model and compared with the feedback current to correct the rotor field-oriented angle. To improve the stability and robustness, the proposed predictive algorithm is based on the storage current, voltage, and velocity data. The algorithm can be easily realized in real-time. Finally, the simulated and experimental results verify the algorithm’s effect... [more]

Keywords: learning-based methods, performance guarantees, state estimation, vehicle control
The paper proposes a novel framework for state observer design, in which learning-based observers are incorporated. The aim of the method is to provide a framework, which is able to guarantee the limitation of the observation error, even if the error of the learning-based observer under all scenarios cannot be verified. The framework is based on the robust H∞ design method, which is able to provide guarantees on the resulted observer. Moreover, the observer design process is extended with a controller design, which leads to a joint robust H∞ controller-observer design. The EU policymakers have adopted legislation to support communities taking responsibility for the energy transition. However, their development and integration are still in their early stages: many studies are performed without considering the overlapped social, economic, political, electrical, and information technology tasks simultaneously. This paper is the first to look at energy communities in their entirety, from the roles of the actors to the organisation, regulation, technical solution, and the market, to the use and business cases. The waterfall methodology was used throughout the work. The results show that energy communities can be viable by becoming reliable players so DSOs can better integrate the acquired flexibility and other services into their processes without compromising power supply. Their technical integration requires a coordinated operation and control of the entire power grid, including transmission and distribution, and the end-users, as proposed by the LINK h... [more]

Keywords: convolutional neural network, fault diagnosis, long short-term memory, nuclear power plant, sparrow search algorithm
Nuclear power is a type of clean and green energy; however, there is a risk of radioactive material leakage when accidents occur. When radioactive material leaks from nuclear power plants, it has a great impact on the environment and personnel safety. In order to enhance the safety of nuclear power plants and support the operator’s decisions under accidental circumstances, this paper proposes a fault diagnosis method for nuclear power plants based on the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) optimized by the CNN-LSTM network. Firstly, the convolutional neural network (CNN) was used to extract features from the data before they were then combined with the long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network to process time series data and form a CNN-LSTM model. Some of the parameters in the LSTM neural network need to be manually tuned based on experience, and the settings of these parameters have a great impact on the overall model results. Keywords: battery energy storage system, droop control, energy management system, microgrid, state of charge, voltage restorer
Microgrids have become an alternative for integrating distributed generation to supply energy to isolated communities, so their control and optimal management are important. This research designs and simulates the three levels of control of a DC microgrid operating in isolated mode and proposes an Energy Management System (EMS) based on Model Predictive Control (MPC), with real-time measurement feedback for optimal energy dispatch, which ensures power flow distribution and operation at minimum cost while extending the lifespan of the BESS. The EMS can react to disturbances produced in the lower control levels. The microgrid’s performance is analyzed and compared in two scenarios without EMS, and with EMS against changes in irradiation and changes in electricity demand. The fulfillment of the power balance is evaluated by analyzing the power delivered by each generation unit, the operating cost, and the state of charge of the battery (SOC).

Keywords: communication time delay, delay dependent stability, delay margin, grey wolf optimisation, two-area load–frequency control
In classical power systems, frequency measurements are transferred via a specialised communication channel, resulting in time delay. The time delay plays a major role in a power system, which can reduce the dynamic performance of the load−frequency control (LFC) system and can destabilise the system. The research to date has tended to focus on developing a new algorithm to determine the delay margin (DM) rather than looking into a hybrid algorithm which includes a nature-inspired metaheuristic optimisation technique. This paper introduces a novel method for computing the DM based on grey wolf optimisation (GWO), specifically for the constant time delay. In the proposed method, GWO is employed to optimise the minimum error of the spectral radius and to determine the best design variable of the crossing frequency. With the help of the proposed method, the sweeping range is no longer required, which improves the accuracy of the result. To evaluate the proposed method, a two-area network p... [more]
