Self-Correcting Virtual Current Sensor Based on the Modified Luenberger Observer for Fault-Tolerant Induction Motor Drive
Michal Adamczyk, Teresa Orlowska-Kowalska
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current sensorless, direct rotor flux-oriented control, fault-tolerant control, induction motor, Luenberger observer
Fault-tolerant control (FTC) solutions are increasingly being used in modern drive systems with AC motors. Such systems provide a higher degree of security and solutions that allow the on-line detection and localization of failures, as well as the switching of the control mode to a mode that allows us to continue the operation or safely stop the drive system. As the current sensors (CSs) are necessary to ensure precise control of the AC motors, in the event of their failure, one of two strategies can be used—hardware or software redundancy. The first strategy requires the use of additional measuring sensors. For this reason, the algorithmic solution, based on the Luenberger Observer (LO), has been proposed in this article as one of the software redundancy methods. In contrast to methods presented in the literature, the proposed solution allows one not only to compensate the stator current in a phase with a faulty CS, but also to adjust the correction of current estimation based on a me... March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: backstepping double-integral sliding mode control scheme, constant power load, exact feedback linearization approach, Lyapunov stability theory, negative-resistance characteristics, non-minimum phase, nonlinear dynamical model
This paper proposes a composite nonlinear controller combining backstepping and double-integral sliding mode controllers for DC−DC boost converter (DDBC) feeding by constant power loads (CPLs) to improve the DC-bus voltage stability under large disturbances in DC distribution systems. In this regard, an exact feedback linearization approach is first used to transform the nonlinear dynamical model into a simplified linear system with canonical form so that it becomes suitable for designing the proposed controller. Another important feature of applying the exact feedback linearization approach in this work is to utilize its capability to cancel nonlinearities appearing due to the incremental negative-impedance of CPLs and the non-minimum phase problem related to the DDBC. Second, the proposed backstepping double integral-sliding mode controller (BDI-SMC) is employed on the feedback linearized system to determine the control law. Afterwards, the Lyapunov stability theory is used to analyz... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decentralized control, multiphase converter, phase shedding
With a multiphase converter, the phase-shedding function dedicated to maximizing the power efficiency, in a manner that is dependent on the load current, is always provided by a centralized controller that induces a Single Point of Failure (SPOF). The objective of this study is to obtain a decentralized control approach to implement this function by removing any SPOF. The method consists of using identical local controllers, each associated with a converter phase, that communicate with each other in a daisy-chain structure. Instead of measuring the global output current to determine the optimal number of active phases required, each local controller measures its own leg current and takes a local decision based on threshold crossing management and inter-controller communications. Functional simulations are carried out on a 5-leg 12 V/1.2 V 60 W multiphase converter supplying a modern microcontroller. They demonstrate that the number of active phases is well adjusted, in a dynamic manner... [more]
Switched Optimal Control of a Heavy-Duty Hybrid Vehicle
Muataz Abotabik, Richard T. Meyer
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed optimal control, heavy-duty hybrid vehicle, power management, switched optimal control
This work investigates the fuel energy and emission reductions possible with the hybridization of a Class 8 tractor-trailer. The truck tractor has two drive axles: one powered by an internal-combustion-engine-based powertrain (CP) and the other powered by an electric powertrain (EP) consisting of an electric drive system supplied by a battery pack, resulting in a through-the-road hybrid. The EP has two modes of operation depending on the direction of power flow: motoring/battery discharging and generating/battery recharging. Switched optimal control is used to select between the two modes of EP operation, and a recently developed distributed switched optimal control is applied. The control is distributed between the CP, the EP, and the vehicle motion operation components. Control-oriented, component-specific power flow models are set forth to describe the dynamics and algebraic relationships. Four different tractor-trailers are simulated: the original CP and three hybrids with engine s... [more]
Proportional-Resonant Controller Structure with Finite Gain for Three-Phase Grid-Tied Converters
Marek Nowak, Tomasz Binkowski, Stanisław Piróg
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: controller, energy source, FPGA, inverter, proportional–resonant
The paper presents the study of a three-phase system coupling a DC power source to a power grid. This study, based on an FPGA, implements a real-time control system and digital models of the power circuit. The proposed proportional−resonant (P+R) controller with a modified structure was part of the system, which can be used as an alternative controller to traditional ones, e.g., in photovoltaic systems. Due to difficulties in implementing resonant controllers, a P+R with a new structure using a PI controller was elaborated. With an appropriate approach to the generation of phase current patterns, it is possible to set the reactive current and, thus, compensate for the reactive power. The operation of the system for typical operating conditions (e.g., system startup, change in preset load) was characterized and compared with a classical solution using a PI controller.

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: airport, power consumption, process management, security control, simulation modelling
The purpose of this paper was to develop a simulation model that allows simultaneous analysis of airport screening lane performance and power consumption per passenger served. These two issues have not yet been considered simultaneously in the scientific literature. So far, the focus has been placed on process performance. However, this paper shows, by performing an empirical study and applying the proposed model, that it is important to consider these two issues simultaneously. This will allow for the sustainable development of air transport. As a case study, three system configurations for single, dual and single fast screening lanes were analyzed. For each configuration, 3 different types of X-ray devices were checked, and the results were compared. The results showed that for example calculations with 2 million passengers handled per year, the gains could be as high as 4614 kWh/year. This article therefore shows that it is important to manage the process with power consumption in m... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: annular space, borehole cleaning, cementing, drilling fluids, mud cake, wash, wash contact time
The tightness of a borehole is essential for its long-term durability. For this purpose, the column of the pipe is sealed with cement slurry. After contacting the slurry, mud in the borehole is removed. However, the slurry does not effectively remove the remaining drilling mud. Therefore, the annular space is cleaned with a wash. Effectively cleaning the borehole presents quite a problem, as many variables that affect the stability of the borehole need to be considered. The time of contact between the borehole and the wash is very important. On the one hand, insufficient contact time does not guarantee proper removal of the mud. On the other hand, a long contact time may destroy the wall of the borehole. To address these problems, studies were carried out to assess the effect of the wash contact time on annular space cleaning. When determining the time of washing, a compromise between effective cleaning and the stability of the borehole wall is required. In the research presented in th... [more]

Keywords: frequency control, frequency response, inertia emulation, wind farm, wind power
Renewable sources of energy play a key role in the process of decarbonizing modern electric power systems. However, some renewable sources of energy operate in an intermittent, non-dispatchable way, which may affect the balance of the electrical grid. In this scenario, wind turbine generators must participate in the system frequency control to avoid jeopardizing the transmission and distribution systems. For that reason, additional control strategies are needed to ensure the frequency response of variable-speed wind turbines. This review article analyzes diverse control strategies at different levels which are aimed at contributing to power balancing and system frequency control, including energy storage systems.
A Power Control Method for Hybrid Electrical Accommodation Systems

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC sub-grids, FPGA-based digital control, hybrid electrical systems, hysteresis current control, parallel inverters, power accommodation
This paper presents a power control method for a hybrid electrical system, which enhances a conventional main AC grid by adding a DC sub-grid in parallel. In this system, each prosumer connects to the sub-grid via a couple of half-bridge inverters of a device called a power router. All of the power routers connected to the sub-grid are controlled such that they maintain the voltage of the sub-grid equally, which is an essential feature of peer-to-peer power accommodation without synchronization. This paper proposes an adaptive hysteresis current-control technique for controlling sub-grid-connected inverters that maintains the voltage of the sub-grid while accommodating a given power. The proposed control method also balances currents between positive and negative lines of the sub-grid simultaneously. The proposed control method is implemented on a high-speed FPGA-based digital controller and is evaluated on three prototypes of the power router. The experimental results show that the pr... [more]

Keywords: adaptive control, autonomous drifting, model predictive control (MPC), successive linearization, varying road surfaces, vehicle dynamics, vehicle motion control
Electronic vehicle dynamics systems are expected to evolve in the future as more and more automobile manufacturers mark fully automated vehicles as their main path of development. State-of-the-art electronic stability control programs aim to limit the vehicle motion within the stable region of the vehicle dynamics, thereby preventing drifting. On the contrary, in this paper, the authors suggest its use as an optimal cornering technique in emergency situations and on certain road conditions. Achieving the automated initiation and stabilization of vehicle drift motion (also known as powerslide) on varying road surfaces means a high level of controllability over the vehicle. This article proposes a novel approach to realize automated vehicle drifting in multiple operation points on different road surfaces. A three-state nonlinear vehicle and tire model was selected for control-oriented purposes. Model predictive control (MPC) was chosen with an online updating strategy to initiate and mai... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, multiband hysteresis control, multilevel inverter, Ziegler–Nichols method
In this paper, a twelve-band hysteresis control is applied to a recent thirteen-level asymmetrical inverter topology by employing a robust proportional-integral (PI) controller whose parameters are decided online by genetic algorithm (GA). The asymmetrical inverter topology can generate thirteen levels of output voltage incorporating only ten switches and exhibits boosting capability. A 12-band hysteresis current control strategy is applied to ensure the satisfactory operation of the inverter. It is designed to provide a sinusoidal line current at the unity power factor. The tuning of the PI controller is achieved by a nature inspired GA. Comparative analysis of the results obtained after application of the GA and the conventional Ziegler−Nichols method is also performed. The efficacy of the proposed control on WE topology is substantiated in the MATLAB Simulink environment and was further validated through experimental/real-time implementation using DSC TMS320F28379D and Typhoon HIL r... Keywords: control strategies, Energy Efficiency, metro system, p-v solar systems, transportation systems at educational institutions
It is broadly acknowledged that there is an urgent need to reduce carbon-based mobility systems and increase renewable energy alternatives. The automotive industry is one of the greatest consumers of energy in the world. It is fronted with many challenges that aim at reducing carbon emissions. Renewable energy costs are getting cheaper and more cost effective. However, well devised design and control strategies are also needed in order to optimize any systems that are adopted in this field. Previous research shows that the energy consumption for non-traction purposes may be of the same scale as the energy used to move rolling stock, and in some cases even larger. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is very interested in the implementation of policies that aim at reducing energy consumption and encouraging renewable energy programs. Under its Vision 2030 development program, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is looking to produce 30% of its energy from renewables and other sources, with solar energy... [more]

Keywords: Model Predictive Control, parameter estimation, power system, recursive least squares, synchronous generator, system stabilizer
In this paper, a model predictive controller based on a generator model for prediction purposes is proposed to replace a standard generator controller with a stabilizer of a power system. Such a local controller utilizes an input-output model of the system taking into consideration not only a generator voltage Ug but also an additional, auxiliary signal (e.g., α, Pg, or ωg). This additional piece of information allows for taking oscillations into account that occur in the system and minimizing their impact on the overall system performance. Parameters of models used by the controller are obtained on the basis of the introduced black-box models both for a turbine and a synchronous generator, parameters of which are estimated in an on line fashion using a RLS method. The aim of this paper is to compare the behavior of the classical generator control system with a power system stabilizer and a model predictive control with an additional feedback signal. The novelty of the paper is related... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural network (ANN), data analytics, deep learning, electric vehicles, fault diagnosis, long short-term memory (LSTM)
Diagnosing faults in electric vehicles (EVs) is a great challenge. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the detection of faults in an electromechanical conversion chain for conventional or autonomous EVs. The information and data coming from different sensors make it possible for EVs to recover a series of information including currents, voltages, speeds, and so on. This information is processed to detect any faults in the electromechanical conversion chain. The novelty of this study is to develop an architecture for a fault diagnosis model by means of the feature extraction technique. In this regard, the long short-term memory (LSTM) approach for the fault diagnosis is proposed. This approach has been tested for an EV prototype in practice, is superior in accuracy over other fault diagnosis techniques, and is based on machine learning. An EV in an urban context is modeled, and then the fault diagnosis approach is applied based on deep learning architectures. The EV and the faul... [more]

Keywords: active/reactive current injection, LVRT support, positive and negative sequence current control, suppression of DC-link voltages, symmetrical and asymmetrical faults, weak AC grid
In a grid, the choice of the point of common coupling (PCC) does not solely rely on the voltage level alone but also conjointly depends on the grid strength for many explicit purposes. Nowadays, the affinity of low SCR grid connections has become a crucial thought once it involves the integration of wind generation plants (WPPs). Since the quality of wind resources is a critical issue, these plants are usually placed in remote areas with a sophisticated potential of wind flow. These remote areas are typically less inhabited, where the grid does not perpetually always have to be sturdy. Moreover, the exceeded power demand loading and higher wind penetration affect the generation, transmission, and distribution utilities by permitting the flow of unbalanced voltages and currents in the power system. Therefore, the quality of transmitted power is becoming a crucial facet of distributed energy generation units. In this paper, a permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based wind energ... Keywords: core losses, electric machines, electromagnetic analysis, electromagnetic measurements, finite element analysis, flux-injecting probes, modular stator, oriented steel, rotor flux linkage
Oriented steel has higher permeability and lower losses in the direction of orientation (the rolling direction) than non-oriented steel. However, in the transverse direction, oriented steel typically has lower permeability and higher losses. The strategic use of oriented steel in a modular Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) stator can improve machine performance, particularly when compared to a machine designed with non-oriented steel, by increasing both torque and efficiency. Typically, steel manufacturers provide magnetic properties only in the rolling and transverse directions. Furthermore, in modern Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software, the magnetic properties between the rolling and transverse directions are interpolated using an intrinsic mathematical model. However, this interpolation method has proven to be inaccurate; to resolve this issue, an improved model was proposed in the literature. This model requires the magnetic properties of the oriented steel in between... [more]
The Development of Wind Farm Businesses and the Central Control of the Smart Grid in Spain: Making a Virtue of Necessity

Keywords: regulatory economics, smart grids, wind farms
This paper lays out the role of the first centre in the world for the integration into the electrical grid of electricity coming from renewable energy (the Spanish acronym for which is CECRE (Centro de Control de Energías Renovables; Control Centre for Renewable Energies)) and the industrial development of large energy suppliers and wind turbine manufacturers in Spain. These two initiatives enabled the development of one of the first integrated markets for this type of energy source. The key contributions were the development of two software programs (wind management and management of solar light incidence), their visual implementation, and centralized digital control. An economic and business history approach is used to show the rise and relative failure of the Spanish wind industry during the period 2004−2015, when Spain became the fourth country after China, the US, and Germany in terms of installed capacity of renewable energy and, in relative terms, the second country after Denmar... Standardized Reporting Needed to Improve Accuracy of Flaring Data
Gunnar W. Schade
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biased volumes, calibration, combustion efficiency, flaring, gas flaring, VIIRS
Gas flaring represents a large waste of a natural resource for energy production and is a significant source of greenhouses gases to the atmosphere. The World Bank estimates annual flared gas volumes of 150 billion cubic meters, based upon a conversion of remotely sensed radiant heat data from the NOAA’s VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) instrument onboard the polar-orbiting Suomi NPP satellite. However, the conversion of the remotely sensed radiant heat measurements into flared gas volumes currently depends on flare operator reported volumes, which can be biased in various ways due to inconsistent reporting requirements. Here, I discuss both known and unknown biases in the datasets, using them to illustrate the current lack of accuracy in the widely discussed flaring numbers. While volume trends over time could be derived directly from the radiant heat data, absolute amounts remain questionable. Standardizing how flared gas volumes are measured and reported could drama... Keywords: counterfactuals, decision support, interpretability, residential energy demand forecasting
Energy demand forecasting is practiced in several time frames; different explanatory variables are used in each case to serve different decision support mandates. For example, in the short, daily, term building level, forecasting may serve as a performance baseline. On the other end, we have long-term, policy-oriented forecasting exercises. TIMES (an acronym for The Integrated Markal Efom System) allows us to model supply and anticipated technology shifts over a long-term horizon, often extending as far away in time as 2100. Between these two time frames, we also have a mid-term forecasting time frame, that of a few years ahead. Investigations here are aimed at policy support, although in a more mid-term horizon, we address issues such as investment planning and pricing. In this paper, we develop and evaluate statistical and neural network approaches for this mid-term forecasting of final energy and electricity for the residential sector in six EU countries (Germany, the Netherlands, S... March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electro-hydrostatic actuator, four-quadrant operation, passive load-holding, pump-controlled cylinder, servomotor
Self-contained hydraulic cylinders have gained popularity in the recent years but have not been implemented for high power articulated hydraulic manipulators. This paper presents a novel concept for an electro-hydrostatic actuator applicable to large hydraulic manipulators. The actuator is designed and analyzed to comply with requirements such as load holding, overload handling, and differential flow compensation. The system is analyzed during four quadrant operation to investigate energy efficiency and regenerative capabilities. Numerical simulation is carried out using path control and 2DOF anti-swing of a hydraulic crane as a load case to illustrate a real world scenario. A comparison with traditional valve-controlled actuators is conducted, showing significantly improved efficiency and with similar dynamic response, as well as the possibility for regenerating energy.
A Method for Assessing the Stability of Digital Automatic Control Systems (ACS) with Discrete Elements. Hypothesis and Simulation Results

Keywords: automatic control system, discreteness, frequency response, PID controller, variable structure system with sliding processes
The article presents a new approach to the analysis of the stability of automatic systems with discrete links. In almost all modern automatic control systems (ACS), there are links that break signals in time. These are power controlled switches—transistors or thyristors operating in a pulsed mode and digital links in regulators. Time discretization significantly affects the stability of processes in the automatic control system. The theoretical analysis of such systems is rather complicated and requires a significant change in engineering approaches to analysis. With the improvement of digital controllers and a significant increase in their performance, this problem has practically been forgotten. However, its mathematical “content” has not changed since the 1980s when discreteness began to play a major role in hindering the transition to digital automatic control systems. In this paper, we propose a new approach that consists of interpreting the sampling operation by a link with the p... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: equivalent circuit model, fault diagnosis, fuel cell, support vector machine
The reliability and durability of the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells are vital factors restricting their applications. Therefore, establishing an online fault diagnosis system is of great significance. In this paper, a multi-stage fault diagnosis method for the PEM fuel cell is proposed. First, the tests of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under various fault conditions are conducted. Specifically, prone recoverable faults, such as flooding, membrane drying, and air starvation, are included, and different fault degrees from minor, moderate to severe, are covered. Based on this, an equivalent circuit model (ECM) is selected to fit impedance spectroscopy by the hybrid genetic particle swarm optimization algorithm, and then fault features are determined by the analysis of each model parameter under different fault conditions. Furthermore, a multi-stage fault diagnosis model is constructed with the support vector machine with the binary tree, in which fault features obtain... [more]

Keywords: three-phase inverter circuit, voltage phase angle jumping, voltage sag, voltage sag/swell generator (VSSG), voltage swell
The voltage ride through capability of the major auxiliary variable-frequency drive (VFD) in large thermal power plants is the key technical issue of power grid and source coordination. In order to test the high voltage ride through (HVRT) and low voltage ride through (LVRT) capability of the auxiliary VFD, it is necessary to develop a power supply to simulate different grid voltage sag and swell accurately. In this paper, a generator (VSSG) based on the common three-phase inverter circuit that can simulate multi-mode voltage sag/swell is proposed. The designed main circuit consisting of transformer, rectifier, DC split capacitors, three-phase inverter, and LC-filter can generate single-phase and three-phase voltage sag, swell, and phase angle jumping flexibly. The developed control strategies composed of the double closed-loop control and the neutral voltage balance control achieve accurate output, fast dynamic response, and step-less adjustment. Using published cross-sections and a series of geological constraints, a 3D geological model of an important area of the Adriatic sector of peninsular Italy—i.e., the Marche region—was developed. Then, an analytical procedure, taking into account the heat rising from the mantle and the radiogenic heat produced by the crust, was applied on the pre-built structural model, in order to obtain the 3D geothermal setting of the entire region. The results highlighted the key role played by the Moho geometry, particularly as a step of ~10 km occurs between the Adriatic Moho of the subducting plate to the west and the new Tyrrhenian Moho characterizing the back-arc area to the west. The comparison between our results and available borehole data suggests a good fit between the applied analytical methodology and published datasets.
