Keywords: decentralized control, emergency control, microgrid, power systems stability, recloser, small hydropower plants, synchronous coupler
Small-scale power generation based on renewable energy sources is gaining popularity in distribution grids, creating new challenges for power system control. At the same time, remote consumers with their own small-scale generation still have low reliability of power supply and poor power quality, due to the lack of proper technology for grid control when the main power supply is lost. Today, there is a global trend in the transition from a power supply with centralized control to a decentralized one, which has led to the Microgrid concept. A microgrid is an intelligent automated system that can reconfigure by itself, maintain the power balance, and distribute power flows. The main purpose of this paper is to study the method of control using reclosers in the Lahsh district of the Rasht grid in Tajikistan with distributed small generation. Based on modified reclosers, a method of decentralized synchronization and restoration of the grid normal operation after the loss of the main power... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, fault diagnosis, feature selection, Machine Learning, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells
The present paper is focused on proposing and implementing a methodology for robust and rapid diagnosis of PEM fuel cells’ faults using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Accordingly, EIS tests have been first conducted on four identical fresh PEM fuel cells along with an aged PEMFC at different current density levels and operating conditions. A label, which represents the presence of a type of fault (flooding or dehydration) or the regular operation, is then assigned to each test based on the expert knowledge employing the cell’s spectrum on the Nyquist plot. Since the time required to generate the spectrum should be minimized and considering the notable difference in the time needed for carrying out EIS tests at different frequency ranges, the frequencies have been categorized into four clusters (based on the corresponding order of magnitude: >1 kHz, >100 Hz, >10 Hz, >1 Hz). Next, for each frequency cluster and each specific current density, while utilizing a classificatio... [more]

Keywords: main controlling parameters, orthogonal experiment, peak strain, stepwise regression prediction, uniaxial compressive strength
Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and peak strain (PS) are essential indices for studying the mechanical properties of coal and rock masses, and they are closely related to mechanical parameters such as the elastic modulus (E), Poisson’s ratio (υ), cohesion (C) and internal friction angle (Φ) of coal and rock masses. This study took the No. 2-1 coal seam of Zhaogu No. 2 Mine, in Henan Province, China, as the research object. An RMT-150B servo testing machine was used to test all mechanical parameters, including the E, υ, C and Φ of coal and rock masses. Based on the principle of orthogonal testing, Three Dimensions Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC3D) was used to select E, υ, C, Φ, tensile strength (Rm) and dilation angle (Ψ) as initial participation factors. Using these six parameters and a five-level combination scheme (L25 (56)), the influence of coal mechanical parameters on UCS and PS was investigated, using the software SPSS for stepwise regression analysis, and a unia... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuzzy control system, nonlinear control system, SBR, wastewater treatment plant
The paper presents the complete design processes of novel aeration control systems in the SBR (sequencing batch reactor) wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Due to large energy expense and a high influence on biological processes, the aeration system plays a key role in WWTP operation. The paper considers the aeration system for a biological WWTP located in the northeast of Poland. This system consists of blowers, the main collector pipeline, three aeration lines with different diameters and lengths, and diffusers. Classical control systems applied for this type of installation are based on PID (proportional−integral−derivative) controllers, the settings of which are often found experimentally. The article presents the optimization of these settings and the design of an alternative control algorithm—the fuzzy controller.

Keywords: cement-based composites, cementitious grout, expanded graphite, ground source heat exchangers, hybridization, silanization, thermal conductivity
Recently, a growing demand for geothermal applications has led to the exploitation of energy efficiently by developing grouting materials in the borehole between pipes and the ground. Therefore, the current study developed newly formulated cementitious grouts by the integration of expanded graphite (EG)-based hybrid additives synthesized by building chemical bridges between silica particles and EG in the presence of amino functional silane coupling agents. These produced hybrid additives with controlled EG and silica ratios were utilized in grout mixtures used in borehole heat exchangers to enhance the thermal conductivity. According to the optimization study on the formulation development of grout mixtures with bentonite, silica sands, cement, and superplasticizer by adding neat EG and EG-based hybrids, the relationship between the carbon amount and water demand was found to have a significant impact on thermal conductivity. The highest thermal conductivity value of 2.656 W/mK was ach... [more]

Keywords: dc fault detection and discrimination in HVdc grids, HVdc dc side fault recovery, hybrid multi-terminal HVdc grids, LCC-VSC hybrid HVdc transmission systems
A selective fault clearing scheme is proposed for a hybrid voltage source converter (VSC)-line commutated converter (LCC) multi-terminal high voltage direct current (HVdc) transmission structure in which two small capacity VSC stations tap into the main transmission line of a high capacity LCC-HVdc link. The use of dc circuit breakers (dc CBs) on the branches connecting to VSCs at the tapping points is explored to minimize the impact of tapping on the reliability of the main LCC link. This arrangement allows clearing of temporary faults on the main LCC line as usual by force retardation of the LCC rectifier. The faults on the branches connecting to VSC stations can be cleared by blocking insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) and opening ac circuit breakers (ac CB), without affecting the main line’s performance. A local voltage and current measurement based fault discrimination scheme is developed to identify the faulted sections and pole(s), and trigger appropriate fault recovery... [more]

Keywords: centrifugal pump, Energy Efficiency, induction motor, line-start synchronous motor, synchronous reluctance motor, throttling control
The paper presents a comparative analysis of life-cycle energy consumption for three different types of 4 kW line-start motors used in a pump unit with throttling: the most widely used induction motor with IE3 efficiency class, line start permanent magnet synchronous motor with IE4 efficiency class and line start synchronous reluctance motor with IE4 efficiency class. The operating cycle for pump units with constant flow is considered for the above-mentioned types of motors taking into account not only the losses in the pump and motor, but also in the power supply cable. It is shown that the line start synchronous reluctance motor without magnets has the highest efficiency over the entire considered loading range. However, its power factor is lower than that of the synchronous motor with magnets and therefore it has more significant losses in power supply cable. Despite this disadvantage, the line-start reluctance motor is a good alternative to widespread induction motor since it allow... [more]

Non-invasive diagnostic methods for electric machines’ diagnostics, which can be used during their operation in a drive system, are needed in many branches of the production industry. For the reliable condition assessment of electric machines, especially those operating in drive systems, various tools and methods have been suggested. One diagnostic method that has not been fully recognized and documented is a diagnostic method based on zero-sequence voltage component (ZSV) applications for the condition assessment of induction machines. In this paper, the application of ZSV in induction machine diagnostics is proposed. A factor that speaks in favor of applying this signal in such diagnostics is the high sensitivity of the signal to damage occurrence, and the distinct change of extracted symptoms in the case of asymmetry. It is possible to obtain a high signal amplitude, which simplifies its processing and the elaboration of reliable diagnostic factors. This ZSV-based method is also abl... [more]

In industrial applications, among several varieties of semiconductor devices available, a silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) is often used in managing and protecting various systems with different applications. Hence, it is of the utmost importance to design a control system which can operate over a range of electrical loads without any modifications in its hardware and/or software. This paper analyzes and investigates in detail the power circuit effects on conduction delay and SCR functioning. Moreover, two different commonly used driving systems for SCR application have been introduced, discussed, and evaluated. Concerning driving systems, here, three aspects have paramount importance and are consequently taken into consideration, namely the driver system losses, the conduction delay, and in particular, some power quality indices. The conduction delay is a parameter of great importance, as being able to control and reduce it to the minimum allowed by the application can bring signifi... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condition-based maintenance, fault diagnosis, offshore wind turbine, support vector machine
A condition-based maintenance policy for offshore wind turbines is presented in consideration of the maintenance uncertainty and the weather effect. In this paper, the offshore wind turbine is divided into four main assemblies—namely, the rotor, gearbox, generator, and pitch system. The support vector machine classification technique is implemented to analyze the failure information, which was collected from field data in China. According to the results of fault diagnosis and prediction, the assembly that reaches the corresponding maintenance threshold will be repaired. At the same time, a maintenance opportunity occurs for the rest of the components, and an optimized plan can be determined by arranging the maintenance combination and time. The calculated results indicate that the proposed condition-based maintenance policy is beneficial to reduce the maintenance expenditure of offshore wind turbines.

Keywords: short-circuit impedance (SCI), sweep frequency impedance (SFI), transformer winding, winding resistance measurement
Power transformers are one of the most important devices in electrical networks. The safety operation of the transformers directly affects the reliability of the power system. To diagnose the internal deformation of the transformer as soon as possible is of great significance. As a new technique, sweep frequency impedance (SFI) method has been used to detect the short-circuit fault of the transformer winding. However, the SFI method is still in the early stage and more experimental tests are needed to further demonstrate its accuracy in the detection of other types of winding faults. Therefore, in this paper, the SFI method is investigated to diagnose an open-circuit fault of an onsite transformer. By deeply analyzing the SFI curves and SFI values at power frequency obtained by the SFI test, the open-circuit fault of this transformer winding is determined. Meanwhile, the accuracy of the diagnostic results based on the SFI method is validated by introducing the results of the short-circ... [more]

The high penetration of the Renewable Energy Sources and other emerging technologies likely to be installed in future power grids will pose new operational challenges to grid operators. One of the main issues expected to affect the operation of the power grid is the impact of inverter-based technologies to the power system inertia and, hence, to system stability. Consequently, the main challenge of the future grid is the evaluation of the frequency stability in the presence of inverter-based systems and how the aforementioned technology can support frequency stability without the help of the rotating masses of the traditional power grid systems. To assess the above problem, this paper proposes a methodology to evaluate the frequency stability in a projection of the real distribution grid in Cyprus with the time horizon to be the year 2030. The power grid under investigation is evaluated with and without the presence of smart hierarchical controllers for providing support to the power s... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Brazilian energy market, microgrids, mixed logical dynamic systems, Model Predictive Control
This paper proposes a microgrid central controller (MGCC) solution to the energy management problem of a renewable energy-based microgrid (MG). This MG is a case study from the Brazilian energy market context and, thus, has some operational particularities and rules to be obeyed. The MGCC development was based on a hybrid model predictive control (HMPC) strategy using the mixed logical dynamic (MLD) approach to deal with logical constraints within the HMPC structure, which results in a mixed integer programming (MIP) problem. The development of the solution is done through economic and dynamic modeling of the MG components; furthermore, it also takes into account the energy compensation rules of the Brazilian energy market and the white energy tariff. These conditions are specified through a set of MLD constraints. The effectiveness and performance of the proposed solution are evaluated through high-fidelity numerical simulation.

Keywords: electric machines design, fault diagnosis, finite element analysis, multi-phase motors, partial demagnetization faults, permanent magnet motors, synchronous reluctance motors
This paper analyzes partial demagnetization faults in a five-phase permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motor (fPMa-SynRM) incorporating ferrite permanent magnets (PMs). These faults are relevant because of the application of field weakening, or due to high operating temperatures or short circuit currents, the PMs can become irreversibly demagnetized, thus affecting the performance and safe operation of the machine. This paper proposes fault indicators to detect such fault modes with low demagnetization levels between 5.0% to 16.7% relative demagnetization. Four partial demagnetization fault detection methods are tested, which are based on the analysis of the harmonic content of the electromotive force (EMF) under no load conditions, the harmonic content of the line currents, the harmonic content of the zero-sequence voltage component (ZSVC) and the analysis of the power factor (PF). This work also compares the sensitivity and performance of the proposed detection methods.... [more]

Keywords: converter, frequency stability, synthetic inertia
The increasing amount of renewable energy sources in the electrical energy system leads to an increasing number of converter-based generators connected to the electrical power grid. Other than conventional power plants that are often connected to the grid via synchronous generators, converter-based generators do not provide mechanical inertia intrinsically. Therefore, ensuring frequency stability in the electrical power grid might become even more difficult in the future. With the concept of synthetic inertia, the converter-based generators partially imitate the behavior of conventional generators. By implementing such a concept in converters, they are capable of contributing to frequency stability as well. This paper compares two strategies to realize synthetic inertia by modeling converter-based generators in MATLAB/SIMULINK and simulating their behavior in a small Microgrid. The results prove that any kind of realization of synthetic inertia helps to improve frequency stability. Eac... [more]

Keywords: bidirectional converters, current-fed dual-active bridge, energy storage systems, PWM control
This paper proposes an asymmetrical pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategy for current-fed dual-active bridge (CFDAB) converters applied to energy storage systems (ESS). The ESS application considers low-voltage and high-capacity batteries, for low-power applications, such as data centers, residential photovoltaic systems (PV), and uninterruptable power supplies (UPS). The proposed modulation permits the use of an isolation transformer with negligible leakage inductance and, therefore, avoids the use of auxiliary circuits such as snubbers, active-clamp, or resonant cells. Hence, the converter implementation is simplified. The modulation also benefits the design of the control system because the converter can be modeled and controlled using simple strategies. A straightforward, large-signal model for the battery charge mode, which is valid over all the operation range of the converter, is obtained. Also, the converter operates with a fixed dc bus voltage on both charge and discharge mode... [more]

Keywords: deep belief network, distribution line, faults, microgrid, wavelet transform
Accurate fault classification and detection for the microgrid (MG) becomes a concern among the researchers from the state-of-art of fault diagnosis as it increases the chance to increase the transient response. The MG frequently experiences a number of shunt faults during the distribution of power from the generation end to user premises, which affects the system reliability, damages the load, and increases the fault line restoration cost. Therefore, a noise-immune and precise fault diagnosis model is required to perform the fast recovery of the unhealthy phases. This paper presents a review on the MG fault diagnosis techniques with their limitations and proposes a novel discrete-wavelet transform (DWT) based probabilistic generative model to explore the precise solution for fault diagnosis of MG. The proposed model is made of multiple layers with a restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM), which enables the model to make the probability reconstruction over its inputs. The individual RBM lay... Keywords: DFIG, FACTS, MIGRATE, power electronic converters, series compensation, SSCI, SSR, stability and control
The replacement of conventional generation by power electronics-based generation changes the dynamic characteristics of the power system. This results in, among other things, the increased susceptibility to subsynchronous oscillations (SSO). First, this paper discusses three recently emerging SSO phenomena, which arise due to the interactions between (1) a doubly-fed induction generator and a series compensated transmission system; (2) a voltage source converter (VSC) and a weak grid; and (3) nearby VSCs. A fundamental review of these phenomena resulted in the requirement for a reclassification of the existing SSO phenomena. This reclassification is proposed in this work and is based on interacting components identified using participation factor analysis for the distinct phenomena. Second, a critical review of the existing mitigation measures is performed for these phenomena, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of the solutions. The influence of the wind speed, grid strength... [more]

Keywords: buck, DC-DC, digital predictive control, discrete-time model
Switched mode power converters are nonlinear systems, and it is a constant challenge to improve their modeling accuracy and control performance. In this paper, a State Switched Discrete-time Model (SSDM) is proposed, which achieves a higher accuracy at a high frequency than that of conventional state averaged models. Instead of averaging the converter states for approximation, the states within each switching cycle are considered in the modeling. Based on total differential equations of switching-ON and switching-OFF durations, the inductor current and output voltage within a cycle are accurately calculated, which derives the SSDM. Furthermore, a Digital Predictive Voltage Programmed (DPVP) control strategy is derived through the SSDM. Through voltage prediction, a suitable duty ratio is calculated that regulates the output voltage to its reference value in the minimum switching cycles. In this way, the converter achieves a very fast load/line transient response and reference tracking... [more]

Keywords: Model Predictive Control, multilevel converters, power quality, uninterruptible power supplies
Nowadays, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) play an important role in feeding critical loads in the electric power systems such as data centers or large communication hubs. Due to the increasing power of these loads and frequent need for expansion or redundancy, UPS systems are frequently connected in parallel. However, when UPS systems are parallel-connected, two fundamental requirements must be verified: potential circulating currents between the systems must be eliminated and the load power must be distributed between the systems according to UPS systems availability. Moreover, a high-quality load voltage waveform must be permanently ensured. In this paper innovative control strategies are proposed for paralleled UPS systems based on Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC). The proposed strategies simultaneously provide: controlled load power distribution, circulating current suppression and a high-quality load voltage waveform. A new dynamic converters deactivation... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active power reserve, BESS, frequency regulation, inverter efficiency, PV system, smart grids, voltage regulation
The increasing presence of distributed generation (DG) in the electrical grid determines new challenges in grid operations, especially in terms of voltage and frequency regulation. Recently, several grid codes have required photovoltaic (PV) inverters to control their reactive power output in order to provide voltage regulation services, and the allocation of a certain amount of active power reserve for fast frequency response (FFR) service during under-frequency contingencies is needed. This requirement involves a significant waste of energy for PV systems, due to the necessity to constantly operate in de-loaded mode, under normal operating conditions. In addition, the variability of the irradiance can affect the correct amount of active power reserve that the system can provide in the moments after an under-frequency occurrence. The increasing number of battery energy storage systems (BESSs), coupled to PV systems, can be used to provide a worthy contribution to this frequency regula... [more]
