This study examines the energy intensity (EI), energy efficiency (EE), and economic growth, measured by the type of returns to scale (RTS), of 37 nations in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) from 2000 to 2019. We apply a non-parametric approach to estimate the three measures from their consumption of four primary energy sources, such as coal, gas, oil, and zero emission (e.g., renewable and nuclear power) as inputs and gross domestic product (GDP) as an output. In this study, we have the two types of efficiency measures over time: window-based and cross-sectional-based measures. Three findings are identified from our empirical study. First, the operationally efficient group, including France, Iceland, Japan, Switzerland, UK, and USA, presented a stable status of full efficiency in the window-based efficiency measure. Solar energy utilization for covering and offsetting the heating loads of buildings, is a sustainable way to reduce energy consumption (electricity, gas, etc.) for space heating. As such, a Trombe wall technology is a classic passive solar heating system used in buildings, that can be modified and applied to cold climate regions. This work presents a case study on a Trombe wall’s application in relation to its thermal energy output for space heating purposes at a factory building in central Latvia. The solar radiation and temperature measurements were carried out throughout the months of June to October. The results show that the examined wall has a monthly energy yield of 120 to 290 kWh, suggesting that Trombe wall systems are applicable as a secondary space heating source in cold climate regions such as northern Europe, however, a number of design and structural aspects have to be thoroughly considered.

Pumping systems, especially those used in the water supply sector and in industrial and hydroelectric facilities, are commonly infested by the golden mussel. This causes an increase in maintenance operations (e.g., system shutdowns for cleaning) that can generate an increased energy cost. The geographical expansion of the golden mussel in Latin America presents an economic risk, not only to the ecosystem in general, but also to the energy sector. The imminence of its spread in the Amazon region, one of the main river basins in South America, is cause for concern with regard to the problems that bioinvasion of this species can cause. This study was carried out to estimate the relevance of biological supplementation in improving the economic efficiency of anaerobic digestion (AD). Three kinds of silages—maize, grass, and igniscum—were initially inoculated with digestate and then supplemented with one of four vaccines containing different bacteria species (APD®, PPT®, JENOR®) or a yeast and mold mixture (HAP®). In addition, each plant silage was fermented without any additives (control A—maize silage, B—grass silage, and C—igniscum silage). The biodegradability process was performed in batch tests at a mesophilic temperature (38 °C). To compare the energetic efficiency of AD, the process kinetics, biogas, and methane production were analyzed. The aim of this study was to assess the energy consumption of production in selected branches of the food industry in Poland and to identify its changes after Poland’s accession to the EU. This issue is particularly important in the period of energy transformation and soaring energy prices. The novelty of this article is the determination of changes in the energy efficiency of various branches of the food industry. The main source of data was mass statistics data and unpublished data from the Central Statistical Office for 2004−2020. Descriptive statistics, comparative analysis, and strategic group mapping were used in the data analysis. This article investigates the impact of fiscal and financial incentives for energy efficiency labels on eco-friendly houses (houses with high energy efficiency certificates, such as A+, A, B, and B−) in 18 municipalities in the Lisbon metropolitan region during the period 2014−2020. The empirical results indicate that the variables of fiscal incentive policies for energy efficiency labels, income per capita, credit agreements for the purchase or construction of a house, and the number of completed dwellings in new constructions for family housing encourage eco-friendly houses. In contrast, the variable number of completed reconstructions per 100 completed new constructions has a negative impact. Maximization of Energy Efficiency by Synchronizing the Speed of Trains on a Moving Block System

The publication deals with the problem of the effect of interference with the movement of the “preceding” train on the movement of the “following” train in the case of efforts to reduce the distance between trains on a moving block interval. The paper presents results of the simulations for train of the ED250 type for a set of 135 traffic situations: for three contexts of reducing the speed of the “preceding” train, for five variants of the method of controlling the “following” train and for nine initial distances between these trains. The results confirmed the possibility of gaining time and energy benefits by implementing an appropriate method of controlling the “following” train, as well as providing insights into the area of shortening the gaps between trains, including the pursuit of synchronizing the speed of trains and possibly coupling them into a so-called virtual couples.

A new electrically driven gas booster is described as an alternative to the classical air-driven gas boosters known for their poor energetic efficiency. These boosters are used in small scale Hydrogen storage facilities and in refueling stations for Hydrogen vehicles. In such applications the overall energy count is of significance and must include the efficiency of the compression stage. The proposed system uses an electric motor instead of the pneumatic actuator and increases the total efficiency of the compression process. Two mechanical principles are studied for the transformation of the rotational motion of the motor to the linear displacement of the compressor pistons. Heterogeneous Effect of “Eco-Friendly” Dwellings on Transaction Prices in Real Estate Market in Portugal

The main objective of this research is to assess the impact of energy certificate ratings (EPCs) on the value per m2 of Portuguese housing sales. Data from 289 Portuguese municipalities between 2014 and 2019, analysed with a fixed effects panel and method of moments quantile regression, were used. EPCs with high energy efficiency ratings (e.g., A+, A, B, and B-) are used as a proxy for dwellings with “green” or “environmentally friendly” certificates. On the other hand, ratings with a low energy efficiency (e.g., C, D, E, and F) are used as a proxy for dwellings with “non-green” or “not environmentally friendly” certificates. The results support that EPCs associated with green housing increase the value per m2 of housing sales, and those associated with non-green housing decrease the sales value. In this paper, a first- and second-law analysis of vapor compression refrigeration is presented to estimate and propose the replacement of R134 with working fluids having less global warming potential (GWP) and less exergy destruction and irreversibilities. Six different refrigerants were studied, namely, R717, R1234yf, R290, R134a, R600a, and R152a. A thermodynamic model was designed on Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software, and performance parameters were calculated. Over the last few decades, energy efficiency has received increasing attention from the Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operation (AECO) industry. Digital Twins have the potential to advance the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) phase in different application fields. With the increasing industry interest, there is a need to review the current status of research developments in Digital Twins for building energy efficiency. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the applications of digital twins for building energy efficiency, analyze research trends and identify research gaps and potential future research directions. In this review, Sustainability and Energy and Buildings are among the most frequently cited sources of publications. Literature reviewed was classified into four different topics: topic 1. Optimization design; topic 2. Occupants’ comfort; topic 3. Building operation and maintenance; and topic 4. Energy consumption simulation.
Review of Energy Challenges and Horizons of Hydrogen City Buses

This paper discusses fuel cell electric vehicles and, more specifically, the challenges and development of hydrogen-fueled buses for people accessing this transportation in cities and urban environments. The study reveals the main innovations and challenges in the field of hydrogen bus deployment, and identifies the most common approaches and errors in this area by extracting and critically appraising data from sources important to the energy perspective. Three aspects of the development and horizons of fuel cell electric buses are reviewed, namely energy consumption, energy efficiency, and energy production. The first is associated with the need to ensure a useful and sustainable climate-neutral public transport. The quality of human nutrition has acquired significant improvements thanks to the opportunity to store food in suitable temperature conditions. Refrigeration has allowed the slowing of chemical and biological degradation and hence the waste of foodstuff, but at the same time increases energy consumption. These effects impact the environment and the sustainability performance of the cold chain, and drive consumers’ choices. The stakeholders of the chain are, therefore, constantly looking for improvement actions to reduce environmental impacts.
