March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: double-effect LiBr absorption chiller, exergetic, high-temperature PEMFC, industrial double-effect chiller, thermodynamic, thermoeconomic analyses, unit cost of chilled water
Thermodynamic, exergetic and thermoeconomic analyses were performed on two types of double-effect LiBr−water absorption refrigeration systems (ARS) for use with a 5-kW high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) as a heat source. Proper temperatures of the high-pressure generator, combined generator and condenser, condenser, absorber and evaporator were determined to meet the requirements of constant cooling demands for data center operations. The heat balance of the combined unit of generator and condenser in the industrial double-effect LiBr-water ARS is important for determining the flow rate of the primary vapor refrigerant from the high-pressure generator. The industrial double-effect ARS system, whose analysis has not been studied analytically, outperformed the series double-effect system and provided 6.5 kW of cooling capacity with a coefficient of performance of 0.99. The unit cost of chilled water estimated by the modified productive structure analysis (MOPS... [more]

Assessing the Operation System of Fire Alarm Systems for Detection Line and Circuit Devices with Various Damage Intensities
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: damage intensity, fire alarm system, recovery intensity, reliability, system model
The paper presents a method for assessing operation processes for Fire Alarm Systems (FAS) applied in civil structures, based on use analysis. Individual FAS devices include components with varying ‘lifetimes’ and damage intensities λ. This is because these elements are operated in different internal and external environments. Probability distributions with various damage λ and recovery µ intensity values must, hence, be taken into account for the FAS operation process and to determine the R(t) reliability. The life cycle of elements comprising a FAS can be divided into three distinguishing time periods. The first is the so-called ‘childhood’. The second, the longest, is characterized by damage intensity λ = const, and the third period is where FAS is unfit more frequently. Based on knowledge of actual FAS operation process data, it is possible to determine damage λ and recovery µ intensity parameters. Such data can be employed to determine FAS reliability parameters within the present... [more]

Benefits Achieved by Energy Suppliers through Cooperation with Individual Recipients and Their Readiness for This Cooperation
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: energy market, individual recipient, perceived benefits, readiness for cooperation, supplier
The aim of this article is to identify the benefits perceived by individual recipients that are achieved by consumer energy suppliers on the market, through multilateral trade cooperation, and to define the structure of these benefits according to the declared readiness of recipients to cooperate with the suppliers. The results of the analysis of the available literature on the subject indicate that there is a cognitive and research gap in relation to the perceived benefits achieved by the suppliers through joint marketing activities. The benefits are not being analyzed; especially from the perspective of individual recipients’ readiness for this cooperation. This gap is noticeable not only in relation to the energy market, but also in other areas of the consumer market. In an effort to reduce the identified gap, an online survey was conducted among 1196 adult individual energy recipients in Poland. The primary data collected was subjected to quantitative analysis using the following r... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: dynamic rotor interturn short circuit (DRISC), electromagnetic torque (EMT), harmonic component, magneto-motive force (MMF), synchronous generator
This paper analyzes the electromagnetic torque (EMT) fluctuation characteristics in synchronous generators under rotor interturn short-circuit (DRISC) fault. The novelty of this paper is that the DRISC fault is proposed based on the intermittent interturn short circuit existing in the actual operation and compared with the static rotor interturn short-circuit (SRISC) fault. In the work, by studying the influence of DRISC with different positions and different short-circuit degrees, the fluctuation characteristic of the EMT is analyzed and verified. The results show that when the DRISC5% fails, the location is in slot 3, the amplitude of first harmonic decreases by 7.2%, second harmonic amplitude increases by 33.4%, third harmonic decreases by 4.3%, and fourth harmonic increases by 26.8%. As the degree increased and positioned away from the large tooth of the DRISC, the overall EMT amplitude and reverse pulse increased, first and third harmonics decreased, and second and fourth harmonic... Improved Operation Strategy for the High Voltage Input Stage of a Multi-Port Smart Transformer
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: energy router, multi-port transformer, smart grids, smart transformer
Smart transformers are considered a crucial part of future smart grids as they will operate as the energy router and be able to control the power flows from and to the microgrids since they are placed in the border. A multi-port transformer can integrate different energy resources, loads and energy storage systems, optimizing the power flows between these elements. Combining both concepts, a multi-port smart transformer is obtained that is able to integrate efficiently distributed and renewable energy resources, electric vehicle chargers, prosumers and energy storage in both AC and DC microgrids. Nevertheless, the operation of these transformers, composed of several modules connected in series to the high-voltage grid is not easy, mainly due to the different power consumed or generated by each module. In this paper this issue is analyzed and different operation strategies for coordinating the series-connected modules at the input side are studied by simulation. The paper will expose ho... [more]

Flexibility Quantification and the Potential for Its Usage in the Case of Electric Bus Depots with Unidirectional Charging
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: centralized depot charging, charging management, electric buses, flexibility quantification, flexibility usage
One of the crucial steps for a successful integration of electric bus fleets into the existing electric power systems is the active and intelligent usage of their flexibility. This is important not only for reducing the eventual negative effects on the power grid but also for reducing energy and infrastructure costs. The first step in the optimal usage of flexibility is its quantification, which allows the maximum provision of flexibility without any negative effects for the fleet operation. This paper explores the available flexibility of large-scale electric bus fleets with a concept of centralized and unidirectional depot charging. An assessment of available positive and negative flexibility was conducted based on the data from two real bus depots in the city of Hamburg, Germany. The analysis shows the biggest flexibility potential was in the period from 16:00 h to 24:00 h, and the smallest one was in the periods from 08:00 h to 16:00 h, as well as from 02:00 h to 08:00 h. Multi-Stacked Superbuck Converter-Based Single-Switch Charger Integrating Cell Voltage Equalizer for Series-Connected Energy Storage Cells
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: charger, electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC), superbuck converter, voltage equalizer
Voltages of series-connected energy storage cells, such as electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and lithium-ion batteries, need to be equalized to ensure years of safe operation. However, to this end, a voltage equalizer is necessary in addition to a charger, increasing the system complexity and cost. This paper proposes a family of transformerless single-switch integrated chargers that merge a charger and equalizer into a single unit, achieving a simplified system and circuit. Proposed integrated chargers are derived by stacking multiple conventional pulse width modulation (PWM) converters, such as a superbuck converter, that contain two inductors and one energy transfer capacitor. Detailed operation analyses, including an investigation on the impact of component tolerance on voltage equalization performance, are also performed. Experimental charging tests using a 12-W prototype were performed for four EDLC cells. All cells were charged with eliminating voltage imbalance and demon... [more]

Effect of Operating Parameters on Efficiency of Swash-Plate Type Axial Piston Pump
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: axial piston pump, efficiency, hydromechanical, operation point, operation range, swash-plate, variable displacement, volumetric
In an effort to improve the energy economics of hydraulic systems, attention should be paid to reducing power losses in two main entities, energy converting components, and energy controlling and conveying components. Achieving the former requires utilizing components’ most energy efficient operating range. The energy converting efficiency of a pump, which is the primary energy converter in a hydraulic system, is determined by several operational factors. Of these, only pressure and rotational speed are normally considered, but also the fluid temperature and derived capacity with variable displacement pumps have a major effect on the efficiency. Omitting these factors may lead to running the pump outside its most efficient operation range and cause high energy losses. Operating the pump in its optimal region calls, however, for detailed knowledge of its performance characteristics, which are not generally made public by the pump manufacturers. This study presents the performance measur... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: gravity, microgravity monitoring, mining water disaster, water migration
Excessive water inflow in a mine poses a great threat to its operation, especially in the case of a salt mine. In 1992, a rapid outflow of water occurred in the Mina traverse in the Wieliczka Salt Mine, and a number of investigations were undertaken to assess the causes of the outflow and the condition of the rock mass, including the gravity and microgravity surveys discussed in this paper. The first of these was to investigate the rock mass with respect to its geological, hydrogeological properties and mining. The aim of study was to monitor the changes in the rock mass density and the impact of these changes on the subsidence of the ground surface. The surveys provided information on the geological structure of the study area and helped to identify possible routes for water migration. The first data confirmed density changes in the shallow parts of the rock mass, manifested by subsidence of the land surface. However, the subsequent measurements failed to show any significant density... [more]

Influence of Flexible Generation Mode on the Stability of Hydropower Generation System: Stability Assessment of Part-Load Operation
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: flexible operation, hydropower generation system, part-load condition, pressure fluctuation, shafting vibration
Utilizing the flexibility of hydropower to integrate more intermittent renewable energy into the power grid requires hydro units to expand the operating range; this duty, however, requires a continuous improvement of their stability during part-load conditions. This study focuses on the stability performance of hydropower generation systems (HGS) during flexible operation. First, a dynamic model of HGS that reflects the characteristics of part-load conditions is established by introducing pressure pulsation in the draft tube. Second, the model of HGS is coupled with a shafting system to investigate the vibration property of the unit. Then, the validity of the coupling model is verified by comparing it with a traditional model and actual data. Finally, some possible ways to mitigate the instability caused by part-load operation are explored. The results show that part-load operation of the system is accompanied by significant dynamic response fluctuations (5%). Moreover, the interaction... [more]

Carbon-Neutral Cellular Network Operation Based on Deep Reinforcement Learning
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: carbon neutrality, DDPG, reinforcement learning
With the exponential growth of traffic demand, ultra-dense networks have been proposed to cope with such demand. However, the increase of the network density causes more power use, and carbon neutrality becomes an important concept to decrease the emission and production of carbon. In cellular networks, emission and production can be directly related to power consumption. In this paper, we aim to achieve carbon neutrality, as well as maximize network capacity with given power constraints. We assume that base stations have their own renewable energy sources to generate power. For carbon neutrality, we control the power consumption for base stations by adjusting the transmission power and switching off base stations to balance the generated power. Given such power constraints, our goal is to maximize the network capacity or the rate achievable for the users. To this end, we carefully design the objective function and then propose an efficient Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) alg... [more]

Two-Stage Chance-Constrained Coordinated Operation of an Integrated Gas−Electric System
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: chance constraint, integrated gas–electric systems, MILP, penetration, Taylor series expansion, two-stage
Under the background that the high penetration of renewable energy generation, which mainly consists of wind power, will have a significant impact on electric power systems due to the volatility and uncertainty of renewable energy, energy systems with gas−electric coupling and interconnections have been widely studied to accommodate renewable energy generation. This paper proposes a two-stage chance-constrained coordinated operation model of an integrated gas−electric system and fully considers the uncertainty and high penetration of wind power. The Taylor series expansion method is used to linearize the Weymouth gas flow equation of a natural gas system and finally obtains a mixed integer linear programming model. Case studies show the effectiveness of the integrated energy system for peak shaving, valley filling, and promoting wind power accommodation. The proposed model ensures the consumption of wind power generation and also reduces the operation cost by about 0.7%.

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: AC/DC hybrid power grid, evaluation indicator, strengthening measure, trade-off of technology and cost, weighting method
Due to the complex operation characteristics of AC/DC hybrid power grids, it is a great challenge to comprehensively evaluate their stability and formulate appropriate strengthening schemes for them. To address this challenge, the following studies are carried out in this paper. First, an evaluation system including six indicators is established for AC/DC hybrid power grids. Next, aiming at the problems that may be revealed by the comprehensive evaluation, strengthening measures that can be utilized are introduced. Operation of the Electronic Current Transformer for Transformation of Distorted Current Higher Harmonics
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: current transducer, distorted current, electronic current transformer, Hall effect, higher harmonics
This paper evaluates an electronic current transformer’s wideband accuracy in the transformation of distorted current harmonics. The tests were performed in the range of frequencies from 50 Hz to 5 kHz. The utmost importance was dedicated to the transformation of the low-order higher harmonics. The novelty of this paper involves the analysis of the self-generation of the third and fifth higher harmonics caused by the nonlinearity of magnetic core magnetization characteristics. Therefore, what is considered new in this investigation is that this phenomenon has a significant influence on values of current errors and phase displacements despite the presence of the operational amplifiers and the Hall sensors in the output circuits. Another important factor to consider is the influence of the RMS value of the primary current and output load of the ECT on wideband accuracy. To show the backgrounds of the performed laboratory studies, we also discuss the operation principles of the ECTs with... [more]

Improving the Efficiency of Curved Wells’ Operation by Means of Progressive Cavity Pumps
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: centralizer, directional wellbore profile, progressive cavity pump, reduced disc, sucker-rod string
This paper proposes a solution to the problem of improving the reliability of the operation of progressive cavity pump units in deviated and directional wells. High dogleg severity significantly contributes to rod breakage; rods often break close to the “elbows” with a dogleg severity of 2 deg/10 m or higher. Statistical analyses were used to identify the frequency of failures and their impact on the reliability of a PCP unit. The design layout and mathematical model for pump rods’ torsional vibrations in the curved section of a wellbore were developed. A simulation of the curved section was performed. This article provides the basic formulas needed to design a rotating rod string using two reduced discs. The creation of an additional crooked section resulted in multiple reductions in the “resonant” rotational speed and rigidity in the mathematical model. Determining the moment of inertia of the reduced discs’ mass made it possible to determine the sucker-rod string’s stiffness, the ci... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: capacity configuration, optimal operation, PV-hydrogen system, zero carbon emission microgrid
Aiming to meet the low-carbon demands of power generation in the process of carbon peaking and carbon neutralization, this paper proposes an optimal PV-hydrogen zero carbon emission microgrid. Multi-Level Dependent-Chance Model for Hydropower Reservoir Operations
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: hydropower, multi-level dependent-chance model, operation, SDP
Some hydropower reservoirs are operated under different constraint levels. For these reservoirs, a multi-level (ML) dependent-chance (DC) model is established. In the model, only when the higher-level constraints are satisfied are the lower-level constraints or system benefits considered. The multi-level dependent-chance (MLDC) model is specified by two models. One is based on existing reliability-constrained (RC) dynamic programming (DP), in which the soft constraints are addressed using reliability constraints of 1, and the priorities are reflected using the order of magnitudes of Lagrange multipliers. The other is the explicit dependent-chance reasoning in the DP recursive function, in which each soft constraint is represented as an objective function of negative expected failure time and the optimum is the solution with a larger value for all higher-level objective functions. The proposed models are applied to derive long-term operation rules for the hydropower system on the middle... [more]

Automating Component-Level Stress Measurements for Inverter Reliability Estimation
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: component degradation, grid-support functions, inverter reliability, lifetime, stress
In the near future, grid operators are expected to regularly use advanced distributed energy resource (DER) functions, defined in IEEE 1547-2018, to perform a range of grid-support operations. Many of these functions adjust the active and reactive power of the device through commanded or autonomous operating modes which induce new stresses on the power electronics components. In this work, an experimental and theoretical framework is introduced which couples laboratory-measured component stress with advanced inverter functionality and derives a reduction in useful lifetime based on an applicable reliability model. Multiple DER devices were instrumented to calculate the additional component stress under multiple reactive power setpoints to estimate associated DER lifetime reductions. A clear increase in switch loss was demonstrated as a function of irradiance level and power factor. This is replicated in the system-level efficiency measurements, although magnitudes were different—sugges... [more]

Economic Analysis of Heat Distribution Concepts for a Small Solar District Heating System
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: 4GDH, district heat, GRUDIS, hot water circulation, Solar Thermal, TRNSYS
One challenge in today’s district heating systems is the relatively high distribution heat loss. Lowering distribution temperatures is one way to reduce operational costs resulting from high heat losses, while changing the distribution system from steel pipes to plastic pipes and changing the heat distribution concept can reduce investment costs. The result is that the overall life cycle cost of the district heating system is reduced, leading to the improved cost competitiveness of district heating versus individual heating options. The main aim of this study was to determine the most cost-efficient distribution system for a theoretical solar district heating system, by comparing the marginal life cycle cost of two different distribution systems. A secondary aim was to determine the influence of the employed pipe type and insulation level on the marginal life cycle cost by comparing detailed economic calculations, including differences in pipe installation costs and construction costs,... Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: prepack sand retention tests, sand production, sanding process, solids production, weakly consolidated reservoir, wire wrapped screen
This paper considers a field with high-viscosity oil in a terrigenous weakly consolidated reservoir (sandstone) with a massive gas cap and an aquifer. The major challenge in the field operation is the migration of solid sand particles into the well, accompanied by a breakthrough of water and/or gas.
