Keywords: battery energy storage systems, district level, energy community, energy management, Model Predictive Control, Optimization, vertical photovoltaics
This paper introduces a Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy for the optimal energy management of a district whose buildings are equipped with vertically placed Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) systems and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The vertically placed BIPV systems are able to cover larger areas of buildings’ surfaces, as compared with conventional rooftop PV systems, and reach their peak of production during winter and spring, which renders them suitable for energy harvesting especially in urban areas. Driven by both these relative advantages, the proposed strategy aims to maximize the district’s autonomy from the external grid, which is achieved through the cooperation of interactive buildings. Therefore, the major contribution of this study is the management and optimal cooperation of a group of buildings, each of which is equipped with its own system of vertical BIPV panels and BESS, carried out by an MPC strategy. The proposed control scheme consists of thr... [more]

Keywords: greenhouse energy modeling, Model Predictive Control, precision agriculture
The sustainable agriculture cultivation in greenhouses is constantly evolving thanks to new technologies and methodologies able to improve the crop yield and to solve the common concerns which occur in protected environments. In this paper, an MPC-based control system has been realized in order to control the indoor air temperature in a high efficiency greenhouse. The main objective is to determine the optimal control signals related to the water mass flow rate supplied by a heat pump. The MPC model allows a predefined temperature profile to be tracked with an energy saving approach. The MPC has been implemented as a multiobjective optimization model that takes into account the dynamic behavior of the greenhouse in terms of energy and mass balances. The energy supply is provided by a ground coupled heat pump (GCHP) and by the solar radiation while the energy losses related to heat transfers across the glazed envelope. The proposed MPC method was applied in a smart innovative greenhouse... [more]

Keywords: battery charging, electric vehicle, field-oriented control, grid-to-vehicle, Model Predictive Control, unified power converter, vehicle-to-grid
An electric vehicle (EV) usually has two main power converters, namely one for the motor drive system and another for the battery-charging system. Considering the similarities between both converters, a new unified power converter for motor drive and battery charging of EVs is propounded in this paper. By using a single unified power converter, the cost, volume, and weight of the power electronics are reduced, thus also making possible a reduction in the final price of the EV. Moreover, the proposed unified power converter has the capability of bidirectional power flow. During operation in traction mode, the unified power converter controls motor driving and regenerative braking. Additionally, during operation in battery-charging mode, with the EV plugged into the electrical power grid, the unified power converter controls the power flow for slow or fast battery charging (grid-to-vehicle (G2V) mode), or for discharging of the batteries (vehicle-to-grid (V2G) mode). Specifically, this p... [more]

Keywords: adaptive Tabu search, energy saving, fuzzy control, single-phase induction motor
This paper presents an energy-saving approach for electric pumps widely used in agriculture. A capacitor-run single-phase induction motor is used with a centrifugal pump. An appropriate energy-saving frequency and voltage calculation algorithm is proposed in this paper. The fuzzy controller is used to control the water flow rate of the electric pump. Moreover, the adaptive Tabu search algorithm is used to identify induction motor parameters. The experimental results from the energy-saving approach are compared with the valve control and V/f control in terms of input power and power factor. From the experimental results, the electric pump using the proposed energy-saving approach consumes minimum input power compared with other approaches. In addition, the energy-saving approach can provide a good power factor at any flow rate.

Keywords: Model Predictive Control, modular multilevel converter, power management, real-time digital simulation
The multi-modular converter (MMC) technology is becoming the preferred option for the increased deployment of variable renewable energy sources (RES) into electrical power systems. MMC is known for its reliability and modularity. The fast adjustment of the MMC’s active/reactive powers, within a few milliseconds, constitutes a major research challenge. The solution to this challenge will allow accelerated integration of RES, without creating undesirable stability issues in the future power system. This paper presents a variant of model predictive control (MPC) for the grid-connected MMC. MPC is defined using a Laguerre function to reduce the computational burden. This is achieved by reducing the number of parameters of the MMC cost function. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed MPC is verified in the real-time digital simulations. Additionally, in this paper, a comparison between an accurate mathematical and real-time simulation (RSCAD) model of an MMC is given. The compari... [more]

Keywords: decoupled control, direct power control, doubly fed induction generator, grid voltage imbalance, power generation, torque ripple cancellation, unbalanced power grid
The paper presents a decoupled direct power-controlled (DPC) of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) connected to an unbalanced power grid, executed in an orthogonal stationary reference frame related to the stator side. The control allows to maintain constant electromagnetic torque despite stator connection to the unbalanced power grid and to achieve controllable low-voltage ride through (LVRT) capability. The control does not require any signal decomposition into positive and negative sequence order, which allows to reduce its complexity and computational requirements. Then, the paper presents positive influence of rotor current feedback in the stator-controlled reference frame on control performance. It facilitates significant transient reduction and minor steady state control improvement. All the mentioned functionalities were validated both in simulation and in laboratory conditions and the obtained results are described in the paper.

Keywords: decoupled renewable power generation, fast active power-frequency control, frequency stability assessment, PHIL
Future electrical power systems will be dominated by power electronic converters, which are deployed for the integration of renewable power plants, responsive demand, and different types of storage systems. The stability of such systems will strongly depend on the control strategies attached to the converters. In this context, laboratory-scale setups are becoming the key tools for prototyping and evaluating the performance and robustness of different converter technologies and control strategies. The performance evaluation of control strategies for dynamic frequency support using fast active power regulation (FAPR) requires the urgent development of a suitable power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) setup. In this paper, the most prominent emerging types of FAPR are selected and studied: droop-based FAPR, droop derivative-based FAPR, and virtual synchronous power (VSP)-based FAPR. A novel setup for PHIL-based performance evaluation of these strategies is proposed. The setup combines the adva... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ball joint, finite element method, roughness, STM microscope, suspension, vehicle
The following paper describes research on vehicle suspension elements: the ball joints. The worn surface roughness of selected ball pins and their bearings was compared in terms of vehicle mileage, utilization period, and car model. Ball pin roughness was measured using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), whereas for the bearing surface, a profilometer was used. The aim of this study was to determine the resistive torque in an unloaded ball joint. Using the finite element method, models of the unloaded ball joint were analyzed in two scenarios: with and without interference between the worn ball and its bearing. Calculated values of resistive torques in the ball joint were compared, and recommendations were given relative to the mileage and the time after which it was necessary to perform verification or replacement of the ball joints.
A CUSUM-Based Approach for Condition Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis of Wind Turbines
Phong B. Dao
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condition monitoring, CUSUM test, Fault Detection, multiple linear regression, SCADA data, structural change, wind turbine
This paper presents a cumulative sum (CUSUM)-based approach for condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of wind turbines (WTs) using SCADA data. The main ideas are to first form a multiple linear regression model using data collected in normal operation state, then monitor the stability of regression coefficients of the model on new observations, and detect a structural change in the form of coefficient instability using CUSUM tests. The method is applied for on-line condition monitoring of a WT using temperature-related SCADA data. A sequence of CUSUM test statistics is used as a damage-sensitive feature in a control chart scheme. If the sequence crosses either upper or lower critical line after some recursive regression iterations, then it indicates the occurrence of a fault in the WT. The method is validated using two case studies with known faults. The results show that the method can effectively monitor the WT and reliably detect abnormal problems.

Keywords: adaptive control system, offshore wind energy, reactive power booster voltage, voltage stability, VSC-HVDC
Increasing offshore wind farms are rapidly installed and planned. However, this will pose a bottle neck challenge for long-distance transmission as well as inherent variation of their generating power outputs to the existing AC grid. VSC-HVDC links could be an effective and flexible method for this issue. With the growing use of voltage source converter high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) technology, the hybrid VSC-HVDC and AC system will be a next-generation transmission network. This paper analyzes the contribution of the multi VSC-HVDC system on the AC voltage stability of the hybrid system. A key contribution of this research is proposing a novel adaptive control approach of the VSC-HVDC as a so-called dynamic reactive power booster to enhance the voltage stability of the AC system. The core idea is that the novel control system is automatically providing a reactive current based on dynamic frequency of the AC system to maximal AC voltage support. Based on the analysis, an adapt... [more]

Keywords: dump load, electronic load controller, frequency regulation, symmetrical switching
Micro-hydro power plants (μHPPs) are a major energy source in grid-isolated zones because they do not require reservoirs and dams to be built. μHPPs operate in a standalone mode, but a continuously varying load generates voltage unbalances and frequency fluctuations which can cause long-term damage to plant components. One method of frequency regulation is the use of alternating current-alternating current (AC-AC) converters as an electronic load controller (ELC). The disadvantage of AC-AC converters is reactive power consumption with the associated decrease in both the power factor and the capacity of the alternator to deliver current. To avoid this disadvantage, we proposed two rectifier topologies combined with symmetrical switching. However, the performance of the frequency regulation loop with each topology remains unknown. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of the frequency regulation loop when each topology, with a symmetrical switching form, w... [more]

Keywords: coupled chaotic adaptive synchronous observer, coupled chaotic synchronous observe, master and slave system, synchronization
Synchronization of N-slave chaotic systems with a master system is a challenging task, particularly in recent times. In this paper, a novel methodology is proposed for synchronizing the N number of slave systems with a master system. The proposed methodology is based on coupled adaptive synchronous observers. The difference between the corresponding states of master and slave systems is converged to the origin by means of a novel feedback control scheme to achieve synchronization between the master and slave systems. The efficacy of the proposed methodology is verified through a simulation of FitzHugh−Nagumo non-linear systems in MATLAB. The simulation results validate and prove claims, and these systems are successfully synchronized by CCS and CCAS observer-based control.

Keywords: automation, deep Q-learning, energy-efficiency, vacuum-based handling
Billions of packages are automatically handled in warehouses every year. The gripping systems are, however, most often oversized in order to cover a large range of different carton types, package masses, and robot motions. In addition, a targeted optimization of the process parameters with the aim of reducing the oversizing requires prior knowledge, personnel resources, and experience. This paper investigates whether the energy-efficiency in vacuum-based package handling can be increased without the need for prior knowledge of optimal process parameters. The core method comprises the variation of the input pressure for the vacuum ejector, compliant to the robot trajectory and the resulting inertial forces at the gripper-object-interface. The control mechanism is trained by applying reinforcement learning with a deep Q-agent. In the proposed use case, the energy-efficiency can be increased by up to 70% within a few hours of learning. It is also demonstrated that the generalization capab... [more]

Keywords: district heating, Fault Detection, fault handling processes
Faults in district heating (DH) customer installations cause high return temperatures, which have a negative impact on both current and future district heating systems. Thus, there is a need to detect and correct these faults soon after they occur to minimize their impact on the system. This paper, therefore, suggests a fault handling process for the detection and elimination of faults in DH customer installations. The fault handling process is based on customer data analysis since many faults manifest in customer data. The fault handling process was based on an analysis of the results from the previous fault handling studies, as well as conducting a workshop with experts from the DH industry. During the workshop, different organizational and technical challenges related to fault handling were discussed. The results include a presentation of how the utilities are currently working with fault handling. The results also present an analysis of different organizational aspects that would h... [more]

Keywords: control-plane, controller, Energy Efficiency, multicore, software-defined network
Software-defined networks have become more common in data centers. The programmability of these networks is a great feature that allows innovation to be deployed fast, following the increasing number of new applications. This growth comes with a cost of more processing power and energy consumption. Many researchers have tackled this issue using existing routing techniques to dynamically adjust the network forwarding plane to save energy. On the control-plane, researchers have found algorithms for positioning the controller in a way to reduce the number of used links, thus reducing energy. These strategies reduce energy consumption at the expense of processing power of the controllers. This paper proposes a novel approach to energy efficiency focused on the network’s control-plane, which is complementary to the many already existing data-plane solutions. It takes advantage of the parallel processing capabilities of modern off-the-shelf multicore processors to split the many tasks of the... [more]

Keywords: DC–DC boost converter, fractional-order controller, iso-damping property, non-minimum phase system, PID controller
In this work, the voltage regulation of a boost converter is addressed. A non-integer order PID controller is proposed to deal with the closed-loop instability of the system. The average linear model of the converter is obtained through small-signal approximation. The resulting average linear model is considered divided into minimum and normalized non-minimum phase parts. This approach allows us to design a controller for the minimum phase part of the system, excluding temporarily the non-minimum phase one. A fractional-order PID controller approximation is suggested for the minimum phase part of the system. The proposal for the realization of the electrical controller is described and its implementation is used to corroborate its effectiveness when regulating the output voltage in the boost converter. The fractional-order PID approximation achieves regulation of the output voltage in the boost converter by exhibiting the iso-damping property and using a single control loop, which conf... [more]

This paper presents a newly designed switching linear feedback structure of sliding mode control (SLF-SMC) plugged with an model reference adaptive system (MRAS) based sensorless field-oriented control (SFOC) for induction motor (IM). Indeed, the performance of the MRAS depends mainly on the operating point and the parametric variation of the IM. Hence, the sliding mode control (SMC) could be considered a good control alternative due to its easy implementation and robustness. Simulation and experimentation results are presented to show the superiority of the proposed SLF-SMC technique in comparison with the classical PI controller under different speed ranges and inertia conditions.
