Subject: Optimization
Keywords: differential evolution algorithm, differential evolution algorithm, electric aircraft propulsion, electric motor thermal problem, optimization based on FEA
Nowadays, the reduction of aircraft emissions is one of the industrial targets with a horizon time until 2050. The recent progresses in electrical drives give the opportunity to modify the aircraft propulsion based on thermal engine or gas turbine to a hybrid/full electric one. Some problems must be solved: weight, reliability, and the choice of the best configuration for the electric propulsion. One of the most important aspects to solve is the thermal behavior of power converters and electric motors. This paper proposes an optimization procedure for the design of surface permanent magnet motors used for the aircraft propulsion: the aim of the paper is to investigate the possibility of cooling the motor with only the air flow due to the aircraft speed. The optimization procedure has been solved with the integration of analytical model and finite element analysis and using a differential evolution algorithm.

Keywords: binary logistic regression, phasor machine learning, Sensors, smart grids (intelligent networks), wireless network
This article focuses on addressing the data aggregation faults caused by the Phasor Measuring Unit (PMU) by installing Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) in the grid. All data that is monitored by PMU should be sent to the base station for further action. But the data that is sent from PMU does not reach the main server properly in many situations. To avoid this situation, a sensor-based technology has been introduced in the proposed method for sensing the values that are monitored by PMU. Also, the basic parameters that are necessary for determining optimal solutions like energy consumption, distance and cost have been calculated for wireless sensors, whereas, for PMU optimal placements with cost analysis have been restrained. For analyzing and improving the accuracy of the proposed method, an effective Binary Logistic Regression (BLR) algorithm has been integrated with an objective function. The sensor will report all measured PMU values to an Online Monitoring System (OMS). To examine t... [more]

Keywords: inverse heat transfer problem, minichannel flow boiling, Trefftz method, void fraction
The study presents the experimental and numeric heat transfer investigations in flow boiling of water through an asymmetrically heated, rectangular and horizontal minichannel, with transparent side walls. A dedicated system was designed to record images of two-phase flow structures using a high-speed video camera with a synchronous movement system. The images were analyzed with Matlab 2019a scripts for determination of the void fraction for each pattern of two-phase flow structures observed. The experimental data measured during the experimental runs included inlet and outlet temperature, temperature at three internal points of the heater body, volume flux of the flowing water, inlet pressure, pressure drop, current and the voltage drop in the heater power supply. The flows were investigated at Reynolds number characteristic of laminar flow. The mathematical model assumed the heat transfer process in the measurement module to be steady-state with temperature independent thermal propert... [more]

Keywords: asymmetrical fault, harmonic analysis, parameter identification, photovoltaic systems
The asymmetric faults often cause the power grid current imbalance and power grid oscillation, which brings great instability risk to the power grid. To address this problem, this paper presented a modeling and parameter optimization method of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems, considering the low voltage ride-through (LVRT) control. The harmonics of the grid current under asymmetric faults were analyzed based on the negative-sequence voltage feedforward control method. The notch filter was added to the voltage loop to filter out the harmonic components of the DC bus voltage and reduce the harmonic contents of the given grid current value. The proportional resonant (PR) controller was added to the current loop. The combination of these two components could reduce the 3rd, 5th, and 7th harmonics of the grid current and the output power fluctuation. Then, the parameters of the inverter controller were identified by the adaptive differential evolution (ADE) algorithm based on the s... [more]

Keywords: critical loads, electric vehicles, energy resilience, HOMER Pro, microgrids, New Zealand, optimal expansion planning, renewable energy systems, resilient energy systems, Technoeconomic Analysis
In the grid-tied micro-grid context, energy resilience can be defined as the time period that a local energy system can supply the critical loads during an unplanned upstream grid outage. While the role of renewable-based micro-grids in enhancing communities’ energy resilience is well-appreciated, the academic literature on the techno-economic optimisation of community-scale micro-grids lacks a quantitative decision support analysis concerning the inclusion of a minimum resilience constraint in the optimisation process. Utilising a specifically-developed, time-based resilience capacity characterisation method to quantify the sustainability of micro-grids in the face of different levels of extended grid power outages, this paper facilitates stakeholder decision-making on the trade-off between the whole-life cost of a community micro-grid system and its degree of resilience. Furthermore, this paper focuses on energy infrastructure expansion planning, aiming to analyse the importance of m... [more]

Yuanchao Li, Trung Van Nguyen
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydrogen evolution, hydrogen oxidation catalyst, hydrogen-bromine fuel cell, rhodium sulfide catalyst
A RhxSy/C catalyst with high mass-specific electrochemical surface area (ECSA/mass), high hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR)/hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, and high Nafion® ionomer-affinity was synthesized and evaluated. A new sulfur source, Na2S instead of (NH4)2S2O3, was applied to prepare the rhodium sulfide precursor Rh2S3 that resulted in a RhxSy catalyst with higher HOR/HER catalytic activity after thermal treatment. The higher activity was attributed to the higher quantity formation of the more active phase Rh3S4, in addition to the other active Rh17S15 phase, in the RhxSy catalyst. Using this new sulfur source, carbon substrate functionalization, and the mass-transfer-controlled nanoparticle growth process, the average particle size of this catalyst was reduced from 13.5 nm to 3.2 nm, and its ECSA/mass was increased from 9.3 m2/g-Rh to 43.0 m2/g-Rh. Finally, by applying the Baeyer−Villiger and ester hydrolysis process to convert the Nafion® ionomer-unfriendly ketone... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy saving, gradient utilization, waste heat utilization
To address the large temperature difference in the air heater (AH) inlet of a traditional exhaust heat utilization system and energy grade mismatch problems during the heat and mass transfer processes, this study proposed a new multi-level waste heat cascade utilization system. Based on a principle of “temperature-to-port and cascade utilization”, this system uses the boiler side high-temperature flue gas and low-temperature air, and the turbine side high-temperature feed water and low-temperature condensate water, to conduct cross heat exchange according to the energy grade matching principle. Combined with a typical 1000 MW coal-fired unit, the heat transfer characteristics and energy-saving benefits of the new system were analyzed. The results showed that the new system has excellent performance: the heat rate decreased by 91 kJ/kWh, coal consumption decreased by 3.3 g/kWh, and power generation efficiency increased to 49.39%.

Keywords: DEA, electric power industry, Japan, South Korea
This study compares the electric power sectors between Japan and South (S) Korea. Both nations have been under a global trend of deregulation. To assess their progress due to industrial change and technology development, we use Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) as an assessment tool that enables us to evaluate the level of simultaneous achievements on economic and technological measures, so assessing the degree of holistic development. DEA has been widely applied for performance assessment in the past decades. In this study, the method compares electric power firms by their operational efficiencies. To compare their achievements, it is necessary to develop a new type of DEA application for performance measurement. The proposed approach adds two analytical capabilities. First, the approach needs to handle “zero” in a data set and then restrict multipliers (i.e., weights among inputs and outputs) without any prior information to increase our empirical reliability. No study has simultaneous... [more]

Keywords: active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter, control system, distributed power generation, Energy Storage, integrated secondary DC port, low-frequency current ripple
This paper proposes a control system for the single-phase Three-Ports Active Neutral- Point-Clamped (ANPC-3P) converter, which can inject a sinusoidal current into the grid, balance the neutral point voltage, and regulate the energy storage system (ESS) current with reduced low-frequency ripple. Despite other applications, ANPC-3P inverter can be used in grid-tied renewable generation to allow the simultaneous connection of a photovoltaic (PV) energy source and an ESS to the AC grid. The ESS is connected directly to the inverter circuit without any auxiliary DC-DC converter, but due to the DC bus pulsed power, it can be subjected to low-frequency current ripple. This undesired current ripple is difficult to filter and can lead to shorter battery life. A control system based on well-known controllers is analyzed and designed. Theoretical analysis is validated experimentally using a single-phase 1-kW prototype.

Keywords: electromagnetic modeling, fractional slots, PM-less rotating machines, self-excited synchronous machines, space MMF harmonics
Today, self-excited synchronous machines are the object of increasing interest because they use neither brushes nor permanent magnets. In fact, the price of rare earth metals is considerably high and still raising. This is the main reason why researchers are looking for suitable alternatives to permanent magnets in the construction of rotating electrical machinery. This paper deals with the design and laboratory testing of a synchronous machine with an efficient layout and an economic construction. The proposed self-excited machine exploits the space harmonics of the magneto-motive force to produce the excitation field. The model analysis is based on the computation of the back EMFs that are associated to the magneto motive force components. The mathematical model suggests an easy way to decouple the rotor windings. The machine has been built and experimental tests have been performed in order to validate the electrical behavior.

Keywords: co-simulation, dynamic performance test (DPT), hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS), hybrid simulation, real-time hybrid-simulator (RTHS), real-time simulator (RTS), testing of replicas
This paper presents the hardware-in-the-loop simulation for dynamic performance test (HILS-DPT) of power electronic equipment replicas using a real-time hybrid simulator (RTHS). The authors developed the procedure of HILS-DPT, and as an actual case example, the results of HILS-DPT of Static VAR Compensator (SVC) replica using RTHS is presented. RTHS is a co-simulation tool that synthesizes real-time simulator (RTS) with transient stability program to perform real-time dynamic simulation of a large power system. As power electronics applications have been increasing, the electric utilities have performed HILS-DPT of the power electronics equipment to validate the performance and investigate interactions. Because inspection tests are limited in their ability to validate its impact on the power system during various contingencies, all power electronics equipment newly installed in the Korean power system should take HILS-DPT using large-scale RTS with replicas since 2018. Although large-s... [more]

Keywords: economic analysis, EDFM, natural fractures, net present value, shale gas, statistics-based methods
In order to account for big uncertainties such as well interferences, hydraulic and natural fractures’ properties and matrix properties in shale gas reservoirs, it is paramount to develop a robust and efficient approach for well spacing optimization. In this study, a novel well spacing optimization workflow is proposed and applied to a real shale gas reservoir with two-phase flow, incorporating the systematic analysis of uncertainty reservoir and fracture parameters. One hundred combinations of these uncertainties, considering their interactions, were gathered from assisted history matching solutions, which were calibrated by the actual field production history from the well in the Sichuan Basin. These combinations were used as direct input to the well spacing optimization workflow, and five “wells per section” spacing scenarios were considered, with spacing ranging from 157 m (517 ft) to 472 m (1550 ft). An embedded discrete fracture model was used to efficiently model both hydraulic... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: electric tree, electric tree capacitance, HVDC-cable insulation ageing, XLPE ageing
One of the challenges in laboratory investigation of degradation and ageing of HVDC cable insulation is related to securing, or in other words, imitating the real service environment of the material specimens. So far, the published data refer to experiments conducted in thermo-oxidative conditions, which is not the case during normal cable operation. In service, the cable insulation is protected by a metallic barrier that blocks the transfer of any substances in and out of the construction. By-products from the cross-linking reactions cannot diffuse out and any foreign substances are blocked from entering the insulation. Thus, in order to generate results that are valid, these conditions must be replicated in laboratory experiments. This contribution presents a methodology elaborated for performing ageing experiments in a hermetically sealed environment. Degradation of the material is evaluated through changes in the electrical tree inception voltage and test object capacitance over ti... [more]

Keywords: distributed MPPT, modular multilevel converter, MPPT, PV panel
The presence and evolution of static power converters in electric grids are growing on a daily basis. Starting from the most used voltage source converter (VSC), passing through the use of multilevel converters, the most recent configuration is the so-called modular multilevel converter (MMC). Because of its intrinsic advantages, it is used not only in high-voltage systems but also in low- and medium-voltage ones to interface renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic (PV) panels. Several configurations and maximum power point tracker (MPPT) algorithms have been proposed and analyzed for MMC-PV-based systems. However, when using distributed MPPTs, partial shading conditions cause a problem. The PV panel can be directly connected to the MMC using its dc link or submodule. Based on this configuration, this paper proposes a novel control strategy that tracks both the ac grid current and ac circulating current for a single-phase low-voltage system to obtain the maximum power under any i... Keywords: clamp circuit, coupled inductor, high voltage gain, SEPIC converter, voltage stress
A new non-isolated modified SEPIC front-end dc-dc converter for the low power system is proposed in this paper, and this converter is the next level of the traditional SEPIC converter with additional devices, such as two diodes and splitting of the output capacitor into two equal parts. The circuit topology proposed in this paper is formulated by combining the boost structure with the traditional SEPIC converter. Therefore, the proposed converter has the benefit of the SEPIC converter, such as continuous input current. The proposed circuit structure also improves the features, such as high voltage gain and high conversion efficiency. The converter comprises one MOSFET switch, one coupled inductor, three diodes, and two capacitors, including the output capacitor. The converter effectively recovers the leakage energy of the coupled inductor through the passive clamp circuit. The operation of the proposed converter is explained in continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduct... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: efficiency at maximal power, electro-chemical reaction, finite time thermodynamics, low-dissipation, Otto cycle
A novel analytical method was developed for analysis of efficiency at maximum power of a hybrid cycle combining electrochemical and Otto engines. The analysis is based on the low-dissipation model, which relates energy dissipation with energy transfer rate. Efficiency at maximum power of a hybrid engine operating between two reservoirs of chemical potentials is evaluated. The engine is composed of an electrochemical device that transforms chemical potential to electrical work of an Otto engine that uses the heat generated in the electrochemical device and its exhaust effluent for mechanical work production. The results show that efficiency at maximum power of the hybrid cycle is identical to the efficiency at maximum power of an electrochemical engine alone; however, the power is the product of the electrochemical engine power and the compression ratio of the Otto engine. Partial mass transition by the electrochemical device from the high to the low chemical potential is also examined.... [more]

Automated fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) could provide a cornerstone for predictive maintenance of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems based on the development of simulation models able to accurately compare the faulty operation with respect to nominal conditions. In this paper, several experiments have been carried out for assessing the performance of the HVAC unit (nominal cooling/heating capacity of 5.0/5.0 kW) controlling the thermo-hygrometric comfort inside a 4.0 × 4.0 × 3.6 m test room at the Department of Architecture and Industrial Design of the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli (Italy); then, a detailed dynamic simulation model has been developed and validated by contrasting the predictions with the measured data. The model has also been used to analyze the dynamic variations of key parameters associated to faulty operation in comparison to normal performance, in order to identify simplified rules for detection of any non-optimal states of HV... Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: alternative fuel vehicle, consumer preference, energy transition, fuel cell vehicle, hydrogen refueling station, mixed logit, vehicle infrastructure
As a countermeasure to the greenhouse gas problem, the world is focusing on alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs). The most prominent alternatives are battery electric vehicles (BEV) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). This study examines FCEVs, especially considering hydrogen refueling stations to fill the gap in the research. Many studies suggest the important impact that infrastructure has on the diffusion of AFVs, but they do not provide quantitative preferences for the design of hydrogen refueling stations. This study analyzes and presents a consumer preference structure for hydrogen refueling stations, considering the production method, distance, probability of failure to refuel, number of dispensers, and fuel costs as core attributes. For the analysis, stated preference data are applied to choice experiments, and mixed logit is used for the estimation. Results indicate that the supply stability of hydrogen refueling stations is the second most important attribute following fuel... [more]
Energy Intensity and Long- and Short-Term Efficiency in US Manufacturing Industry

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, energy intensity, energy paradox, persistent efficiency, stochastic frontier, transient efficiency, US manufacturing
We analyze energy use efficiency of manufacturing industries in US manufacturing over five decades from 1960 to 2011. We apply a 4-component stochastic frontier model, which allows disentangling efficiency into a short- and long-term efficiency as well as accounting for industry heterogeneity. The data come from NBER-CES Manufacturing Industry Database. We find that relative to decade-specific frontiers, the overall efficiency of manufacturing industries, which is a product of transient and persistent efficiencies has deteriorated greatly in the 1970s and rebounded only in the 2000s. The industries are very efficient in the short-term and this has not changed over five decades. The high level of overall inefficiency is almost completely due to the structural inefficiency which can be explained by what is referred to as the “energy paradox”. Finally, higher energy-intensive industries perform worse in terms of energy use efficiency than their low energy-intensity counterparts.

Biomass is the fourth largest energy source in the world; it is easy to store and can be converted into various kinds of renewable energies. The biomass cogeneration system is an important way to utilize biomass energy, especially in northern China. At present, there are many problems in biomass power plants in China, such as high latent heat loss of chimney and cooling towers, low power generation efficiency, and thermal efficiency. In order to solve this problem, this paper introduces low vacuum circulating water heating technology in the biomass cogeneration system, and expounds the differences between China and Western countries in biomass power plants. Based on this background, the technology is redesigned and reformed to make it more suitable for the biomass fuel varieties in the power plant location, and realize the localization of technology and the expansion of scale. The application of this improved technology in China’s biomass cogeneration project is analyzed. Based on the... [more]

The application of a distribution static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM) is the best technical means to solve the problem of reactive power compensation and harmonics. The D-STATCOM system has the characteristics of variable parameters, strong coupling, nonlinearity and multi-variability. In order to improve the speed of the dynamic tracking response and anti-disturbance capability of the D-STATCOM, the article proposes an improved Linear Active Disturbance Rejection Controller (LADRC) based on the total disturbance deviation control method. Combined with double closed-loop control, the inner loop takes the current as the state variable, and the outer loop uses the DC side output voltage as the state variable to achieve robust stability of the D-STATCOM and controller output. The simulation results show that the improved LADRC is more stable than the traditional LADRC in controlling the DC voltage waveform of the compensator, reactive current tracking and reactive power compensatio... The present inquiry addresses the income-environment relationship in oil-producing countries and scrutinizes the further drivers of atmospheric pollution in the respective settings. The existing literature that tests the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis within the framework of the black-box approaches provides only a bird’s-eye perspective on the long-run income-environment relationship. The aspiration behind this study is making the first step toward the disentanglement of the sources of carbon dioxide emissions, which could be employed in the pollution mitigation policies of this group of countries. Based on the combination of two strands of literature, the environmental Kuznets curve conjecture and the resource curse, the paper at hand proposes an augmented theoretical framework of this inquiry. To approach the research questions empirically, the study employs advanced panel cointegration techniques. To avoid econometric misspecification, the study also employs for the first t... [more]

Device engineering with proper material integration into perovskite solar cells (PSCs) would extend their durability provided a special care is spent to retain interface integrity during use. In this paper, we propose a method to preserve the perovskite (PSK) surface from solvent-mediated modification and damage that can occur during the deposition of a top contact and furtherly during operation. Our scheme used a hole transporting layer-free top-contact made of Carbon (mostly graphite) to the side of hole extraction. We demonstrated that the PSK/graphite interface benefits from applying a vacuum-curing step after contact deposition that allowed mitigating the loss in efficiency of the solar devices, as well as a full recovery of the electrical performances after device storage in dry nitrogen and dark conditions. The device durability compared to reference devices was tested over 90 days. Conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) disclosed an improved surface capability to hole exchan... [more]

Keywords: charging stations, e-mobility, electric power quality
Recently, there has been dynamic development of electromobility. This trend is predicted to grow exponentially, which will contribute to the creation of an extensive infrastructure of electric car charging points. For distribution network operators, this implies that in addition to the increase in demand for power and electricity, the number of converter systems connected to their networks will also increase. It is therefore necessary to determine the potential impact of electric vehicle charging systems on electricity quality. To this end, the authors of the present study developed simulation models based on measurements of the actual charger and the data provided by the manufacturers of the equipment and using simulation models widely described in the literature. On the basis of the study results, the impact of electric car chargers on electric power quality was assessed, and attention was given to the opportunities offered by the development of charging systems with vehicle-to-grid...
