Three Openings at NETL

The US Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory has posted three positions for General Engineers / Physical Scientists. The three positions are immediately of interest to the PSE community. Quoting the NETL’s Dr. David Miller, the positions are:

  • Processes Systems Engineering, which will focus on the analysis, design, scale-up, and optimization of complex, steady-state and dynamic systems at scales ranging from materials to processes to supply chains and enterprise systems, developing and applying computational frameworks for simulation-based optimization and uncertainty mitigation. Potential application areas include Integrated Energy Systems (IES), which synergistically incorporate diverse energy sources, including renewable, nuclear, and fossil with carbon capture, to more effectively provide environmentally sustainable, competitive, and reliable power, heat, mobility, and a variety of other consumer products and services.
  • Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), which will include Life Cycle Assessment, Life Cycle Cost Analysis, Circularity Modeling, Social Life Cycle Analysis, and various other methods to evaluate the environmental, economic, and social attributes of energy systems ranging from the extraction of raw materials from the ground to the use of the energy carrier to perform work. Results will be used to inform research at NETL and evaluate energy options from a National perspective
  • Energy Process Analysis, which will focus on complex techno-economic analyses of emerging technical matters associated with evolving US energy systems and markets (e.g., power, heat, hydrogen, mobility (fuels), chemicals, and other products). A deep familiarity with the energy sector; associated commercial, emerging, and concept-stage technologies; relevant literature; state-of-the-art process synthesis, modeling, and simulation tools and techniques; data and statistical analysis techniques; and capital cost estimation methods will be used to produce novel insights and R&D direction in support of the cost-effective, environmentally-benign use of domestic energy resources as part of a reliable and secure domestic energy infrastructure.
