Elena Antuña-Yudego, Víctor Manuel Fernández-Pacheco, Eduardo Álvarez-Álvarez, Juan Luis Carús-Candás, María José Suárez-López
August 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: complex terrain scenario, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), industrial emissions plume behaviour, pollutant dispersion
In a context where air quality has become a global concern, modelling techniques are becoming very popular for analysing pollutant dispersion conditions. While models based on empirical formulations are most widely used for industrial scenarios, singular cases involving complex terrain or large obstacles in the vicinity of emission sources require a more robust approach to evaluate the dispersion conditions. In this research, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is developed to analyse the dispersion of pollutants from an industrial facility whose location and characteristics suggest the occurrence of complex flow features that affect the dispersion patterns. In addition, the variation of the gas exit temperatures of waste heat recovery systems is proposed as a measure to mitigate the impact of the plume. The simulation results show unexpected deviations in the plume path affecting vulnerable areas in a nearby mountainside, but increasing the gas exit temperature is useful to pre... [more]

August 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: extrusion deformation, gas-assisted extrusion, gas–liquid two-phase model, numerical simulation
In the process of the double-layer gas-assisted extrusion of plastic micro-tubes, the external size and surface quality of the micro-tubes are greatly affected by the size of the assisting gas inlet slit inside the mold. Therefore, in this experiment, a two-phase flow model was established based on a compressible gas and a non-compressible melt. The Polyflow finite element solution software module was used to solve the velocity field, temperature field, pressure field, and section size of the melt under the condition of double-layer gas-assisted extrusion in a mold under different gas inlet slit widths. The results show that, with an increase in the width of the gas inlet slit, the melt outlet velocity increases, the surface temperature increases, wall thickness shrinkage increases, and interior diameter expansion increases. In the process of gas-assisted extrusion, the thickness of the air cushion is affected by adjusting the size of the gas inlet slit, and, hence, changes the shape a... [more]

Keywords: equilibrium catalyst, FCC catalyst, metal contamination, metals loading, microcatalytic performance
Qualitative and quantitative description are key to solving the problem of heavy metal contamination on fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts. The loading efficiencies for different metals were compared for the two lab simulation methods of Multi-Cyclic Deactivation (MCD) and Advanced Catalyst Evaluation (ACE), and the microcatalytic performance of metal-contaminated catalysts was evaluated using an ACE Model C device. The results show that the MCD and ACE methods both obtain extremely high data accuracy, indicating that they can be used to ensure the parallel reliability of experimental results. The typical operating parameters for hydrothermal aging and metals loading can be adjusted to suit different metal types and content targets for either of these two simulation methods. Compared with an equilibrium catalyst from an industrial unit, the MCD method has the advantages of basic hydrothermal aging treatment with less metal loading efficiency, while the ACE method has an accurate... Keywords: cokriging method, collocated cokriging, Eaton method, formation pressure prediction, variation function
Compared to conventional reservoirs, the prediction of pressure in ultra-deep tight sandstone formations is difficult. The prediction of seismic pressure is more challenging than well-logging pressure prediction. The main methods for seismic pressure prediction include the equivalent depth method, Eaton method, Fillippone formula, and modified versions. Among them, the Eaton method is widely used and has good effectiveness. However, this method relies on difficult-to-obtain normal compaction trend lines, which leads to low prediction accuracy in space. To address this issue, a method combining the Eaton method and collocated cokriging is proposed. Herein, the Eaton formula is used to predict formation pressure at the well, with compressional wave velocity as the covariate for predicting the main variable—formation pressure. By simulating the shear wave velocity based on seismic compressional wave velocity, the influence of various parameters on the prediction results is analyzed, and t... [more]

Keywords: crack propagation, FRANC 3D, life prediction, SMA490BW
In this paper, the precrack propagation behavior of an SMA490BW welded joint in the core zone and heat-affected zone was analyzed through experiments based on the FRANC 3D and ABAQUS cosimulation method, and life prediction of these cracks was also investigated. The results show that the experimental crack propagation path and crack propagation rate in the weld core zone and heat-affected zone agree well with the simulation results, with a small relative error. The life span of the prefabricated crack in the heat-affected zone was higher than that in the core zone. Furthermore, regarding the life prediction results for the two samples, the relative error obtained using FRANC 3D was about 5%, which was verified using the method of joint simulation of crack propagation behavior in the zone simulation and their life prediction with accurate feasibility.

August 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD modeling, flashing-induced instability, thermal and mechanical non-equilibrium, thermal phase change model
Flashing-induced instability (FII) has a significant impact on the safe operation of a natural circulation circuit, a phenomenon frequently encountered in the cooling systems of advanced light water reactors. While one-dimensional system codes are commonly used for the engineering design and safety analysis of FII, there is a strong academic interest in understanding the underlying physical mechanisms. To address this, high-resolution computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations serve as a valuable tool. However, the current state of CFD modeling for two-phase flows with phase change, which are particularly highly transient fluctuating flashing flows, is still in its early stages of development. In this study, we establish a CFD model that focuses on interphase heat transfer to analyze the phase change during FII. By incorporating experimental data from the literature, we investigate the transient flow field and thermodynamic behavior in the riser of the GENEVA test facility. The stu... [more]

Stability Analysis and Nonlinear Chatter Prediction for Grinding a Slender Cylindrical Part
Tianyi Sun, Yao Yan
August 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: almost-asynchronized nonlinear chatter, continuation algorithm, plunge grinding slender parts, time-delayed regenerative chatter
A cylindrical plunge grinding process was modeled to investigate nonlinear regenerative chatter vibration. The rotating workpiece was a slender Euler−Bernoulli beam, and the grinding wheel was a rigid body moving towards the workpiece at a very low feed speed. A numerical method was proposed to provide the critical boundaries for chatter-free grinding. It was demonstrated that the intersection set surrounded by these critical boundaries was the chatter-free region for the considered parameters. When these parameters were outside of the chatter-free region, the stable grinding process underwent a supercritical Hopf bifurcation, resulting in the loss of the chatter-free behavior and the emergence of periodic chatter motions. Then, the periodic motions of both the grinding wheel and the workpiece were predicted analytically using the method of multiple scales, showing the effect of the regenerative force on the grinding process. We demonstrated that the analytical prediction was valid sin... [more]

August 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, LPG, multiphase, pressure, risk assessment, Simulation
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has become a widely used tool for predicting hazardous scenarios. The present study aimed to assess CFD prediction applied to LPG containers under heating. Thus, two cylinders, each filled with propane or butane, were experimentally exposed to fire, and the pressure increment was recorded. The results were compared with those provided by a CFD method (Ansys Fluent). The limitations of the method are discussed, and a trend in the error increment and its relation to the reduced temperature increment are presented. The results obtained show that the computational method had a good agreement, with a relative error of 19% at a reduced temperature equal to 2. Furthermore, the method had a better fit with heavier alkanes, as the butane was less influenced by temperature overestimation compared with propane.

Keywords: dynamic load, energy dissipation, finite element model, modal vibration, premium connection
In the process of high flow rate fracture and high gas production, the sealing performance of the premium connection decreases due to the dynamic load and vibration of downhole tubing strings, which may cause accidents. Existing static analysis methods cannot effectively explain this phenomenon. The main objective of this paper is to propose a novel analytical method for evaluating the sealing performance of a premium connection. In this paper, a dynamic model of sealing surfaces of the premium connection is established based on the vibration equation of elastic rod, and the hysteresis characteristics and energy dissipation mechanism of sealing surfaces are analyzed. Considering the influence of spherical radius, internal pressure, axial cyclic load amplitude, and modal vibration, a spherical-conical premium connection finite element model is established to analyze the influence laws of the connection’s energy dissipation and sealing performance. The results show that the sealing perfo... [more]

Keywords: butterfly valve, Computational Fluid Dynamics, numerical analysis, pinch valve, throttle valve
Valves are important components in controlling the amount of fluid going to devices. One of these types is the butterfly valve (BFV) that adjusts the amount of flow by rotating the valve disk by means of its shafts which is usually located in the middle of the flow. Despite its common usage in various applications, the BFV is known to cause a high-pressure drop. Conversely, the pinch valve is another type of flow control device that uses a pinching mechanism to open and close the inner tube by pinching at different degrees. The absence of flow-controlling mechanisms in the flow path, such as the valve disk and its shaft, contribute to the minimal pressure drop in pinch valves. The high-pressure drop in BFVs and the minimal pressure drop in pinch valve flow make it worthwhile to investigate and compare their flow at all opening positions of the two valves. Therefore, this work numerically explores the potential of using the pinch valve as an alternative to the BFV in terms of its abilit... [more]

August 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blade shape optimization, drag-dominant tidal turbine, moment balancing method, pinwheel, Savonius, simulation validation
Current performance analysis processes for drag-dominant tidal turbines are unsuitable as disk actuator theory lacks support for varying swept blockage area, bypass flow downstream interaction, and parasitic rotor drag, whereas blade element momentum theory is computably effective for three-blade lift-dominated aerofoil. This study proposes a novel technique to calculate the optimal turbine tip speed ratio (TSR) with a cost-effective and user-friendly moment balancing algorithm. A reliable dynamic TSR matrix was developed with varying rotational speeds and fluid velocities, unlike previous works simulated at a fixed fluid velocity. Thrust and idle moments are introduced as functions of inlet fluid velocity and rotational speed, respectively. The quadratic relationships are verified through regression analysis, and net moment equations are established. Rotational speed was a reliable predictor for Pinwheel’s idle moment, while inlet velocity was a reliable predictor for thrust moment fo... [more]

Ship-to-shore connection is an important technological element that reduces air pollution in ports. Therefore, ports install facilities that allow mooring ships to connect to the port distribution network. By 2025, this will be mandatory for all ports in Europe. This can be a challenging task in most ports due to the different frequency of the network and ship frequency. This problem can be solved by the use of grid-forming static frequency converters. This solution also brings some other advantages: The ship is not threatened by high shore short-circuit currents, and the port distribution network is not affected by the character of the ship load. However, frequency converter software must include a droop control algorithm to ensure that voltage deviations do not exceed the allowed limits during transients. Typical frequency converters used for shore connection are those developed as static frequency converters (SFCs). However, those converters were not developed for large power output... [more]

Keywords: Gauss-Hermite quadrature, Nataf transformation, power system dynamic simulation, uncertainty analysis
Uncertain variables, such as electric power system parameters, have significant impacts on dynamic simulations of power systems. As traditional uncertainty analysis methods for power system dynamic simulations, both the simulation method and the approximation methods are difficult to balance the model complexity, computational efficiency, and simulation accuracy. In order to balance the model complexity, computational efficiency, and simulation accuracy, this paper proposes a method for uncertainty analysis for power system dynamic simulation based on the Nataf transformation and Gaussian-Hermite quadrature. Firstly, the samples on the normal distribution space are determined according to the Gaussian-Hermite quadrature points and the Nataf transformation. Secondly, obtain the simulation samples by inverse Nataf transformation, and perform power system dynamic simulation. Thirdly, the random output is approximated as a linear combination of a single random input, and the mean and stand... [more]

Keywords: deep learning, intelligent temperature control, reinforcement learning, stretch blow molding
Stretch blow molding serves as the primary technique employed in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. Typically, a stretch blow molding machine consists of various components, including a preform infeed system, transfer system, heating system, molding system, bottle discharge system, etc. Of particular significance is the temperature control within the heating system, which significantly influences the quality of PET bottles, especially when confronted with environmental temperature changes between morning and evening during certain seasons. The on-site operators of the stretch blow molding machine often need to adjust the infrared heating lamps in the heating system several times. The adjustment process heavily relies on the personnel’s experience, causing a production challenge for bottle manufacturers. Therefore, this paper takes the heating system of the stretch blow molding machine as the object and uses the deep reinforcement learning method to develop an i... [more]

Keywords: coalescence-induced jumping, critical radius ratio, molecular dynamics simulations, superhydrophobic surfaces, unequal radii
The phenomenon of droplet coalescence and jumping has received increasing attention due to its potential applications in the fields of condensation heat transfer and surface self-cleaning. Basic research on the process and mechanism of coalescence-induced droplet jumping has been carried out, and some universal laws have been established. However, it is found that the focus of these studies is based on two identical droplets, and the coalescence-induced jumping with different radii is rarely investigated, which is commonly encountered in nature. Therefore, it is essential to proceed with the research of coalescence and jumping of droplets with unequal radii. In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to reveal the effects of radius ratio and radius of small droplets on jumping velocity. The results show that as the increasing of radius ratio with an unchanged small droplet radius of 8.1 nm, the jumping velocity increases then decreases, which indicates there is an... [more]

Keywords: carbonate reservoir, foamed-VES acid, temporary plugging and diverting
Successful matrix acidizing for extremely thick carbonate reservoirs with long horizontal well sections and strong heterogeneity requires efficient temporary plugging and diverting of acid fluid, ensuring acid fluid distribution to each production layer. Foamed-viscoelastic-surfactant (Foamed-VES) acid combines the benefits of both foam acid and viscoelastic surfactant (VES) acid, integrating foam plugging and viscous plugging. It can achieve uniform acid distribution in highly heterogeneous reservoirs. However, little research has been conducted on the wormhole propagation law of foamed-VES acid. To address this gap, this study established a mathematical model of foamed-VES acid wormhole propagation based on the dual-scale model. The model was coupled with a random porosity distribution generated with geological statistical software. The effects of different factors on foamed-VES acid etching were simulated. Numerical results show that foamed-VES acid can stimulate low-permeability re... [more]

Keywords: active frequency drift method, active islanding detection technique, different current injection waveform, harmonic, non-detection zone
The active frequency drift (AFD) method is an effective method to detect islanding in grid-connected photovoltaic systems. However, it has some inherent drawbacks, such as generating higher harmonics. In order to reduce the harmonics and non-detection zone (NDZ), various improved AFD methods have been proposed, but they still suffer from high harmonics and reduced detection speed. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes an innovative islanding detection technique based on AFD. Analysis reveals that the proposed method reduces harmonics by 68% compared to conventional AFD and has a larger chopping factor. Therefore, this technique offers several distinct advantages, including accelerated detection speed, reduced NDZ and harm caused by disturbances, and improved power quality. Furthermore, to verify the harmonic impact of this proposed islanding detection method, simulations and analyses are conducted using simulation software of Matlab/Simulink. Fractured-vuggy reservoirs are a new target in carbonate oil and gas exploration and development. Because of well-developed reservoir bodies, including fractures and caverns, bottom water invasion can be observed in oilfield development, with low utilization efficiency of crude oil in the reservoir. Accordingly, this study focused on the intersection region of the S99 unit of the Tahe fractured-vuggy reservoirs. Based on seismic data, the reservoir bodies can be divided into three types—caverns, fractures, and broken solution pores. Using the same location condition assignment algorithm, four single-type models are fused into a multi-scale discrete three-dimensional geological model of fractured and cavernous reservoirs, and the corresponding fractured-vuggy reservoir model was established for numerical simulation. The single-well historical fitting precision exceeded 85%. Furthermore, the development can be divided into four stages—initial stage of production, peak production stage, l... [more]
