April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery, cell, crash, design, FE, homogenised, indentation, jellyroll, lithium-ion, Modelling, pouch, Simulation
The mechanical integrity of a lithium ion battery cell can be evaluated using finite element (FE) simulation techniques. In this study, different FE modelling approaches including heterogeneous, homogeneous, hybrid and sandwich methods are presented and analysed. The basic capabilities of the FE-methods and their suitability to simulate a real mechanical safety test procedures on battery cells are investigated by performing a simulation of a spherical indentation test on a sample pouch cell. For each modelling approach, one battery cell model was created. In order to observe the system behaviour, relevant parametric studies involving coefficient of friction and failure strain of separator were performed. This studied showed that these parameters can influence the maximum force and the point of failure of the cell. Furthermore, the influence of an anisotropic separator on the results was also investigated. The advantages and disadvantages of each modelling approach are discussed and a s... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, ejector, Energy, heat recovery, low-grade heat, R245fa, Simulation, system, thermal
This paper describes an ejector model for the prediction of on-design performance under available conditions. This is a direct method of calculating the optimal ejector performance (entrainment ratio or ER) without the need for iterative methods, which have been conventionally used. The values of three ejector efficiencies used to account for losses in the ejector are calculated by using a systematic approach (by employing CFD analysis) rather than the hit and trial method. Both experimental and analytical data from literature are used to validate the presented analytical model with good agreement for on-design performance. R245fa working fluid has been used for low-grade heat applications, and Engineering Equation Solver (EES) has been employed for simulating the proposed model. The presented model is suitable for integration with any thermal system model and its optimization because of its direct, non-iterative methodology. This model is a non-dimensional model and therefore requires... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bioenergy, Biomass, communities, cost sharing, Optimization, quantity discounts, Simulation, supply chain coordination, system dynamics
Biomass is an abundant energy source, particularly in Canada, as an alternative or primary source for electricity generation. However, low economy of scale could cause a loss of efficiency for bioenergy adoption in small remote communities. In this sense, coordination among the players could promote the efficiency and profitability of bioenergy supply chains for these communities. There are different coordination strategies with varying impacts on supply chain players’ profit or cost. Therefore, analyzing and comparing them could provide insights on how to decide about the choice of coordination strategy. In doing so, this study considers the coordination strategies of quantity discounts and cost-sharing. The study adopts a system dynamics approach for simulating these coordination scenarios, obtaining their corresponding optimal supply chain decisions, followed by a comparative analysis. For a case study, the study considers multiple suppliers providing biomass for electricity generat... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy poverty, Optimization, Simulation, solar energy
There is a need to look for alternative sources of renewable energy, especially in zones where people continue to live under energy poverty conditions. Consequently, to enhance the performance of energy systems, algorithms to support planning decisions are required. This article proposes a simulation-optimization framework to solve the stochastic version of the integrated energy dispatch and unit commitment problem for a solar radiation system operating in non-interconnected zones. Our study was motivated by challenges faced by a rural school located in Cundinamarca, Colombia. Particularly, a simulation with optimization-based iterations approach is used, modeling solar radiation as a random variable. The optimization phase uses a heuristic procedure that enables good solutions to be found in short computational times. To test our method, computational experiments were conducted using a set of randomly generated cases. The results suggest that our approach is useful and able to handle... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: direct current, partial discharges, pulse sequence analysis, Simulation
The behaviour of partial discharge as consequences of an alternating current (AC) is already well defined. AC partial discharges have completely different behaviour, background physics and parameters than partial discharges (PD) under direct current (DC) stress. This paper focuses on the most used and promising evaluation method of the PD DC stress—pulse sequence analysis (PSA). The first step is understanding and verifying the mechanisms and principles of this method. It is provided by well-known fundamentals of AC PD and by comparison with the other diagnostic and fault-locating methods such as phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) and pulse diagrams. The paper shows the PSA simulations and PD analyses performed at AC and partly at DC test conditions on typical PD test arrangements such as corona, surface and internal discharges. It is shown that the simulations performed, compared and validated with data obtained from measurements on different PD arrangements are a good match. Thi... [more]

Keywords: experimental, heat, mass, Simulation, sisal fiber
Vegetable fibers have inspired studies in academia and industry, because of their good characteristics appropriated for many technological applications. Sisal fibers (Agave sisalana variety), when extracted from the leaf, are wet and must be dried to reduce moisture content, minimizing deterioration and degradation for long time. The control of the drying process plays an important role to guarantee maximum quality of the fibers related to mechanical strength and color. In this sense, this research aims to evaluate the drying of sisal fibers in an oven with mechanical air circulation. For this purpose, a transient and 3D mathematical model has been developed to predict moisture removal and heating of a fiber porous bed, and drying experiments were carried out at different drying conditions. The advanced model considers bed porosity, fiber and bed moisture, simultaneous heat and mass transfer, and heat transport due to conduction, convection and evaporation. Simulated drying and heating... [more]

Keywords: control, EMS, microgrid, MPC, Simulation
An Energy Management System (EMS) that uses a Model Predictive Control (MPC) to manage the flow of the microgrids is described in this work. The EMS integrates both wind speed and solar radiation predictors by using a time series to perform the primary grid forecasts. At each sampling data measurement, the power of the photovoltaic system and wind turbine are predicted. Then, the MPC algorithm uses those predictions to obtain the optimal power flows of the microgrid elements and the main network. In this work, three time-series predictors are analyzed. As the results will show, the MPC strategy becomes a powerful energy management tool when it is integrated with the Double Exponential Smoothing (DES) predictor. This new scheme of integrating the DES method with an MPC presents a good management response in real-time and overcomes the results provided by the Optimal Power Flow method, which was previously proposed in the literature. For the case studies, the test microgrid located in th... [more]

Keywords: Biomass, boudouard reaction, char combustion, downdraft gasifier, gasification, kinetics, pyrolysis, Simulation, spruce, steam gasification
In this study, biomass−specific gasification data is experimentally collected for numerical simulations of fixed−bed reactors. Since biomass properties vary, it is crucial to have characteristic biomass data. Extensive data is collected to determine an appropriate description of specific biomass behavior, including basic data (e.g., heating value, size, densities, ultimate and total analysis etc.), biomass pyrolysis and heterogeneous gasification reaction data. Heterogeneous reactions were comparatively investigated in the forms of powder, particles, and a fixed−bed. The powder was investigated in depth with CO2, O2, and H2O (gas fraction 5−20 vol.%; temperature CO2, O2 and H2O, respectively, at 730−790 °C, 360−405 °C, 720−780 °C), while particle reactions and fixed−bed reaction were only studied with CO2. A model description for a fixed−bed batch reactor was applied, modified, and compared to experimental fixed−bed batch reactor results. This study concludes that determining the appro... [more]

Keywords: BISON, finite element methods, fuel performance, Simulation, UO2
To further the development of low-enriched uranium fuels, precedence has been placed on delivering the same amount of power while lowering the fuel temperature and radial temperature gradient. To address this, modeling efforts have resulted in a novel design featuring conductive fins of varying thermal conductivities and geometries inserted into the fuel matrix. These conductive inserts were not allowed to exceed 6% of the original fuel volume. This constraint was imposed due to other designs displacing 10% of fuel volume. A parametric study was performed that consisted of 2.56 million BISON simulations involving varying fin characteristics (i.e., fin thermal conductivity, number, and geometry) to determine the optimal geometric configuration for a desired amount of fuel volume displaced. The results from this study show that the thickness and length of each fin affect the fuel temperature and temperature gradient more than varying the number and thermal conductivity of the fins. Physical activity involves movements, which can be considered sources of kinetic energy, that are expected to be important during sports activities. Several transducers can transform this energy into electrical energy. Piezoelectric generators are widely used, and several applications highlight their relevance. However, the generated output power is location dependent, and the analysis of the placement of this kind of generator can be challenging. In order to assess the availability of kinetic energy sources, an acceleration data analysis method is presented. Temporal and harvester model-based studies, using data from 17 inertial measurement units (IMUs) located across the whole human body, were conducted. The results show that piezoelectric cantilever-beam harvesters can be very sensitive to impacts. Extremity segments, such as the feet or hands, can be considered as good energy sources. The most relevant features are proposed as criteria to easily evaluate the harvestable energy sour... [more]

Internal combustion engines face increased market, societal, and governmental pressures to improve performance, requiring researchers to utilize modeling tools capable of a thorough analysis of engine performance. Heat release is a critical aspect of internal combustion engine diagnostic analysis, but is prone to variability in modeling validity, particularly as engine operation is pushed further from conventional combustion regimes. To that end, this effort presents a comprehensive open-source, zero-dimensional equilibrium heat release model. This heat release analysis is based on a combined mass, energy, entropy, and exergy formulation that improves upon well-established efforts constructed around the ratio of specific heats. Furthermore, it incorporates combustion using an established chemical kinetics mechanism to endeavor to predict the global chemical species in the cylinder. Future efforts can augment and improve the chemical kinetics reactions for specific combustion conditions... [more]

Keywords: commercialization, electrochemical analysis, electrochemical hydrogen compressors, hydrogen energy, Simulation
A global energy shift to a carbon-neutral society requires clean energy. Hydrogen can accelerate the process of expanding clean and renewable energy sources. However, conventional hydrogen compression and storage technology still suffers from inefficiencies, high costs, and safety concerns. An electrochemical hydrogen compressor (EHC) is a device similar in structure to a water electrolyzer. Its most significant advantage is that it can accomplish hydrogen separation and compression at the same time. With no mechanical motion and low energy consumption, the EHC is the key to future hydrogen compression and purification technology breakthroughs. In this study, the compression performance, efficiency, and other related parameters of EHC are investigated through experiments and simulation calculations. The experimental results show that under the same experimental conditions, increasing the supply voltage and the pressure in the anode chamber can improve the reaction rate of EHC and balan... [more]

Keywords: coreflooding, enhanced oil recovery (EOR), low salinity waterflooding, Simulation
Low salinity waterflooding (LSW) has shown promising results in terms of increasing oil recovery at laboratory scale. In this work, we study the LSW effect, at laboratory scale, and provide a basis for quantifying the effect at field scale by extracting reliable relative permeability curves. These were achieved by experimental and numerical interpretation of laboratory core studies. Carbonate rock samples were used to conduct secondary and tertiary unsteady-state coreflooding experiments at reservoir conditions. A mathematical model was developed as a research tool to interpret and further validate the physical plausibility of the coreflooding experiments. At core scale and a typical field rate of ~1 ft/day, low salinity water (LS) resulted in not only ~20% higher oil recovery compared to formation water (FW) but also recovered oil sooner. LS water also showed capability of reducing the residual oil saturation when flooded in tertiary mode. The greater oil recovery caused by LSW can be... [more]

The power-extracting air turbine is modeled by an orifice plate of 1−2% of the internal chamber surface area. Measurements of chamber surface elevation, air flow through the orifice, and pressure difference across the orifice are compared with numerical calculations using both weakly-nonlinear potential flow theory and computational fluid dynamics. Both compressible- and incompressible-flow models are considered, and the effects of air compressibility are found to have a significant influence on t... [more]

Modern households usually have independent energy sources such as wind generators, photovoltaic (PV) panels, and similar green energy production equipment. Experts predict that soon, there will be an increasing number of such prosumers who both produce and consume energy. This process alleviates and reduces the load on large national electricity networks and also contributes to overall energy security. In this paper, a simulation model of a household, which employs a wind generator as its independent source of electricity, is developed. It is expected that this approach will be easily replicated for more complex configurations. The other components of the single prosumer microgrid that will be assessed are the non-shiftable electricity consumption equipment, which is used mainly in households and deployed separately for water heater, with a separate battery to meet the needs of these non-shiftable consumers. The 5-min data intervals for the year of simulation have been used. The charac... [more]

Due to increasing numbers of intermittent and distributed generators in power systems, there is an increasing need for demand responses to maintain the balance between electricity generation and use at all times. For example, the electrification of transportation significantly adds to the amount of flexible electricity demand. Several methods have been developed to schedule such flexible energy consumption. However, an objective way of comparing these methods is lacking, especially when decisions are made based on incomplete information which is repeatedly updated. This paper presents a new benchmarking framework designed to bridge this gap. Surveys that classify flexibility planning algorithms were an input to define this benchmarking standard. The benchmarking framework can be used for different objectives and under diverse conditions faced by electricity production stakeholders interested in flexibility scheduling algorithms. High fidelity modelling for nuclear power plant analysis is becoming more common due to advances in modelling software and the availability of high-performance computers. However, to design, develop and regulate new light water nuclear reactors there are, up until now, limited requirements for high fidelity methods due to the already well-established computational methods already being widely accepted. This article explores the additional detail which can be obtained when using high fidelity methods through Monte Carlo/Sub-channel analysis compared to industrial methods of cross-section/nodal analysis using the Advanced Boiling Water Reactor as a case study. This case study was chosen due to the challenges in modelling two phase flow and the high levels of heterogeneity within the fuel assembly design. The article investigates how to implement such an approach, from a bottom-up procedure, by analysing each stage of the modelling process.

This paper describes a new modeling framework for microscopic to reservoir-scale simulations of hydraulic fracturing and production. The approach builds upon a fusion of two existing high-performance simulators for reservoir-scale behavior: the GEOS code for hydromechanical evolution during stimulation and the TOUGH+ code for multi-phase flow during production. The reservoir-scale simulations are informed by experimental and modeling studies at the laboratory scale to incorporate important micro-scale mechanical processes and chemical reactions occurring within the fractures, the shale matrix, and at the fracture-fluid interfaces. These processes include, among others, changes in stimulated fracture permeability as a result of proppant behavior rearrangement or embedment, or mineral scale precipitation within pores and microfractures, at µm to cm scales.
